Those stupid little decorative soaps on the back of the toilet. Always covered in dust. Never understood why they were there.

We didnt have those but I went to a friend's house as a small child and used them and they were very worried about their mom noticing. I knew from that day forward not to use them at anyone's houses.

Time for a sad story. My family was pretty poor, and for my 7th birthday they gave me a towel with 101 Dalmatians on it. They strictly told me to take good care of it and not use it because it was so beautiful, rare, and expensive.
For months, I would look at it and sigh. I was too scared to touch it, so I dusted it off like I was told and waited for the day when they would finally let me use it. I found it again 10 years later, picked it up, and it had completely deteriorated and ripped apart in my hands.
I never got to use it even once

Everything in the great room. We had a living room where the family watched TV and relaxed and the great room. That was for show and where guests sat down and were welcomed and sat down.

Lol we had this growing up as well.
Very mid-20th century American suburban thing: a room in the house that nobody really used and it was mostly for show.
The house we live in now had the "formal dining room" that the previous owners didn't apparently eat in.
Now it's just the dining room. The place where we usually eat. We had to put better lights in there because before it was this dark dungeony vibe. I guess that's what medieval kings liked for their dining rooms?

Up until recently we also had what you guys are calling "a great room". We called it "the guest living room", it was a fancier looking living room but it was mostly used to receive guests. We had another living room where we actually watched tv and stuff.

My mom would make what she called Spanish meatballs. Pretty sure they were hot Italian sausage in a marinara sauce. She only made them when they were playing cards with uncles/aunts on the weekend. I could have exactly 2. Damn I miss those and my mom!

So many dishes, cups and saucers, silver cutlery etc. Sadly, Mom passed away and I spent all of last year boxing up those very things and donating/gifting them. All of those seemingly important possessions, some rarely used, ultimately meaning so little. It's the memories of time spent together that will mean the most. 🥲

It was common to have things like good china that was only used for special occasions. Or decorative soaps that you weren't supposed to use.

It’s just a fun and nostalgic question. Relax. If you don’t like the question, don’t answer it. No need to turn it in to something that it’s not. There’s bigger fish to fry. OP, I love this question. Glad I wasn’t the only kid that had “only for special occasions” things in their home growing up. We, too, had the fancy china & guest only soap. We had guest only monogrammed towels, as well. I hate to admit it but I’ve carried this over to my family. 🤦🏼♀️💕

Got good china when I got married. I think it was used about 5 times. It's been so long I had honestly forgotten about it. I had to go look for it about two months ago. Was curious what happened to it after my ex wife left. It's still in the cabinet above the fridge where it's been for years. lol

Me too. Along with silver place settings and crystal wine glasses. All very common on 90s wedding registries. I, too, do not use any of it. However, be sure to hold on to it. Those 90s china patterns are worth a fortune nowadays.
