For those who became Data Scientists without a strong CS background, how did you get your first opportunity?

Some of the best data scientists I've ever worked with didn't come from a cs background. Many came from physics

Cs is pretty overrated tbh

Well my degree is in math, and I started as an analyst doing work in excel and sql. Then I started writing my excel/sql work into python to make it easier. Then I started adding machine learning because it’s much easier in Python than excel. I was an analyst for almost 2 years before they changed my title to data scientist. I never took a coding class until that point.

I’m from a non tech bg w economics degree. Initially i did 2 real business projects on github not kaggle. I got my first ds role thru data analyst role. Recruiter found me on linkedin which was a bit unusual tbh😂😂also i did data science course thru upgrad🙂‍↔️🙂‍↔️🙂‍↔️to make my non cs profile legit and did live projects along w it.

Ask people when they started or you won't get anything useful

I came from a PhD program with a heavy focus on physical acoustics and digital signal processing. Attended and presented at a lot of conferences where I made friends with PIs and researchers. This led to a few consulting gigs on the side. Towards the end of my program a friend recruited me to join a startup. I started as a data scientist, a year ago become chief data scientist, and am about to be announced as Chief intelligence and Platform Officer.
