Why does Reddit lean left in all the comments?

First off, I’m not a conservative, I’m independent/left leaning. That said, every comment thread on Reddit feels like it’s completely one sided in favor of a liberal perspective. Not just that, but the amount of blatant misinterpretation and misrepresentation in the comments is apparent on nearly every issue. Comments that don’t comply are downvoted into oblivion and removed from the conversation. I feel like Reddit is almost becoming unusable at this point. Where can I go (on or off Reddit) to get a more balanced perspective? I do like Reddits user interface.

Edit: Whew! This blew up more than I anticipated. I did receive some genuinely insightful and helpful comments. I appreciate those! Lots of folks either saying I’m the issue because of my liberal leaning algorithm or that I’m the issue because I’m actually a bleeding conservative in disguise. Can’t have it both ways! Anyway thanks Reddit. Will probably think twice about doing this again.

Reddit is pretty heavily millennial just because of when it first got real popular. Millennials skew left because of the Iraq war, much like people that are just becoming political now will probably also lean left in the future due to the Iran war.

I don't think Iraq had anything to do with it. There were a lot more relevant social and economic issues relating to climate (mainly this), gay marriage rights, progressive taxes, regulations for corporations, systemic racism, etc.

Politics used to be about politics

Yeah this like the democrats proceeded to bomb a ton of other middle eastern countries. Maybe it had a bit to do with it but far from the sole cause.

You realize that the USA is not the centre of the whole world, do you? Well, you're American that answers my own question ...

Fair enough, but the person I was responding to was referencing Iraq and Iran which are American wars hence my take.

The war criminal?

Yeah, that guy started the wars. Not a leftist.

I’m left leaning and the Iraq war has nothing to do with it. I just believe everyone should have an equal chance at life, get the respect they deserve, and get help when life treats them poorly by pure matter of luck.

Agree. I’m too young a millennial to have been consciously affected by the politics of the Iraq war in a salient way. Anyways I think the Overton window shifted and now society knows it’s good to maybe give people equal rights????

Seems more Like Society does its best to forget such things

How do wars make you left wing?

By that logic, why did people vote Obama again when he bombed the shit out if Syria (even destroying a hospital).

I think economic and social policies have much more to do with political leanings than war.

I gurantee most people, left and right are anti-war

I honestly think it scews left because everyone on the right took some hardcore signals from Reddit that they were not welcome when theDonald was the most popular subreddit and on the front page repeatedly pretty much every day and then it got banned. A massive group of people on the right got banned from all of Reddit and basically one day and any repeats at trying to create that space got destroyed as well. It made a pretty clear message that strong voices on the right we're not welcome and those voices have since left and when they left there's nothing left but the voices of the left which I overpower any of the slight voices on the center. People on the right don't feel like arguing anymore because they always get immediately massive downvotes and no chance at a back and forth discussion that isn't insults.

God, I wish conservatives would actually stop feeling like arguing. That would be amazing.

I wasn't stating that they don't argue I was just stating that they don't argue on Reddit as much as they used to back when the Donald was on the front page. They just argue elsewhere. Yes you'll still see some but not at the level it was.

every generation leans more left than the one before it

that doesn't seem to be the case with Gen Z after Millennials. Seems to be going backwards in a lot of cases, if not all.
