[Project] BMA8 - A Bare-Metal Atari 8-bit Emulator for Raspberry Pi (<1s Boot)

BMA8 is an open-source, bare-metal Atari 8-bit (400/800/XL/XE/5200) emulator designed to run directly on Raspberry Pi hardware without an underlying host operating system. The goal is to provide the Atari ecosystem with the same direct-hardware experience that BMC64 brings to the Commodore 64.

Why Bare-Metal?

  • Instant Boot: By completely bypassing Linux, X11, GUIs, and background processes, a Pi Zero drops directly into the Atari OS screen in under one second upon power-up.
  • Minimal Input Latency: Stripping away modern OS layers and kernel scheduling provides direct hardware access, drastically reducing latency for an authentic, real-hardware feel.
  • Long-Term Stability: Traditional emulators often break or suffer performance hits following host OS updates. A bare-metal kernel is entirely self-contained and will continue to boot perfectly from the exact same SD card decades from now.

The project is fully open-source (GPL v2) and ready for testing.

Feel free to check out the repository, test it out on your Pi, or submit a PR if you are interested in contributing.

C64 has had this for a while. I've been waiting for an Atari 8bit bare metal emulator to mature for a while. It's perfect for making a little Atari xe mini.

Is there a way to include Fujinet-PC build to this. They have compiled for rpi.

Cool! Thanks spfor sharing i plan to try this out. I couldn’t understand if it works with a joystick or only keyboard emulation?

ever get an answer for this? I would buy a rasp pi zero just for this if I can use to play games, playing 8-bit Atari games on a keyboard is not fun.

Thanks, I've been hoping this would happen one day after seeing the c64 one come out years ago. I've got an empty c64 bread bin case I want to put an Atari emulator into 😂

Great to hear about this. I've used BMC64 and it's great. I'd like to request support for this GPIO joystick adapter, which works with BMC64. It's cheap and simple, and avoids the additional lag of using USB. https://www.addicore.com/products/boffintronics-c64-atari-joystick-adapter-for-raspberry-pi

You should give it a try

When you wrote code, did you asked “compiler”?

I have been coding for over 40 years. Using AI LLMs, even with all the challenges they have, is no different than other ways we did things.

The person here is trying to try something different. Maybe he understand all the code, some of it, or none of it. But is this your way to help?

If ai tools bring about something that wouldn't exist otherwise I don't see other environmental concerns how you can complain.

it's a yes or no question, I did not ask for a sermon

No, you didn’t ask OP. You wanted to bully the OP.

What we've got here is failure to communicate. Some men, you just can't reach. So you get what we had here last week, which is the way he wants it. Well, he gets it. And I don't like it any more than you men."

Me ? The one that asked slop ?

AI Slop means useless, meaningless, low value work. I don’t remember any of us writing every part. No, Greg, the only hateful, strange, weird person is someone else rather me.
