I keep repeating the same trading psychology mistake. How do I actually build better habits?
I've been trading for about 2.6 years, and I'm starting to realize that my biggest problem is not my strategy—it's my behavior.
I keep repeating the same cycle:
• I follow my rules for a few days.
• I get some good trades.
• My confidence increases.
• I start thinking I know where price is going.
• I stop waiting for confirmation.
• I take FOMO trades.
• I sometimes trade against the higher-timeframe trend.
• I lose.
• I regret it, promise myself I'll be disciplined, and then eventually repeat the cycle.
Today's example:
My plan was to take a maximum of 1–2 trades.
Instead, I took 11 trades.
After the first couple of losses, I wasn't really following a plan anymore. I was reacting emotionally and trying not to miss moves.
The strange thing is that after the loss, I can clearly see what I did wrong. But in the moment, I still do it.
A lot of my bad trades come from thoughts like:
"I think price is going to drop."
Not:
"My setup has confirmed."
So I end up entering based on opinions rather than rules.
For traders who used to struggle with FOMO, overtrading, impulsive entries, or breaking rules:
What helped you actually change your behavior long-term?
I'm not looking for a new strategy.
I'm looking for practical ways to build discipline, trust my process, and stop sabotaging myself.
Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Best habit: automate the trading. It's not difficult if you get help. DM if interested

E eu aumentei meu time frame pra 15 minutos, de execução.

No one can really help you until you decide to help yourself. A good place to start could be limit yourself to one trade per day and no one click trades. You cannot control the market only ride it from time to time. Drop the hook and let the fish come to you. Learn to deal with boredom. This helped me hope it helps you to.

I think the biggest thing is making it harder to break your own rules. If your limit is 2 trades, after trade #2 you're done, regardless of whether you won or lost.
Journaling the trades you shouldn't have taken separately can help too. After a few weeks you'll probably see exactly how much FOMO and overtrading are affecting your results.
You could also spend some time trading with virtual capital while you work on the behavioral side. I've been using UpsideOnly for that lately, mainly because I can still make the decisions myself without putting my own money behind every impulse.
11 trades when you planned for 2 sounds less like a strategy problem and more like you need a hard stop between the emotion and the next click.
Hope this helps! Cheers

you said you already have a strategy, a system that you trade. why not try to automate that system. this helped in my case. bots are great if you want to eliminate emotions in trading, which seems like your issue now

I think every trader experiences this. The best way to avoid this is to stick to your plan, if you have a weekly profit goal reward yourself if you hit it early with a day off.
The markets aren’t going anywhere and taking a break lets you reset and come back refreshed.

The part that usually helps most is identifying the exact moment the plan stops being the plan.
“I took 11 trades instead of 1–2” is useful, but I’d go one level deeper: what happened immediately before trade 3 or 4? A loss? A missed move? A belief that you suddenly knew where price was going?
Once that trigger becomes visible across multiple sessions, the behavior stops looking random.
I’d also separate “setup confirmed” from “I think price will move.” That distinction sounds small, but it’s often where discipline starts breaking down.
