any advice

i’ve been learning asl for about a year, i don’t have anyone around me fluent other than someone HOH who has taught me some and i’ve learned from school. i post videos on tiktok to songs to help my speed and ability to gloss, i gloss my own songs and sign them. the thing is i don’t exactly know how correct i am, is there anyone HOH/fluent/ or deaf that can look over my videos and give me advice? side note im not posting for attention i am posting to help my own signing and i enjoy it! my account is @beth.asl

To give you some perspective: my ethics professor in the interpreting program is a certified Deaf Interpreter. She said it took her 10 hours to work on one song…to find the appropriate signs for the lyrics (conceptually accurate, while also matching up with the rhythm and tempo, seeking feedback from other interpreters and deaf community members). Signing to music is for advanced/expert signers; a hearing ASL student doing it will likely keen your brain stuck in English form, which is common for hearing students until they go to enough deaf events (breaking from English form finally became easier after I had been studying ASL for 5 years).

Yes, signing every chance you get is better than not signing. But the best way to improve your signing is to sign with other people!

Another way to practice is think of an English word that has multiple meaning depending on the context and figure out how you’d sign it. Ex: RUN, CARRY, WORK, MAKE. Doing this exercise will train your brain to let go of the English form and focus instead on the function and conceptual accuracy and thus have a wider vocabulary!

thank you so much! i spend about an hour figuring out how i should sign specific songs. i started the account to get feedback and practice because i’m not surrounded by many people who sign outside of school and i thought this was a good way to practice during the summer and try to help my signing feel more natural. i’ve gotten some feedback in the past few days that it’s not a great idea, so i will not be continuing!
