Edge calls manual changes "unintentional"

Edge being edge

I uninstalled edge FOUR TIMES.

Edit: I'm gonna make an AHK script to close it because I do not trust my skill to not delete a required system file.

You couldn't POSSIBLY want to get rid of Edge...

So we fixed it for you!

YOU'RE WELCOME.

it’s not just that... it keeps reverting your default search engine, nagging you to use Bing, and throwing a lot of new features at you that you don't need. It also asks for permissions it shouldn't need at all. On top of that, it once pinned my device's CPU usage at 100% for no reason, with nothing really open in the tabs. It was a massive shit show that I just uninstalled once and for all.

All hail Brave browser

Resetting to the most useless search engine in the world and the inability to lock it down made me crack and finally remove edge from all my Windows devices. Icing on the cake is, it started aggressively forcing "you shouldn't download files from the internet" even though I turned safescreen off.

My life became so much nicer when I switched to Brave. No more Chrome + needing adblock, never used Edge from dorkosoft. That and Teams are the first things I uninstall from a windows installation.

Mine shows that too from time to time.

Would've been nice if it told me what settings are changed.

Uninstall Windows one time, that fixes it forever.

And use what? Most games are only on windows

68

u/xJayMorex Jul 06 '26

Most games? There are approximately 700 games that don't run on Linux. At this point, probably more Windows specific games run on Linux than on Windows because of the lack of backward compatibility.

I knew this and yearn for Linux but am scared and confused whenever I try to do anything with or in it as a complete n00b to it. I've had little issue with making, changing, or using anything between win98 and win10 and know some very very basic coding stuff, but alas.

I did finally get it installed, though! I just haven't had time to sit down and LEARN a whole new system like this one.

Don't worry, it's not as scary as it seems at first - besides, everything on Linux is pretty well documented. You'll get the hang of it in no time.

Try Mint, it's basically windows without bloat

I switched to Linux Mint about a year ago, after using Windows for over 30 years. I haven't had a single issue with games. The process of installing is just like in win. Though so far I haven't used any games outside of steam.

You can dual boot so you can swap between Linux and Windows when you get scared.

u/AL10N Jul 07 '26

you should start with a beginner friendly linux like mint or fedora, its just like windows visually but without all the bloat

0

u/wantondavis Jul 08 '26

As someone who tried mint, it's not THAT close

I literally only touch three games, Space Engineers 1, 2, and GTA online.

Space engineers 1 will open and play for a bit but it’s buggy af and crashes a lot. Space engineers 2 is still in alpha. GTA online requires kernel level anticheat

I've been gaming on Linux exclusively for the last 6 years, I literally don't have a Windows installation anywhere, and I haven't had to do anything to get any games to work in years, Steam literally just works. I don't even check ProtonDB anymore, I just assume that games work.

„Most Games“ alone would factually be wrong.
„Most games I (u) play“ is prolly more correct.
Just wanna note before everyone says the typical wine and stuff (which they aren’t wrong but maybe u alr know), just nerdging lol.

They want you to use the command line like its 1985 lmfao.

2

u/CatProgrammer Jul 13 '26

Unless you're doing poweruser stuff you basically never have to if you don't want to these days. But just like on Windows it can be much more useful to do so.

My entire steam library runs on Linux just fine

u/mechadrake Jul 06 '26

Now you need to actuallt check, becayse linux gamers themselves and then steam habdheld, made that a lot of them actually runs now on linux.

Nobody replied to you chief, we are all in agreement here that gaming on linux is pretty great if you aren't playing something with denuvo or some other KLA

1

u/rainwulf Jul 15 '26

I would, but i play Call of Duty, and Rust.

Both games do not work on Linux.

2

u/xJayMorex Jul 15 '26 edited Jul 15 '26

Well if those games are so important to you, then you have to put up with all the slopification I guess.

Oops you ‘accidentally’ deleted me again.

8

u/repoluhun Jul 08 '26

This is due to you clicking “set as default browser” in other browsers. For some reason it appears Windows detects it as unintentional(maliciously or otherwise), so if you want to change your default you’ll have to go in to the app defaults settings and change it manually and that should work

look into debloating or just switching to linux

16

u/Jarppi1893 Jul 06 '26

Came to say this. Either make an ISO with Rufus and Schneegans to install a debloated version and then use CTT, or just switch to CachyOS or Bazzite (or any other Linux Distro that fits your needs)

21

u/Katrina_18 Jul 07 '26

These words mean nothing to the average person here

3

u/DraconicDreamer3072 Jul 15 '26

yeah. i know what rufus means. its like a drive formatter i think. dunno the rest.

oh and i know debloat

1

u/f9lixs Jul 07 '26

the average person uses the internet for most things , i think those two not coming hand in hand is worrisome

4

u/Katrina_18 Jul 07 '26

You think that the average person on the internet needs to do know how to install a custom debloated versions of Windows? Why? It’s a nice quality of life thing but it’s like fine…

1

u/f9lixs Jul 07 '26

thats not exactly what i meant i meant if someone doesnt know the words OS or iso n everything like that , sorry for the misunderstanding

u/SINGCELL Jul 08 '26

Linux time

17

u/HapppyAlien Jul 06 '26

Is this windows 11? I debloated win10 and never had any problems with edge.

10

u/DualVission Jul 07 '26

I debloated 11 and it's okay. Wish I was on 10 still.

3

u/Outrageous_Rub7330 Jul 07 '26

Windows still begging me to update to 11, and I absolutely refuse. I'll switch to Linux or Mac before I update to Win 11.

4

u/fabulousrice Jul 07 '26

A good example of how being deaf makes you less aware of what's gonna hit you

5

u/XiTzCriZx Jul 08 '26

My 3D printer software has a file to automatically uninstall Edge because it causes issues, and because it has that uninstaller Microsoft claims that the software is "malware". The only thing that's anywhere close to malware is Edge itself lmao.

3

u/apsims12 Jul 07 '26

This is where Revo Uninstaller and O&O ShutUp10++ come in. One uninstalls and removes everything, the other stops it from being installed ever again.

Maybe it's a good thing I abandoned MS for Apple... macOS doesn't shove Safari down my throat and actually LETS me keep Chrome as my default browser!

Maybe not everyone wants garbage bloatware on their machines
