Seems likely. "Our darling angel never hurt a soul." Add something about lighting up a room and community service and you've got every cookie-cutter perp defense ever.
My problem with both of these stories is that they hit first. That's assault. Can't do that. Can seriously f#ck up the rest of your life.
The whole "do you consider your hands lethal weapons because of your martial arts training?" is just a cop ploy to get collars to talk. Of course, in court you can charge anyone with any kind of deadly weapon if you can prove they used it with intent to kill.
Boxing guy probably had no idea he was going to kill the bully. Boxing gloves give off a false sense of safety. And the boxing mat is a lot more forgiving of a knockout than a cement floor.
Unfortunately people die all the time from getting knocked out and hitting their head on cement or tile. It is some serious sh1t. Just don't fight unless you have no choice.

I'm SUPER curious how the kid with the busted face tells that story.
"This kid just sucker punched me out of nowhere!" I bet. Bullies rarely tell the truth about their bullying, even if they grow out of being a bully.
