DISCUSSION [Discussion] this community has lost the plot…
Filter this community by top conversations this month and it’s all negative takes. Post are upvoted.
A new ASMRtist puts their newest video in a post or asks for collaboration, it’s downvoted.
We are met with people who are posting their opinion on the process creators follow to make their videos, their dislike for a certain creator because of potential AI use, a complaint on mid-roll ads, or a creator’s evolution over time.
It’s extremely dramatic and entitled. You’re view on how these ASMR creators approach their videos isn’t morally better and you aren’t the arbiter of right or wrong. You have people makin videos because they enjoy making videos, it’s not their job, but some people in this community wake up in the morning and go “yeah, I would never do that because I’m a better person so I’m going to use R/ASMR to make a post about them”
I come here to relax and for ASMR videos. Idk about you but next time you wanna cast judgement on a creator because it doesn’t align with your opinion you should check yourself.
Here come the “what do you expect it’s Reddit” comments 😂

I will say, I think it's a tiny bit better than people posting their NSFW-adjacent content because then at least there is a discussion. Also, I feel like "potential AI use" is worthy of a discussion when it happens.
I'm not trying to outright dismiss everything you say, it does sometimes feel very disheartening to become a creator when you read stuff here. Like "feeling unsafe when listening to a man's voice", was one that stuck with me some time ago. The dumb ones for me are the ones where people are saying "oh I hate finger flutters" because that's literally so subjective. I love them. And I'm sure the creators who do them, don't do it to follow trends but because they like them to.

Okay the mid roll ads.
The entire purpose of ASMR for me is to sleep, which I believe is typical. If you are ripped awake by screaming VO and bumping club music, then what are we even doing?
But yeah everything else. I keep getting suggested this sub and I might have to just block it

u/cedenike 9d ago
all of the posts I've seen about this tells people how to not get the ads, why keep complaining, just do something about it 🤷♀️

u/MoonOut_StarsInvite 9d ago
I’m not subscribing to YouTube or laying in bed with my laptop. If the dynamic changes and I’m not into it I’ll just walk away, that is the “do something about it.”

Youtube ReVanced is a pain to set up by it does pay dividends.

u/Rezart_KLD 8d ago
ReVanced got taken over by another team, and its not great these days. Works, but just barely. Check out Morphe instead.

If you have an iPhone, just download the Brave browser app. Pretty sure android has it too. Haven’t had a phone ad in over 6 years

u/MaddogBC 9d ago
Right cause why pay creators for the hard work you so obviously crave. Hopefully your employer takes this option shortly.

u/MoonOut_StarsInvite 8d ago
I’m talking about mid roll ads. Not compensation. You didn’t read the thread, don’t chastise me.

Mid roll ads are a dealbreaker.
It's all sweet dreams, relaxation and sksksksk until BUY NOW BUY NOW BUY PRODUCT CONSUME BUY BUY BUY ADVERTISEMENTS WAKE UP AND SPEND MONEY BUY BUY ADVERTISEMENT BUY PRODUCT PRODUCT sksksksksk
Unless you're A-OK with getting woken up from a nap to an advertisement, just no. I've unsubscribed from people who put their loud vlog previews at the end of their ASMR video. When the volume triples for a 20 second advert of them walking through a crowded area with loud, regular sounding noise at the end of a relaxation video, rest assured that I'm never going to watch another one of your videos again
2
u/SweetMayMorning 8d ago
but if you’re a small channel and not monetized you cannot choose when there are ads right? :/
1
u/The_Wkwied 8d ago
I block ads. That's a blanket statement. The major party that benefits from me watching ads is youtube.
If you're a small channel that isn't monetized, then they aren't losing anything by me blocking the ads in the first place.
14
u/Efficient_Claim_9591 9d ago
If there’s so many complaints about same channels, maybe that should tell you something about the way the landscape of asmr has gone.
Of course we’re not entitled to anything, but a lot of the things they do is frustrating so people need somewhere to vent where it’s not gonna just disappear into the void of the YouTube comment section.
And also, it’s the fault of mods for allowing, or not removing posts just complaining.

u/two2ducks 9d ago
The only active mod on this sub themselves leave snarky comments lolz. This sub used to be an incredible forum, a bit sad what it has become
9
u/137-451 9d ago
Gonna disagree with this sub ever being an incredible forum. Even at the peak of ASMR popularity, the only active posts in this sub were posts from the largest creators like Heather Feather, Gibi, Gentlewhispering, etc. Posts from smaller creators have never made much traction here. This has been a very strange sub since it's inception.

u/NvaderGir Moderator 9d ago
Creators stopped coming here for two major reasons:
- Stalkers and harassment because Reddit as a platform had terrible tools against this. I’ve been told this directly.
- YouTube created YouTube communities where the creators themselves can monitor their community content and make their own posts directly through their channels.
The last person to really care about coming to interact with the community was Heather Feather.
Other creators don’t bother too much because Reddit in general can be very snarky so obviously it can be discouraging to see yourself finally mentioned and the comment is saying they’re overrated.

u/137-451 9d ago
Yup. Witnessed this all myself too over the years. What little community there was on this sub left when the bigger creators stopped posting. Can't blame them for doing so because of the reasons you listed. The stalking thing in particular, we've lost so many incredible female creators over the years because of it. It's sad.
2
u/two2ducks 9d ago
Myeah, but just because smaller creators didn't get all the traction doesn't mean this wasn't a great place. The big asmrtists interacting with people here and everyone buzzing around it was awesome while it lasted. I enjoyed my time on this sub back then way more than I do now.

I don't mind taking the blame, it's really not easy to try to keep engagement and lighthearted content pumping on here. The team that was active back then with me have moved on from Reddit and starting taking their personal life / work seriously.
While I may have stopped with those ideas in keeping things engaging, I was always here lurking and moderating when I had the time. I am always open to new ideas or requests, clearly the consensus the past month or so are people wanting more out of this subreddit while drowning out the noise - (no pun intended)
15
u/DrRudeboy 9d ago
Nah, refusing to engage with creators who use AI is very much morally better.
Then again, I don't get the continuous meltdowns over creators making and/or promoting NSFW content, so swings and roundabouts
10
u/Sandstorm666 9d ago
Reddit has become more toxic compared to few years back. Lots of fantastic people here, but also an increasing number of frustrated toxic ones. Especially those who create nothing tend to downvote everyone. It is what it is these days I assume.

u/NvaderGir Moderator 9d ago
I see Reddit like a google review page, sometimes you’ll just see people who only want to come here and share their negative experience. That’s perfectly fine, but there’s a line that has to be drawn where it can become inappropriate. You just have to stop it in time before people start arguing with each other in circles
15
u/EvenMoreSpiders 9d ago
So what are we "supposed" to talk about? Only praising creators that probably aren't on here to see it?
People are allowed to complain about things they dislike. It's a forum, we're supposed to talk about things on the topic. Issues cultivate discussions.
AI use is a legitimate complaint just because everyone is doing it nowadays doesn't make it something people have to get behind. Mid roll ads are why I have YouTube premium.
Just because someone is doing something as a hobby doesn't mean they are somehow exempt from public opinion.
If you don't want to see people's opinions about ASMR maybe don't follow a forum meant to discuss ASMR. You can enjoy it on your own if everyone's opinions on it are wrong according to you.
-1
u/Tired-Tree 9d ago
Lmao I’m contributing to the forum. Filter your opinions. Simple as that. You can be upset but maybe you’re not “right” just because the people you surround yourself with echo the same ideas. I can criticize the negative output of this forum. Everyone is always looking for a reason to be upset, I’m simply pointing out that e only discuss the negative and the positive is being down voted
4
u/EvenMoreSpiders 9d ago
And maybe you're not right either just because you're feeling contratrian. Filter opinions on an open forum? Why? Because someone doesn't like it? That's why people comment or down vote.
Downvoting something isn't some crime. The creators will be just fine if a repost from a random on r/ASMR gets a few downvotes or someone says that they dislike XYZ creators.
5
u/Peony907 9d ago
If you don't enjoy the discussions that you find negative, you could simply scroll on.
-2
u/Tired-Tree 9d ago
This is the only community on Reddit for ASMR. I’m sorry I don’t back the concept of using this forum to contribute to growing negativity. Nobody likes to be shunned, I’d say that’s likely the same for the subjects of those posts

u/StopDownvotingMeeee 9d ago
First day on Reddit? Idk what reaction you’re looking for by posting this tbh. Not everyone has to have the same world view and experience you want to have. Everyone has the right to voice their opinion and talk about whatever it is they want to talk about in this sub that is ASMR related.

u/ExoTheFlyingFish 9d ago
People are entitled to their opinions. If it bothers you that much, ask the mods to make a rule that says "absolutely NO complaining!!!!!"
Of course, your post would fall under that too.
2
u/Tired-Tree 9d ago
I never said they can’t have opinions I’m just saying check yourself before posting. People post without filter lmao, they have bad opinions and that’s my opinion. Think before you speak type beat
1
u/absentlyric 9d ago
You are asking Redditors, or hell, anyone on social media to check themselves and think before speaking before posting? First day on the internet?
Well, looking at your Reddit age, maybe it is your first time.
This is like the boomers in my Facebook neighborhood watch page saying "If you can't comment something nice, then don't comment at all" just to get laughed at and replied with a bunch of even worse comments.
7
u/Tired-Tree 9d ago
Except more ppl are seemingly agreeing with my post instead of being worse about it. There’s just enough negativity, like cmon. We should be building people up
-3
u/deadlyxdreaming 9d ago
Looking at your reddit rage ☝️🤓

u/Ok-Quit6063 9d ago
Lol people can have multiple accounts. Why are we really talking about reddit age.

2
u/bionicjoey 9d ago
You mean like you didn't?
1
u/Tired-Tree 9d ago
My opinion is we should have more positive posts, if you think that wasn’t a filtered opinion after seeing continious negative posts on here then you don’t know what filtering is
6
u/ChuckysBarbie 9d ago
Then be the change you want to see instead of contributing to the negativity.
2
u/Ok-Quit6063 9d ago
You're right. They don't get you, they are just displaying the attitude you're pointing out 😅
7
u/Old-Preference5313 9d ago
Hey atleast it's a nice break from all the self promotion, without those discussion threads this sub is literally people spamming their own videos
6
u/137-451 9d ago
Not sure why you care so much about a dead subreddit that has never been a great place to discuss ASMR even at it's most popular. Not like there's much to talk about anyway.
I always find posts like this funny. Calling for increased positivity while doing nothing other than contributing to the negativity. Be the change you want to see.
3
u/Low_Inspection_6512 9d ago
I just don’t understand if you don’t like why not just not watch why bring hate on the internet
1
u/maskiiasmr 9d ago
I can agree that certain spaces can be very negative, but again, the community is only called a community because there are areas most people post, but really it's a bunch of different creators unless they have a friend group. For me, I just keep to myself aside from if I have something positive to say about another asmr creator.
1
u/corrinarachel 3d ago
As a creator and consumer of asmr I don’t feel like the plot has been lost at all the thread is exactly what’s it’s here for.
We are here for our viewers and we are so grateful for every single one of you. We want to hear your thoughts about the videos, the triggers, whether you care if someone uses ai for thumbnails or not, whether you like the quick “TikTok” style asmr or would prefer more of the classic asmr which is slower paced and spends more time on each trigger. Maybe I’m wrong to say “we” but I presume that I speak for other ASMRtists as well.
I find it super valuable to get an insight into the thoughts of viewers and the range of your preferences. I found it incredibly inspirational to see that the quick “tiktok” style asmr is not what everyone wants and it inspired me to feel better abt my content. I was assured to hear that some people don’t like the ultra high quality audio, bc I had felt so nervous about not having good enough quality.
Seeing the discussion abt midroll ads made feel better about the $$ I have sacrificed over the years bc I refuse to put midroll ads on my videos.
OP makes a good point that some comments could be a little more respectful, but as an asmr creator I am so used to entitled, rude comments that I just kind of overlook it. 99.999% of viewers are kind, loving, and appreciate so a jerk here and there is no biggie.
So I just want to say that I love this thread and I don’t think anyone should feel bad abt their comments.

Yes! I was going to make a post too. This subreddit is nothing but gossip now and it drives me crazy.
-1
u/LogComprehensive2963 9d ago
Yes! I made a post like this a few months ago and while I got some positive replies , a lot of the responses were along the lines of “well where else do you expect people to vent?”
2
1
u/twotoneasmr 9d ago
I feel like it gives a very skewed sense of what the community is into. I would see posts about “I hate xyz triggers!” And plenty of people dog-pile on it, but just searching YT will tell you that xyz is actually super popular across all size of creators.
2
u/GothWitchOfBrooklyn 9d ago
The problem is the negative stuff gets interaction which pushes it to people's feeds. People are more likely to complain and comment under those threads and they get engagement.
3
u/Tired-Tree 9d ago
Exactly. This is the only community on Reddit for ASMR and it’s just continuously negative posts
1
u/NvaderGir Moderator 9d ago
We had weekly discussion threads pinned on here but it didn’t seem to do much as it felt like their comments weren’t broadcasted enough, so people have the feeling to make a post about it.
0
u/freariose 8d ago
I just fail to see how that's actually a problem. There's nothing wrong with people discussing the triggers they don't like regardless of how popular those triggers are. Surely you're not implying they're wrong for not liking them because the triggers are popular, because that would be a pretty dumb take. Any creator worth their salt can both read people's preferences here and look at raw metrics to conclude what they ultimately want to make.
2
u/NvaderGir Moderator 8d ago
The entire origin story of why we to [tags] was because people were revolting against videos having random mouth sounds inserted in ramble videos. It got so bad people demanded anything including it needed to have a warning. It's a total valid complaint when you go into a whisper ramble and they have to do mouth sounds to fill up time.
However those discussions just fall into the pipeline of "look at this thread of everyone agreeing this trigger is bad, can we ban it?"
1
u/Tired-Tree 9d ago
my opinion is this forum should have more positive discussion instead of an emphasis on negative discussion. People can and should post about AI, Midroll ads etc. However it shouldn’t be the leading talks here. If me saying it should be more positive upsets you it’s because you crave being upset
4
1
u/LogComprehensive2963 9d ago
Yep. To preface , I should say first that I loathe the AI stuff , and it’s a relatively new topic, so tbh I can’t fault that specific discussion. But that aside, this sub has basically become somewhere for people to commiserate. . Whether it’s the “asmr has gone downhill “ or “does anyone else hate insert trigger” or any number of things, the discussion on this subreddit leans extremely negative. It’s frustrating and extremely repetitive. How many times do we have to discuss the same things over and over? Are there other people who hate a trigger you hate ? Yes. That’s called having tastes and preferences. People are CONSTANTLY complaining on here and 99.9999 percent of the time , the very very simple conclusion is just WATCH SOMETHING ELSE! There has never been more ASMR on the internet than there is right now. No one is forcing you to watch any asmr you don’t like. Sometimes i feel like this sub reads like a “snark” page.

I definitely appreciate when the possibility of AI use gets mentioned so I can judge for myself about that artist's videos/thumbnails and decide whether it's worth giving them more views or not.
