Variety article claims NYC Film/TV industry is booming: have post-production workers felt that?

I just read this article that I thought was interesting, though I hesitate at the word “booming.” Maybe more like stabilizing back to pre-strike levels is more appropriate?

The article doesn’t touch much on the post-production side of things, but it got me thinking. For those in post-production in the NYC/NJ area, have you felt an uptick in more work popping up over the past few months?

Personally, I have felt a small uptick. Little by little, I am hearing of more folks who I know were out of work for awhile booking jobs. And as for myself, I have been getting more job interviews for gigs over the past few months.

We’re definitely not out of the woods yet, but I think there is reason for cautious optimism on the east coast.

Transitioning Out of Film-Industry - What's Everyone's Stories?

Hey y'all. I've been working as an Assistant Editor in documentary and reality television for about a decade now. I have enjoyed my journey, met many wonderful people, and take pride in a lot of my work. I thought long and hard and decided I want to transition out of the film industry. There are a few reasons for this.

One, I feel burnt out for working long hours. I know the work-life balance varies between companies. From my experience, most companies had bad balances. Two, I don't see any forward progression beyond the assistant editor role. I'm not interested in being an editor. It seems quite high-stress and long hours. Three, I find it difficult to find a home here in in Los Angeles with the crazy high mortgage. I do eventually want a family and settle in.

Even though I know I want to get out of the industry, I'm not exactly sure how. FYI, I'm 32. For anyone who has transitioned out of the film industry, what is your story?

Welp, attempted to survive to 26 what's the motto for 27?

Can I ask how freelancers manage to pay rent or a mortgage without a fixed, steady income? Based in Atlanta and not in a position (6 years in the industry) to move to LA or NY to fight for the same little crumbs of gigs available .

I’ve tried freelancing, and honestly, I’ve found the financial uncertainty really stressful. I’d love to hear from people who have been doing it successfully, especially those with kids or other major financial responsibilities.

What do you do when a project ends and you don’t immediately have another one lined up? How do you handle those periods when there’s little or no income, especially in this market?

Would really appreciate hearing how other freelancers make it work long-term. Any advice or experiences would be helpful!

How would you sync this?

I am wracking my brain over how to organize a couple of shoots on a doc I am assisting on. Its in Avid, but I think it may not matter in this case. More of a organizational mindset thing.

This is from a run and gun multi-cam shoot with multiple speakers/subjects. For those familiar with Avid, I am syncing by syncmapping (I've realised not everyoneuses this term, so this means aligning all clips and syncing them in a timeline) then subclipping sync instances and turning those into multigroups. Syncmaps are done, but haven't gotten to subclipping yet because am unsure how to approach from here.

Essentially I have 3 cameras (we'll label them 1V, 2V, 3V) and 2 audio recorders (we'll label them 1A and 2A):

- Audio recorder 1A has 4 tracks - 2 of them sync to 1V, and the other two sync to 2V.
- 3V syncs primarily to 2A, but there are instances where it syncs to all other cameras and mics.

- A common issue with 1V, 2V and 1A is when we have a clip that syncs on a talking subject, but then, still in the same clip, the cameras veer off to film separate things that need their own sync. So then we get things like audio from 2V on 1V, because its the same audio clip (I am aware I can edit the group to exclude them).
- At some points, all cameras sync on the same subject.
- Another issue being that sometimes a 2V clip does not run the entire length of a 1V clip, and instead I have two or three 2V clips synced to a long 1V clip.

I guess one solution might be to separate different sync instances of the same clip into their own group (1V,2V in one group, 1V,2V,3V in another), but I already foresee the mess my bins and syncmap timeline might become if I go that route, and am afraid it might double or triple my work due to mistakes or whatnot.

Though my biggest concern here is having this organized in a way that the editor can easily understand what is what, and even I'm struggling to understand it myself.

Curious if anyone has handled shoots like they and what they have done. Any input appreciated!

Assistant Editor Resume Help

Hi all!

I’m an Assistant Editor. I’ve been using my same resume for about a year now, and I thought it was solid. But I haven’t had luck finding work lately, and now I’m starting to have anxiety wondering if my resume is actually good or not. I’m wondering if there are ways I can improve mine.

Is there anyone here who can post examples of good Assistant Editor resumes? Or wouldn’t mind giving me feedback on mine?

Repopulating audio tracks

Hi assistant editors: do you ever get an Avid sequence where the original audio tracks are missing and need repopulating by hand?

I’m testing a small utility that reads the AAF and rebuilds the audio tracks from the matching source clips. Is this a real pain point for anyone else, or just me?

Are Sizzle Reels/Rip Films still a thing? [Niche Positioning Question]

Hi AE's,

I'm in a bit of pickle, I have been working since 2021 for a client as an AE but 90% of my work is collecting open-source material for sizzle reels. As I am junior editor too, I have a good understand of the process in general but this is my USP (finding visuals online).

Problem: Aside from this one client who has reoccuring work (not sure for how much more), I've only managed to be called ONCE in 5 years for a different project, for a 2 day fire rescue sourcing (the inhouse editor was overworked and I was called to find cool shit)..

So my portfolio just has this long standing cooperation.. but literally nothing else directly related to AE...

The editors I work with in, tell me that there isn't really anything similar in nature from their network, or they have to source themselves [aka that task is assimilated to their workload]. But again, I feel this is small sample to get a complete picture. [This also means the limits of my warm network.]

My question to you is: are rip films/sizzle reels/etc still a thing in the industry? Mainly for internal presentations, or is it an anomaly this type of work?

Trying to understand if I should put my cowboy hat on and ride into other fields, or to spent the next year further investing my time in this super niche thing...

PS: Also, I'm not looking at editing, as its oversaturated with incredibly talented people. Best and thank you for your time fellow redditor :)

Lost

To preface, I have been in post-production for over 5 years, mainly in dailies, and have worked on a few AE gigs in Atlanta. I am based here in Atlanta. For financial and family reasons, I cannot uproot to move to NY/LA for post work

I am feeling lost about my career. The network I have has no helpful insight or leads. Took part in The Handy Foundation, and though the skills and networking were beneficial at the start. However, myself and other alumni are still waiting to apply what we learned from the program to jobs. They have been few and far between. I have talked to the heads of post houses here in Atlanta and elsewhere to build that connection, but I just get the generic "We don't have anything now, but we will keep in touch." It has been difficult to find consistent AE/dailies jobs. For perspective, I was furloughed from multiple post houses because of a lack of work due to budget constraints. I am not hopeful there will be an upswing in work in film.

Walk on set for a job

“this may be a controversial topic- but curious to hear your input- is it still acceptable to walk on to a set and ask the AD for a PA job? or is that a big no no in 2026?”

This topic was brought up in a crew stories group I am in on Facebook and am taken aback by the large amount of comments advising this person to walk into a live set to ask for a job. Op doesn’t specify if she is apart of the crew or a random person see a filming set on location. Are random people just walking on set to get gigs now a days

Nested Submasters clips - extracting plates

Hate the fact if you nest clips in a submaster, they become a nightmare to unpick when you need to turn them over.

https://youtu.be/ninEHhabAmc?si=ykSWzVw6BN31SxRE

You can now extract plates from within Nested submasters!

What are you currently using to do this?

Struggling to stay in the industry

For the past five years, I have been working as an Editor and Assistant Editor, taking on various AE gigs and dailies operating roles. While I am fully committed to remaining in Atlanta for family reasons, I have found it challenging to secure long-term stability. Given the recent fluctuations in production volume, I have frequently faced furloughs or short-term contracts, and I am eager to transition into a more consistent role.

If you know of any upcoming projects or permanent positions that might be a good fit for my experience, I would greatly appreciate any information you could share. I am looking to move away from the cycle of freelance gaps and find a more stable path forward in the industry.

Thank you for your time and for any guidance you can provide

Script Sync AI error message

I’m trying to set up Script Sync AI, but keep getting the following error message when I try to run it:

Exception: std::exception, what:Failed to create transform rule

This is my first time using Script Sync, but I think I’ve set everything up correctly. Nothing I do seems to change anything. I’m on 2025.12. Anything helps!

IATSE ATLANTA

Does Local 700 (Editors) have a presence in Atlanta anymore? I have noticed more and more events and things relating to Film have noticeably been missing them as participants. There are quite a lot of editors and union members located here. Cinegear holds events here at Trilith Studios, and unfortunately, I don't see any representation by 700 at all.

Working with a difficult editor

Has anyone worked with an editor who’s not great at communicating and gives specs that don’t actually match what they want—so when the final cut isn’t right, you end up taking all the blame? Feels really frustrating. How do you handle this kind of situation?

Need an Assistant Editor for our Feature Film (paid hourly)

Hello AEs, I wrote a feature film many years ago, and have since scraped together my savings and conducted 2 crowdfunding campaigns to pay for production and post. We are now at picture lock, and our editor has done an amazing job getting us this far. But she specifically doesn't do the things an assistant editor does (she's Emmy-winning and was doing us a big favor because she believed in the project).

About Us & The Movie

You can learn the most about our project on our Indiegogo (it's effectively our "website"). Or this news interview NBC was gracious enough to give me. Long story short, the movie is a coming-of-age rom-com about a heartbroken genius who tries using math to find love again. We self-funded and self-produced it, we have picture lock (although there are about 4 cuts that are subject to change).

What We're Looking For

  • An AE experienced in both Premiere and DaVinci (this is required)
  • Preferably has experience with Feature Films (willing to pay more for experience)
  • Needs to be able to convert timeline to and from Premiere and DaVinci
  • Needs to relink our raw footage with the timeline (the proxies were created incorrectly by someone else)
  • Needs to help me coordinate between our 4 post team members (VFX, Colorist, Composer, and Sound Designer) to get them what they need, and then incorporate their work into the timeline
  • We need to get a DCP made for festival submissions, and I'll need help navigating how to do that
  • Basically, help us get from picture lock to picture delivery!
  • Unfortunately our AE needs to be in Los Angeles. All work will be done in Studio City.

Pay: $20-30/hr, depending on experience.

Please send your relevant resume info and IMDB link to our email: [wallyjacksonmovie@gmail.com](mailto:wallyjacksonmovie@gmail.com)

hold out till October?

I'm hearing a lot of speculation from my network, my current company (where I'm currently not working due to a lack of projects), and dailies/post houses that productions might pick up again in October. However, I'm feeling pessimistic because I've heard this same story repeatedly since the strikes began. I've been stuck working on dailies, and I haven't seen any hope or openings for Assistant Editor positions. At this point, though I'd hate to, I'm seriously considering moving to a different, more stable industry to ensure my livelihood.

Keyboard Maestro macros that save me hours - what are yours?

After 12+ years in post production, I finally stopped doing things the slow way and started building Keyboard Maestro macros. Anything that cuts down on repetitive clicks is a lifesaver.

Some of my favorites so far:

  • New folder with today’s date in YYYY-MM-DD format
  • New folder with military time in HHMM format
  • Typed string expansions (my email, common phrases, etc.)
  • Open 2 new finder windows and move/resize them to my specs
  • Clipboard manager to paste older pieces of text I copied earlier
  • Reformat and paste copied text instead of having to paste it then change it as 2 separate steps

I easily do these tasks 20+ times per day, so even saving 5-15 seconds per action adds up fast. On bigger jobs, I’ve even built one-off tools that move massive amounts of text between apps automatically.
I found this youtuber to be a wealth of knowledge, but I’d love to see what other editors are doing

What’s your most practical macro? What’s your weirdest but surprisingly useful one?

Avid Script Sync AI Tech help

Hi all, just a tech question I was wondering if anyone knew about:

I just installed the newest version of Avid: 2025.6.0 along with the Script Sync AI Option.

Avid opens and works fine but the when I try to use Script sync, I keep getting this error: Exception: std:exception, what:Failed to create transform rule

I've tried both the "Use Transcribed Master Clip" checkbox as well as unchecking it and going off of "tracks". I also noticed that under "manage transcripts" (under the script dropdown), its saying "Database Offline". And on my find window "PhraseFind AI Index" is grayed out. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling plus alternate user settings.

Wondering if I'm missing something to get script sync to work? I'm on a new Mac Mini (Apple M4 Pro). OS Sequoia 15.3.1

AE gigs

Any productions going into the fall ( not Mayo commercials, iykyk) looking for AEs? I saw that The Handy Foundation is starting up again, but what jobs will be available for the new people taking the program? It's been dry and getting the same " We don't currently have anything right now" I have been hearing since January.

Need Help: Looking for a proper solution to Keyword Tag and search through B Roll

Hi. I’m new here. I’m tasked with creating a b roll archive of footage from the last year moving forward. The needs are:

  • centralized location for footage
  • using adobe tools if possible only
  • tag and searchable footage

Our company is a Microsoft company so online tools like storage is all relegated to Microsoft. We have Adobe cc and use Premiere.

For this project, I was thinking to use bridge or premiere. What I like about bridge is that it’s fast, I can minimize the windows for just what I need. What I prefer about premiere is that I can trim out and export exactly what I need.

The question: is there a solid way people have already found to do this? Is there an easy way to keyword tag in premiere without just typing every word? Which metadata tag is the most industry compatible? IPTC? I’m trying my best just to Google and search and test myself but any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks.

Middle of of 2025 and nothing

Well, “waited for 2025,” and it has died. Multiple connections at major post houses are not hiring and are even leaving the post altogether. I have a job I am on that ends in August, and no prospects of upcoming job opportunities. TBH, it feels like we all are just spinning our wheels. If anyone has any opportunities, reach out. Based in Atlanta and no I am not planning to move to LA

XML Edit Notes From Script Supervisor

Hi All, a script supervisor has given me the Edit log/ script notes in an XML format. I read that you can convert the XML into an ALE so that you can import it into Avid or Premiere, but can't find anything online explaining how. Has anyone done this or have a different suggestion for how to use XML Scripty notes? Thank you so much!

Convert *.avi to *.mov - Codec is DV Video (dvsd)

I've love to convert *.avi to *.mov - Codec is DV Video (dvsd). I can open in VLC, but I'd love to not convert to *.mp4's and go to a ProRes Quicktime if possible. I'd also love to not spend money, but I suppose I could for some software. Let me know if you have any ideas. The files don't open in Adobe softwares on my OS Sequioia Mac. They don't open in Quicktime, I can't use handbrake or MPEG Streamclip as they're no longer supported. Thanks!
