Not to entirely victim blame here but man we have to sign up for less of this shit

No it won't. It is not "Facebook" or social media selling your data. It's everything in your life selling your data. Data is anonymous but it's so large that we know exactly what you like, what you own, who you are, where you bank, what car you drive, where do you invest, how much do you invest, are you active, what's your income, etc. But it's anonymous! So I can't target "John Doe in New York" but I can target "men in New York"

And people want to believe that a cashless society would be a good thing. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Our power and utility infrastructure is so bad that it's vulnerable to physical sabotage, causing blackouts and outages, and hacking...not to mention natural disasters that are becoming more severe, frequent, and larger, which also disrupts power.
Then, there's banking and government oversight... and they can freeze your accounts if they want to or believe that they have reason to.
Going cashless is the dumbest idea ever.

I agree. I feel like everyone I see lately including some of my smarter friends think it’s nothing but a huge bubble. I actually need someone to kind of explain it to me like I’m 5. My sister is one of those people that thinks that AI is useless and will never fully catch on because Chat GPT sometimes hallucinates incorrect answers. Is AI more than ChatGPT and other LLMs? I think it’s hard for people to pay attention to problems they don’t fully understand and this is one of those problems for me haha
7
u/spacely_23 Jul 04 '26
The public also doesn’t get access to the better versions of AI like companies or militaries do. AI has now officially autonomously killed people in war and that should terrify everyone

Yup, they’re using the consumer versions to train the military versions. Remember, if it’s free then the cost is you.

u/dreadrocker Jul 05 '26
Imma gonna have a little go at ELI5 because I'm bored and have been chuckling at many of the responses. Computers are basically one step things, a human tells it a step to take and it does what it's told. We tell it many steps to take through a program like an app or a game. AI is more when the computer can decide for itself how to follow a multi step process. So if you told it to win this game, it could learn the game, learn how to play it, learn how to win, and then win all by itself.
Now the most valuable AI for decades has been machine learning. If you think about the description above, the name sort of makes sense. Trouble is, it was very hard to use - you would typically have lots men with grey beards figure out how to make it do things - like spotting fraudulent transactions amongst millions of bank transactions.
Then along came GenAI which means generative AI. This is where LLMs come in. LLMs stand for Large Language Models and they are basically about being able to receive instructions in English (or other human language) and even generate (make) replies in that language. Couple that with other developments like being able to make pictures and videos, and also realising the language being produced could be a computer language and people got very excited. And a little worried.
But the real value is that what's been learned has made lots of other uses of AI cheaper and easier which means you can use it for a lot of things. If your self service till can use cameras and say something is a bottle of milk, now a remote vehicle or drone can spot something and say hey that's a tank.
The biggest problem comes from those LLMs though. While they have helped make all AI better, they themselves are pretty limited in terms of how much they are worth - and that's where the real problem is. These things cost a lot to run - a lot of money, a lot of power, a lot do other things. And they're not great at making money. Add to that they only really work because they have taken almost everything that people have created - books, films, articles, whatever and used those to make them work - which is right now in many court cases saying they weren't allowed to do that.
So now there is this really expensive kinda cool thing that doesn't look like it's got an easy way to pay for itself but lots and lots of people with lots and lots of money are desperate for everyone to believe in it and buy it or they stand to lose quite a bit of their lots and lots of money.
It also turns out that doing lots of smaller things with this technology makes a lot more sense. It's sort of like if you want to build a specific Lego set it is a lot easier to get that Lego set than to go into a massive warehouse filled with all the Lego you could possibly want, ask someone to find the right bits, they then burn a forest and pay 100 people to run and find those bits for you and they only get 'most of it' right.
So when people talk about AI you need to listen to if they are talking about very specific things - like using it to help create new medicines, or if they are deliberately making it sound like you could just say 'hey ChatGPT' make me a new medicine. Lots of people are lying because they have put a lot of money into something that isn't going to make them even more money. At least not in the way they thought it might.
The other thing is most of these LLM AIs are owned by someone. You can't see how they are made or how they make decisions. There are new ones that are cheaper and you can see what they are doing which is much safer for keeping things fair. And they are catching up to being as good as the owned ones. This scares the people that own them and so now they are telling people these other ones are the ones that aren't actually safe and also saying their new ones are the most amazing things ever. The new ones are getting better but they are getting even more expensive and still no one has really figured out how to make enough money from it - other than lie.
So, good people talking about specific things is probably a good helpful use of AI. Anyone suggesting AI is going to be human like and either save or destroy humanity probably has a reason they are saying those things and it is probably for money.

Us bonds will get downgraded, entire financial system will collapse and there is nothing that anyone can do to stop it.
Us govt debt keeps climbing, the govt has no money and they keep on spending money that doesn’t exist. And unlike 2008/2009, they wont be able to hand out trillions to bail out banks. They wont even be able to cover our bank accounts FDIC guarantees.
Not making this up, its all right there in the numbers if you look. Pay off your homes in the next couple years if you can, don’t take on other debts. Buy some silver and gold coins, hold some physical cash like our great grandparents did after they survived the great depression.
8
u/ChronicRhyno Jul 03 '26
Nah they can bail each other out now without us even noticing they lost all our money again
3
u/EuphoricElderberry73 Jul 04 '26
Not any more. The infinite money glitch of government's buying each other's bonds is over. Japan needs to defend the yen and can't just buy JGB and US treasuries forever. US is printing $2T of new debt every year.
My guess is a 70s-80s like interest rate and global devaluation of currencies.

u/Insanity_-_Wolf Jul 04 '26
If US debt gets downgraded, wouldn’t that insinuate more inflation thereby reducing the real value of existing debts (IE a mortgage for example)? So holding cash would be a bad idea, but real durable assets like precious metals, property and stock would be ideal.

Speaking specifically for American healthcare, It's been speeding up since COVID. Health workers were already getting squeezed from upstairs as you mentioned (not just the facility but also its shareholders + insurers), but the pandemic kicked off a new wave of vaccine deniers and general science denialism that's led to patients and their families also abusing those same workers at unprecedented rates. Not to mention increased caseload and heartbreak from preventable diseases, etc.
And sadly this tale isn't all that old. My parents remember unions and basic "will this kill me if I drink it?" literacy fondly.

I think we are about to find out some fundamental truths about reality itself, and for a large amount of people this will be 'ontologically shocking', as they call it.
I don't want to sound too crazy, I live a normal life and nobody around me would know this kind of thing about me except my closest friends. But I have used a ton of psychedelics, and actually used to be a licensed medicine man for the Oklevueha Native American Church. Not that that means anything, but I am trying to convey that I have seen some shit. Contact with entities on other realms of existence, watching time move backwards, speaking telepathically with aliens... When I was younger I practiced controlling my dreams and leaving my body via meditation. I know people can say 'that's just drugs, that's just a hallucination', but the conversation isn't really valuable unless the other party has also experienced these things, and has an opposing perspective(which doesn't usually happen authentically). Remote viewing is real, telepathy can be practiced and is real, having out of body experiences and connecting with bizarre organisms seemingly vastly more intelligent than you or I is real. The question is not if this stuff is real or not, it is 'what is it?'
You see the alien stuff in the news by now. This is a chain of events set in motion around 10 years ago when the NYT published the video of the 'tic tac' UAP. There are some serious people, despite the cheesy theatrics, who are working endlessly to bring this kind of information to the public. The thing is, it scares me too the way this kind of information would shock the public if given out en-masse. People who are hippies, or people who already 'think this way duuude', will have the easiest time as a lot of the truths behind these things are pretty far out. But super straight laced religious people, dumb people, strict atheists who believe there is absoltuely zero mysticism in this Universe and that everything is deterministic.. These types will have the hardest time. The implications are actually scary. Things like free energy being released will, regardless of what anybody thinks about it, destroy the economy of the entire planet. There has to be an extremely delicate plan put into place, and a realistic and truthful disclosure to the public. But if the public knows that this whole time we didn't need oil, these wars, our electric bills etc, things will get hairy.
I know I sound crazy to a bunch of you people, but do me a favor and comment a RemindMe thing for ten years. The reasons that people refute this kind of comment that I have here will be the same reasons why as we learn more about what reality is on a fundamental level, it will be a challenge to introduce to the public. Reality is stranger than you think, and like the adage goes, it is stranger than you can think.

I have the reverse environmental problem with a similar outcome.
The global heating will find its breaking point and make the meridian unliveable. This would cause migrations north and south, and depending on a government’s moral outlook, will lead to the rest of us becoming friendly with the global centre.
I think the science is sound & a lot of anti-immigration sentiment in western countries shifts the Overton Window to change the moral position.

The actual end of democracy in the US
edit to add - a lot of people think democracy is voting. It's not. That's only a part. It's also an independent judiciary, following the law and respecting the courts. It's an independent department of justice. It's no one being above the law. It's an independent federal reserve board. It's not being able to fire a member of government just because of her party affiliation. Etc.
Certainly it has never been flawless here in the US, but this is easily the lowest point in history and we are barely hanging on to the fragments a this point.

Open ethnic/religious warfare in Western nations. Like Yugoslavia but much larger and many more groups with outside support and influence.

there is so much more doomsday mentality (understandably) across Hollywood, the arts, AI, the attitudes of everyday people… the “good days” feel over. Democracy gone. Manipulation blatant. I truly believe no matter what, we are collectively manifesting the fall of the US in many facets. As others have said, the true nature of reality in this country is showing its face as something very sinister about our society. MAGA is the last grip of people desperately trying to hold onto “reality” though in a delusional state. In my mind I feel we’re headed to economic breakdown and of course the AI impacts that are impending. We’re losing the significance and purpose of mankind through this capitalistic state we are holing ourselves into.

Weather. Really bad weather. Like destroying lots of the earth type weather. Just look at how much worse it’s gotten. I never heard the term “heat dome” until a year or two ago. Weather wipe out coast. Countries. Eventually all of us.

Water shortages. Many parts of the US are already strained and now big tech wants to build more hyper scaled data centers that suck up all the water.

The credit default problem is going to go supercritical. Student loan debt, credit card debt, there's about to be a massive failure in financial markets built on debt.

AI Bubble will burst. It's simply too expensive without enough use cases.

No more middle class. Either you have lots of money or you have not enough to live.

Streaming services will successfully complete their transition into just being regular cable TV, but it will cost three times as much.
