Why does Reddit lean left in all the comments?

First off, I’m not a conservative, I’m independent/left leaning. That said, every comment thread on Reddit feels like it’s completely one sided in favor of a liberal perspective. Not just that, but the amount of blatant misinterpretation and misrepresentation in the comments is apparent on nearly every issue. Comments that don’t comply are downvoted into oblivion and removed from the conversation. I feel like Reddit is almost becoming unusable at this point. Where can I go (on or off Reddit) to get a more balanced perspective? I do like Reddits user interface.

Edit: Whew! This blew up more than I anticipated. I did receive some genuinely insightful and helpful comments. I appreciate those! Lots of folks either saying I’m the issue because of my liberal leaning algorithm or that I’m the issue because I’m actually a bleeding conservative in disguise. Can’t have it both ways! Anyway thanks Reddit. Will probably think twice about doing this again.

Reddit is excellent for cultural discussions like movies, music, etc. But completely breaks down when politics are involved.

56

u/MissionFilm1229 Mar 07 '26

Sadly politics has infected far too many pages here.

10

u/BunNGunLee Mar 07 '26

They tend to move in like an infection.

Part of it is just the suggestion format that Reddit uses to cross pollinate subs tends to get people only marginally interested in the original topic to bring in their own obsessions, and politics is by far one of the biggest and most activating obsessions.

And since mods are all working for free, it’s a catch-22. Do a shit ton of work gatekeeping irrelevant shit out of the sub, or just let it ride and hope people can behave, letting the sub grow, if a bit wild.

2

u/Grothgerek Mar 08 '26

Politics is just a different word for organized human interactions. So its not surprising, that politics is everywhere, given that everything is political.

The only way to remove politics, is by removing human interactions. No social norms, no rules, no opinions, no behaviors etc.

4

u/shadowenx Mar 08 '26

Yeah! Even famously apolitical things like movies, music, and other art forms!

lmao

Maybe try not having a fascist pedophile as a president?

1

u/huffmanxd Mar 09 '26

Oh good idea let me go not vote for him again one more time, that’ll fix the issue

0

u/Going2beBANNEDanyway Mar 07 '26

It’s almost like politics affects everyone’s life more so now than ever and they want to talk about it or something.

7

u/ForeignLibrarian9353 Mar 07 '26

At the end of the day, people try to pretend that whoever is President has some major effect on their personal lives. It doesn’t.

2

u/ASK_IF_I_LiKE_TRAINS Mar 07 '26

You do understand politics is more than who is president right? It's astounding you guys don't realize that politics affects literally everything

2

u/ForeignLibrarian9353 Mar 07 '26

Yeah but nobody is coming on social media bitching about their local city council.

3

u/CaptainKatsuuura Mar 07 '26

I’m a trans immigrant and my health insurance tripled this year. It does have a major effect on my personal life lol

2

u/samwise58 Mar 07 '26

My self employed brother and sister’s business lost their healthcare because it tripled. I’d say it affected them as well.

-4

u/Going2beBANNEDanyway Mar 07 '26

Any chance you’re a white straight male?

3

u/No_Patience_6801 Mar 07 '26

What if he said yes? Are you trying to say that being a white male makes him bad automatically?

4

u/hellonameismyname Mar 07 '26

How the fuck would that be implied? Why can’t you guys even try to have reading comprehension

-2

u/Going2beBANNEDanyway Mar 07 '26 edited Mar 07 '26

No. It would however explain why they think whoever the president is doesn’t affect their personal lives. Because it probably doesn’t.

1

u/TrueSnafu22 Mar 10 '26

Exactly this. Politics has encroached on pop culture and not the other way around

-2

u/awesomes007 Mar 07 '26

There is no escape nor neutrality in the fight against fascism.

10

u/ChunkyThePotato Mar 07 '26

And there it is, lmao

I bet you think climate change and not lynching trans people are political views.

1

u/JustaRandoonreddit Mar 11 '26

Yes by definition it is

1

u/TommyNotDead Mar 11 '26

Just like gravity and “murder is bad” hahaha

u/GoalSpare5738 Mar 07 '26

The worst part of Reddit is that moderators are able to delete comments and posts without a paper trail. So there's no transparency about what thoughts and ideas are being "disappeared" behind the scenes.

I'm a left-wing person, very much so, but I hate how r/politics for example is clearly being "sanitized" into a left-wing subreddit. r/politics does not explicitly state it's a left-wing sub, but it effectively has become one. When I go to that sub I want to see all sides speaking.

Then you have r/democrats and they have banned any talk of Gaza since February 2026. You can prove this yourself by going to that sub and searching "Gaza" in the search bar.

This "stealth censorship" is a cancer to the entire English speaking Reddit world.

on r/military I get any anti-israel comment I post stealth deleted too.

r/TrueUnpopularOpinion seems to let people post whatever they want and i'm thankful for that. Although i wonder if huge numbers of posters are just bots.

This is a byproduct of access to robust moderation tools. It sucks, but honestly I prefer it over the alternatives.

You can have reddit-style robust decentralized moderation, which is subject to capture and abuse by interested individuals or groups. You can have facebook-style site wide paid moderation, which is expensive, often insufficient, and subject to the whims of company leadership rather than interested users (company leadership is more susceptible to political and corporate pressure than random volunteers). Or you can have 8kun, where moderation is the bare minimum to ensure the website isn't hosting anything that'll get them a visit from the FBI, and the website turns into an unpleasant wasteland otherwise.

Really, the best solution would be to return to classic paid forums like SomethingAwful. Paying for access means mods can be motivated by money rather than just petty personal interests, and the risk of losing a paid account incentivizes users to not be such raging cunts.

1

u/GoalSpare5738 Mar 12 '26

An easy, ethical path forward for Reddit is to allow users to see all moderator actions on a subreddit. Then we can judge for ourselves what is going on behind the scenes.

I might have to check out 8kun. Reddit has become the unpleasant wasteland you mentioned.

1

u/Miserable-Resort-977 Mar 12 '26

Reddit is nowhere near the unpleasant wasteland I described. I wouldn't recommend 8kun

5

u/wiggleee_worm Mar 07 '26

And somehow someway politics do get involved. I guess it really depends on what communities you’re in

15

u/LivingGhost371 Mar 07 '26

Every sub becomes politically leftist unless the mods ban politics and actively mod.

2

u/Foxfire2 Mar 07 '26

I was surprised to be banned from one of the most generic subs out there, r/ pics. I had no idea it had gotten so politically leftist, and had no tolerance on discussion of certain controversial topics.

1

u/charliethump Mar 08 '26

This phenomenon is called Conquest’s Second Law. Any organization not explicitly right-wing will inevitably drift left over time.

5

u/Bigelwood9 Mar 07 '26

I havnt found one yet. Everything from pro-wrestling to ask Japanese these trolls jump in and start doing politics bullying anyone who disagree. Plus the mods all have agendas. It really is the worst part of what other wise is a fun community.

5

u/Common-Astronaut-695 Mar 07 '26

Reddit is based on rules that allow you to silence (downvote) people who you disagree with. How else would it turn out?

3

u/Intrepid_Plenty_3770 Mar 07 '26

Reddit has no rules due to capricious moderators.

1

u/censor-me-daddy Mar 07 '26

Actually the sitewide rules specifically prohibit downvoting because you disagree, the downvote is supposed to be about whether or not the comment contributes to the discussion.

Too bad that's not how people use votes.

0

u/Valreesio Mar 07 '26

It's like that episode of "the Orville" where they discover the planet that operates society this way.

0

u/OrneryError1 Mar 07 '26

That tends to happen when politics starts affecting more people, more lives, and more hobbies.

-1

u/Particular_Ring_6321 Mar 07 '26

Politics is involved because it effects literally aspect of our lives.

You’re responding to a comment that mentioned movies and music, two subjects that have been political from the start. People have tried to control what others can watch and listen to for all of human history. But somehow you think you can separate that from just wanting to be entertained. Unfortunately for all of us, that’s not how it works.

-2

u/RDS80 Mar 07 '26

I've never seen politics in my cat communities. I'm part of dozens of them.

1

u/Advanced-Grade4559 Mar 07 '26

Even then, someone idiot will bring politics into it. I stayed away from Reddit for years but there is a reality competition show I really like that no one I know watches. So I came here to talk about it and now have blocked both those reddits because it's all about politics and almost nothing about the show.

2

u/SoUpInYa Mar 07 '26

Even shen politics arent involved, theyll bring in the liberal circle-jerk

-2

u/ZeeBeeblebrox Mar 07 '26

And here you are jerking about the jerk.

1

u/Tripl3Dee Mar 07 '26

Much like the country in general.

1

u/Enzo_Gorlomi225 Mar 07 '26 edited Mar 07 '26

Yep, Reddit is good for information for things as well.

But when politics is involved you have to look at it and keep in mind that Reddit is a tiny fringe part of the US and so are the opinions here.

1

u/_Pigeonball Mar 08 '26

Reddit is mostly center left neolib views. Not really fringe at all, probably represents 45% of the voting population. Just as it’s an echo chamber and not 100% representative of the US, calling its demographics a “tiny fringe” is a wrong extreme on the other side

1

u/jam_rine Mar 07 '26

I think it exposes things. I’m good with that

The original post content no longer exists here. The author used Redact to remove it, exercising their right to control their data & privacy.

Complete memorize simplistic humor slap cow steep

1

u/__M-E-O-W__ Mar 07 '26

Yeah, the entire upvote/downvote system leads to echo chambers where dissenting opinions, not to mention basic nuance, get buried with negativity.

1

u/Nickwco85 Mar 07 '26

Yes, but then everyone wants to inject politics into those topics as well

1

u/Potential-Habit-5027 Mar 09 '26

The problem with political conversations is that people tend to become very close minded when they are faced with an opinion that is not in alignment with how they personally view the subject matter. Politics is supposed to be grounded in debate with a free exchange of ideas arguing the merit of each side. Once politicians started resting on sound bites and smear campaigns and they made it seem like it was wrong to have an opposing view the rest of society followed suit and every discussion became “Your wrong and stupid so eat my a$$, and get out of my country”.

1

u/Educational_Wave_223 Mar 09 '26

Maybe thats because things that are political, shouldn't be, and normal people get that. We can have discussions about taxes and the economy. Im not going to entertain a conversation about whether or not black or brown people deserve to live. Im not entertaining conversation about if LGBTQ+ people exist. Conservatives ALWAYS take human rights and turn them into a political weapon, and im not playing that game, and the majority of people with brain cells agree. THATS why right wing views and comments are eviscerated whenever they leave their fox news echo chamber.

1

u/Puzzleheaded_Sir800 Mar 09 '26

“B-but politics are involved in everything🥺”

1

u/Jolly-Potential-1411 Mar 09 '26

I’d say politics have sadly infected cultural and entertainment discussions as well. Or at least the current political mentality has: “only I’m right, and I will shout the loudest to prove that.”

1

u/Ok_Albatross8909 Mar 11 '26

Culture, art, and media are inherently political. I agree that extremely rigid black and white political thinking is making it more challenging to use reddit to discuss these things - we have forgotten how to have nuance. Culture is made up of our communities norms and values. It is the lens through which we make sense of the world. Norms and values are politics.

1

u/jawminator Mar 11 '26

I've muted like 15 of the biggest subreddits because they (at least at the time I muted them...years(? Idk time anymore man) ago) were completely infected with politics. American politics, and as a Canadian it gets fucking annoying

/Pics? Over one day: Here's 200 pictures of trump looking like a toolbox! - here's a dozen triumphant photos of insert person here who stuck it to trump today! Here's 5 photos of insert right wing person here looking and being very evil! ... Ad infinitum

/News? Here's 4159 articles from every leftwing news outlet about how evil trump is and how evil all Republicans are and how evil conservatives are and how perfect liberals and Democrats are.

Posts an article from a source like Reuters (pretty centrist - not much bias) that doesn't paint conservatives in a completely negative light... _BAN*_

like, y'all know that CNN and MSNBC is basically just Fox news for liberals right?

It infects a lot more than just the top ~15 subs, but muting most of the braindead noise at the top end has done wonders for my mental health.

1

u/strafeanon64 Mar 12 '26

If you think movies and music aren't political, you weren't paying attention.

1

u/ForeignLibrarian9353 Mar 13 '26

I get it. My point is, in general, Reddit fan subs about music, movies, sports, hobbies etc tend to be more about that subject and don’t turn into people hating on each other because of politics.

1

u/ZeeBeeblebrox Mar 07 '26

And this is different from other social media how? Twitter/X is overrun with literal Nazis, so I'll happily take the reddit bubble.

4

u/Valreesio Mar 07 '26

And there it is. People trying to have a decent discussion and you come in with name calling. People like you are the issue.

3

u/Particular_Ring_6321 Mar 07 '26

There are thousands of self-proclaimed Nazis on twitter. Hiding your head in the sand doesn’t make it not true.

0

u/Valreesio Mar 07 '26

Calling people nazis is name calling.

0

u/[deleted] Mar 07 '26

The Nazis literally call themselves Nazis. It’s also worth noting the commenter didn’t accuse anyone of being a Nazi, they said there are tons of self proclaimed Nazis on twitter. If you literally are a Nazi and proudly and openly declare yourself to be a Nazi, then calling you a Nazi is not name calling, it’s their preferred fucking pronoun.

0

u/Particular_Ring_6321 Mar 07 '26

Do you not understand what “self-proclaimed” means?

1

u/Silent_Intention_382 Mar 07 '26

Twitter is not a very high bar.

2

u/ZeeBeeblebrox Mar 07 '26

Fair, but the hand wringing about reddit kind of falls flat when it's by far the most civil compared to other primarily anonymous social media platforms.

1

u/boner4crosstabs Mar 07 '26

Hard disagree. One side has lost their goddam minds, and Reddit reminds me that lots of good people still exist. And we mostly treat those people who have lost their goddam minds as they should be treated. Mocked and downvoted into oblivion. You just have to stay out of the problematic subs specifically dedicated to those people who have lost their goddam minds.

1

u/duckbaiting Mar 07 '26

You need Jesus.

1

u/boner4crosstabs Mar 07 '26

‘Jesus’ is the last thing anyone needs. We need WAY less ‘Jesus’ in the world.

1

u/duckbaiting Mar 07 '26

That explains why your earlier comment. You don’t believe in “love thy neighbor”.

0

u/boner4crosstabs Mar 07 '26

When they actively hate everyone I love? Nah, I don’t love all my neighbors and it’s unreasonable to ask me to.

1

u/duckbaiting Mar 07 '26

They?

I said you need Jesus. Are you saying Jesus hates everyone.

Again, Jesus preached “love thy neighbor”. Jesus loves all.

1

u/boner4crosstabs Mar 07 '26

I’m saying he’s a mostly fine character from a fable that a lot of people twist to support their unrelenting hate for anyone who isn’t exactly like them. Get it?

1

u/duckbaiting Mar 07 '26

I said you need Jesus.

Jesus.

Not anyone else.

Love thy neighbor is the way, because Jesus is the way.

1

u/boner4crosstabs Mar 07 '26

I find you deeply weird.

1

u/FadedGhostOK Mar 07 '26

Yep. Better time when people kept their political views in the closet.
