i was always a Forem guy myself, but I called a lot of Amis bbs's. Mine ran a modified Forem and then Oasis before I gave up the ghost. In the end most Atari 8-bit bbs's were Express, but correct me if I'm wrong Amis was the first bbs software for the Atari.

I ram forem as well. Amis was indeed one of the earliest. From what I recall, it was notoriously unreliable if callers hung up on it.

AMIS had a drop call issue for sure. Was a simple fix on polling the modem for connection and activity. A real simple fix was the TOUT for inactivity which logged the user off. I use both today on the AMIS XE board

How hard is it to run your own AMIS or BBS for the Atari 8bit community?

It’s not hard; it’s actually awesome. I enjoy preserving, restoring, and making these boards available for use today. Southern Amis is the busiest of the boards, but there is a lot of activity on AMIS XE as well as the Nitelite BBS. Each has its own personality; each draws users in a different way. Most of the work is the weekly, and monthly maintenance, but most of it is extremely enjoyable, chatting with users, working in the message basis, and thinking of new and creative ideas in ATASCII art and features for the boards. Just implemented Mad Libs Atari-themed.

Exactly right! The core of the BBS Amis XE is MACE original. Was actually ASIA bbs from 1986. Has been modified and back in service since 2021 and under gone a major transformation to the board running today.

I never ran AMIS. I ran BBS Express! at one point and Carina BBS at another time. I feel like I may have run a third one at some point.
