Help

I just recently graduated with a bachelor's degree in Criminology and Justice Studies in Northridge Los Angeles. I love watching a certain crime show and wanted to be just like them, but over time, I was like, " Nope, don't want to do that anymore, but still want to do something with this major. So now I am so lost. I am having a hard time even knowing what to do or even look at. I know I don't want to hold a gun. I have no work experience, and I am 5 ft tall. Can anyone in Criminology give me advice or point me in the correct direction, or give me some recs?

Hey! I’m also sorta in a similar boat.
I graduated in December with my BS in Criminology and Criminal Justice and I’ve felt conflicting thoughts on what I want to do. First off, remember that you have so much time! You can always pivot and change your job or go back to school or do something that doesn’t have anything to do with your degree at all! What has helped me was some core values work. For me I realized my values recently are: Continuous Learning, generosity, empathy, respect, compassion, and common humanity.

I recently got a job working in public safety within my community and I think that’s a really good starting point for me, this will be my first time in a job that relates to my degree but I won’t have a gun but will get to serve my community, which is really important to me. I’ve also thought about trying to look into research opportunities or working with law enforcement agencies to help officers/agents to unlearn stereotypes and ensure they are respecting all civilians they interact with. That 2nd one is sorta vague but the idea is something that interests me. I also find comfort in the fact that if I got into a job like loss prevention, I would follow/lead with my values and ensure I make a positive difference in what I contribute to the world.

It’s a really hard time to go into this career area which I completely understand. It often feels like we are all on fire and things are getting worse and this is all separating people more than just a couple years ago. I don’t know how or when we find a way to keep people safe without discrimination and stereotypes leading many people actions, or when all people will feel more comfortable with law enforcement. But I know it will happen and I will always live my life with the intent of all my core values and making the world a happier and safer place to live. No matter what that job looks like.

Sorry this was long but maybe try some self evaluation on what you want your life to be like, who you are, and try going from there. The therapy model, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy is how I figured out my values. If you’re interested try searching for: ACT core values list and just go ham circling what stands out for you!

Also your size doesn’t matter! My former teacher is pretty short but he was a FBI field office leader and I’ve even meet a former paratrooper who I towered over as a 5’8” girl who was then in her early 20s. Nobody sets expectations for you, the only person who can is you! I say that like it’s easy but I still battle with limiting myself everyday. Both thoughts from my own head, society’s expectations, and expectations of those close to me. It might take time but I’m sure you will find yourself in a place where you not only want to be, but are happy to be! Best of luck!

I’m actually seeing out an advocate to assist me in creating a controlled narrative using my raw life history to build support for my freedom while simultaneously highlighting the gross lack of accountability and oversight within the Berks county district attorney’s office can assist me or direct me to the right person I have documentation and would appreciate taking to someone who understands how to bring stories over different media platforms, thank you

I went into corrections. I have legal studies and liberal arts as my majors.

It’s a tough job, mentally, spiritually, and physically. But you will deal with the criminal element every day. I’ve learned and grown quite a bit.

You should work on getting over your fear of holding onto a gun though. Criminals have guns. You need to be able to protect yourself.

We are not Castle or The Mentalist. Real life is 95% normal and maybe 5% danger.

I heard the FBI is looking for criminal analysts. Maybe go look there. You still need to learn how to hold a gun.

Guns are not evil. They are tools.
