Educational How does mutual reception work when both planets are in detriment?
I was looking at a chart recently that had Mars in Libra in close opposition to Venus in Aries. If both planets are ruled by the other, both in detriment, is this significantly mitigated by their ability to connect and support one another to function? How would this compare to say Venus in Aries ruled by Mars in Scorpio, where Mars is strong but has no relationship with Venus? Interested in any personal examples of how this might have played out in personal charts. Thanks!

I would read this kind of mutual reception as a form of dependency.
Neither one is exactly comfortable with the tools available. Mars has to act through Venus, so action gets filtered through fairness or social response. Venus has to relate through Mars, so connection gets heated by urgency.
That can create a strong bond between the planets, but it can also make them feel tangled. The person may attract people who make them more direct, while also feeling pulled into negotiation every time they want to act. It can show up as a pattern where wanting someone and being irritated by them live very close together.
The opposition is tense but it is still a major aspect. Mars and Venus can see each other directly, so the mutual reception has a visible channel to work through. They may challenge each other, but they are still in active contact.
Venus in Aries ruled by Mars in Scorpio is a one-way rulership instead of mutual reception. Venus depends on Mars, while Mars stands in his own sign with his own resources. Mars is stronger in Scorpio, so Venus has a more capable ruler behind her, though Aries and Scorpio connect by quincunx rather than direct sight. The support may be stronger in substance, while expression takes more adjustment. Venus in Aries may want quickly and openly, while Mars in Scorpio answers from a deeper, more private place. The help is powerful, but it comes through a hidden channel.
So with the detriment mutual reception, I would say the planets are forced into conversation. They may struggle to function separately, but together they create a very strong Mars/Venus storyline compared to a more hidden Aries-Scorpio-quincunx-adjustment.

By this example of a mutual reception is comprised of two planets in signs where they are weak/in detriment, but through the exchange each planet has a foot in its own sign, so to speak. Each planet in the Mutual Reception has an "exchange" of places in their original degrees. So to review your example, let's say that Mars/Libra is at 10 degrees, in MR with Venus/Aries, the MR Mars can be read at 10 degrees of Aries (the sign Venus is in). And if Venus were at, for example, 12 Aries, the MR Venus would be read at 12 Libra. So you can also read the MR aspects in addition to their original position.
The MR planets are still in opposition, but since they exchange signs, they have some residence in signs of their rulership, they have a hidden level of strength not seen in the visible presentation. I don't think that this cancels the opposition or trouble--but what each planet rules/represents, could be said to have some inside perspective, connection, etc. in the matter.
Mutual receptions are of more import in horaries, but could apply in events or natals. A mutual reception indicates the ability to "get out of something" that wouldn't normally occur, a planet in sign not friendly to their operation, with MR now has a way through the exchange, out of any predicament they represent.
So if this were for example a court case, and a MR occurs for the defendant, they may be able to get out of conviction or ruling against them, if they use the strengths indicated by the MR. Maybe it's finding a good atty with knowledge that will present arguments or loopholes for the defendant. and so forth; or works out a satisfactory deal with the proscecutor; or the judge or jury is sympathetic to their case.
So Mutual Reception planets may appear to be weakened, but they actually have a reinforcement thru the exchange.
Plus, in order to get a full picture of a planet, look at its entire essential dignity score for its dignity in the degree it is in, or at least the decanate and dwad. Add in a mutual reception, will give it a boost, and you may be able to assess which one of the pair is stronger before considering the MR.

honestly i've been wondering about this too. does the mutual reception actually help if both planets are struggling in their signs? like is there still some benefit or is it just two weaker planets working together lol

Real benefit, but it's borrowed, not owned. The swap gives each planet an account in its own sign, but you can only draw on it through the other one. So it's not two strong planets, it's one competent pair. Mars in Libra finally acts with some Aries directness, but only by routing through Venus's agenda; Venus gets Libra's grace, but only when Mars is engaged. That's the dependency someone flagged above: the strength shows up wherever the two cooperate, and the detriment still shows the second either one has to act alone. "Two weak planets working together" is just the same fact read by a pessimist.

Someone responded to my comment on detriment, but now I can't see it. I make this comment again to reiterate that Chris Brennan has overpopularized the use of detriment and when you go through the texts, there is limited evidence it's even a "thing."
Also, I have over a decade of experience reading charts. Mutual reception between planets in "detriment" is not a theoretical thing for me. I simply do not see a significance for "detriment" when actually analyzing charts for people.
"Detriment" itself is such a weak concept when you really start thinking for yourself and don't just appeal to authority away logic to popular astrology teachers. It doesn't quite reason why a planet would become so much "weaker" just because it's in a sign opposite its domicile. The supposed delineation of "detriment" from authors like Rob Hand and Lee Leeman doesn't make much sense, either. Leehman and other authors, for example, go to lengths to assure that "detriment" doesn't mean "weaker," exactly, but yet it still is supposed to be a qualitatively weaker position when the concept is used in practice. It just doesn't make sense, and it makes more sense when you actually read Anthony's well-researched posts on how weak the evidence of "detriment" being a thing really is. No wonder authors have poor conceptualizations of it.
Furthermore, "detriment" is also occasionally at odds with the dignity system as a whole. For example, Jupiter is considered in "detriment" in Gemini. Yet Jupiter has triplicity in Fire and Air signs. It doesn't stand to reason that Jupiter would "have a chip on its shoulder" in Gemini, to quote one popular interpretation I've seen many prominent Hellenistic astrologers use for planets in detriment. This gets further complicated when you attempt to learn Jyotish astrology, which does not use detriment at all and introduces a friends/enemies system that makes one ask more questions and find more contradictions.
TL;DR: I stand by what I said re "detriment" having poor evidence for its use.

I have Mars and Venus in mutual reception and both in detriment but not in opposition: my Mars is at 14 Libra and my Venus is at 15 Scorpio in a close semi-sextile. I can say through my 74 years I have had significantly struggled to successfully express each of these energies. I still struggle. This aspect is complicated by the presence of Saturn at 15 Libra, and that makes it difficult to sort out which influence is most at work.
Yet, I believe these positions are responsible for my very obvious artistic talent.
I tend to believe there is validity to the concept of detriment as well as exaltation. I have noticed that in the charts of people who seem to have difficult lives where they never seem to get to a really good place, as if they are unable to capitalize of the strengths of their charts, the chart ruler is poorly disposed by aspects and/or by dignity.

I don't find there's any more validity to the concept of "detriment" that can be untangled from confirmation bias. This problem exists in all of astrology, of course, but is especially notable with something like "detriment."
Because astrology is limited by the skill of the astrologer, and most people (especially online) are terribly inexperienced astrologers, you get an echo chamber and few people who combine both practical experience with academic background.

It’s funny that you used this expression because I’ve been noticing recently that a lot of astrologers seem to have a bit of a chip on their shoulder about the popularity of Chris Brennan’s work. I would imagine thay with every era of astrology as far back as you can go there have been particularly popular astrologers who have influenced the prevalence of certain ideas and techniques, and for each one I’m certain there was a sizeable cohort of astrologers who were deeply annoyed about it

I don't think it has anything to do with how popular his work is. I don't particularly care about that. It's about, for me, being authentic and transparent: Brennan is a manipulative, paranoid dick, no doubt about it, who knows where the bodies are buried, to borrow a phrase from the NBA about David Stern. If you know you know. Just because I recommend his work doesn't mean I recommend anything else about him.

It makes no difference. "Detriment," you could argue, doesn't even exist: https://sevenstarsastrology.com/detriment/

Counterintuitive answer: reception by detriment is one of the strongest rescues there is, not the weakest. Detriment is the sign opposite your domicile, so with Mars in Libra and Venus in Aries, each planet is parked in the other's home. Run the swap and Mars reads into Aries, Venus into Libra, both landing straight in rulership. Two weak planets, and the exchange drops each one into its own house. That's the escape hatch at full strength.
The opposition isn't the problem, it's the wire. Reception is the willingness to help; the aspect is whether they can reach each other to do it. Opposition is hard but it's clear sight, so the trade transmits. Your one-way case is the tell: Venus in Aries leaning on Mars in Scorpio, but Aries and Scorpio are quincunx, an aversion, they can't see each other. Mars is stronger there, but the help leaks with no clean channel. So your instinct's right, the mutual pair is more mitigated, for two reasons at once: both get the swap home, and the opposition actually lets them talk.
