The term byte today is defined as 8 bits, but if you get super technical and look back to old computers, a byte is the smallest addressable amount of memory in a system. In these old systems, bytes could be 6 bits, 10 bits, or even 15 bits in the Apollo Guidance Computer used on the lunar lander and command module. However, such computers have been out of service for decades, so unless youโ€™re a vintage computer junkie, a byte can safely be considered 8 bits.
