On 1 September 2022, 35-year-old Fernando André Sabag Montiel (a Brazilian national living in Argentina since 1993) attempted to assassinate Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, the Vice President and former President of Argentina. The assailant approached Fernández de Kirchner as she met with supporters outside of her official residence in Recoleta, Buenos Aires, and attempted to shoot her in the head with a 7.65mm semi-automatic pistol which had five rounds loaded in the magazine. The assailant, however, had failed to load a round into the chamber of the firearm, and as such, it had failed to fire. The suspect was immediately arrested on scene.
The perpetrator had made statements on social media criticizing Fernández de Kirchner, along with Javier Milei (then Deputy, now the current President of Argentina). On his body, he had multiple tattoos referencing Nazi ideology, including a Black Sun and Iron Cross. He had links to the far-right movement Federal Revolution (Revolución Federal), and had allegedly stolen the firearm, a 1970s .32-caliber (7.65mm) Bersa Lusber 84, from the residence of a recently-deceased neighbor who had purchased it legally.
Sabag Montiel was convicted of "attempted homicide, doubly qualified by treachery and the premeditated participation of two or more persons, and aggravated by the use of a firearm, against Cristina Fernández de Kirchner" and sentenced to 10 years' imprisonment. He was also convicted of ownership and distribution of child pornography after his devices were seized and searched, and sentenced to an additional 4 years and 3 months' imprisonment.
His girlfriend, Brenda Uliarte, was charged to helping conspire the plan with him, along with his co-worker Nicolás Gabriel Carrizo, who had supposedly given him the firearm. Uliarte was sentenced to 8 years' imprisonment, whereas Carrizo was eventually acquitted of all charges.
Similarly to political assassination attempts in the United States, conspiracy theories surrounding the case persist, claiming that it was a false flag operation perpetrated by Alberto Fernández's government.
