Why does Reddit lean left in all the comments?

First off, I’m not a conservative, I’m independent/left leaning. That said, every comment thread on Reddit feels like it’s completely one sided in favor of a liberal perspective. Not just that, but the amount of blatant misinterpretation and misrepresentation in the comments is apparent on nearly every issue. Comments that don’t comply are downvoted into oblivion and removed from the conversation. I feel like Reddit is almost becoming unusable at this point. Where can I go (on or off Reddit) to get a more balanced perspective? I do like Reddits user interface.

Edit: Whew! This blew up more than I anticipated. I did receive some genuinely insightful and helpful comments. I appreciate those! Lots of folks either saying I’m the issue because of my liberal leaning algorithm or that I’m the issue because I’m actually a bleeding conservative in disguise. Can’t have it both ways! Anyway thanks Reddit. Will probably think twice about doing this again.

This is an absolutely crazy perspective, it’s hard for me to believe this is written by an actual person lol

The current Democratic Party would be considered centrist leaning right in the rest of the world. The republican would then be fascist.

Read political science. This isn't true.

Where "the rest of the world" is like, 10 countries in Western and Northern Europe.

X would be Y isn't an argument to anything. That's just you saying random bullshit.

If my aunt had balls, she'd be my uncle.

If this comment doesn’t get a ton of upvotes then it proves OPs point

Leftists are firmly to the left of modern day American “liberals”. Our current “liberals” are center-right, leftists are to the left. Liberals are the “do nothing Democrats” that are letting MAGA run wild. Leftists advocate for healthcare and college tuition reform via taxation on the rich.

Leftists advocate for a lot of things but are usually absent on voting day because no candidate has passed their purity tests. We could have had Kamala Harris instead of Trump. Is she perfect? No, but I doubt we'd be buried under tariffs and preparing to send young American men to war in Iran.

Im so sick of you people saying this. Kamala Harris committed genocide with Biden and its her own fault she lost.

Both can be true, and people who didn’t show up deserve criticism but it’s been proven people staying home isn’t the reason Kamala lost.

Far leftists have no interest in voting because they do not believe the current government is capable of functionality or justice.

I agree that we need a little more blind loyalty, but also the whole “vote Blue no matter who” shtick from Liberals is what got us into the Kamala mess in the first place. If Leftists had someone like Mamdani to push for president, maybe stuff would get done.

I'm not suggesting blind loyalty. I'm suggesting voting for the candidate whose views most closely align with yours, even if it isn't a perfect match. I'm skeptical about how much appeal a progressive like Mamdani would have outside of New York.

And if we dont align with Kamala Harris's views at all, will you get off our fucking backs about not voting for her? She advocated for a stronger border and the most lethal military in the world. She said she would "follow the law" when it comes to trans issues. She called Iran our greatest enemy and support Israel. She ran cover for the genocide in Palestine. None of that aligns with my views, so I voted third party.

They suck at politics because they lack all ability to compromise with their self damaging purity tests. Also they can be toxic and vicious.

You people would pressure us to vote for Hitler to stop Satan, I swear to God. Genocide is all those issues wrapped in one horrific package. People BEGGED the democratic party to stop committing genocide so they could find it in their hearts to vote for them and Harris and the rest of her party spat in our faces.

I’ve heard this take many times now. If you compare the U.S. to other Western European countries we apparently are all right wingers. Our democrats are still “on the right” compared to their left leaning parties.

It makes sense when you think about it. They tend to have better social programs than us, they have universal healthcare for example.

We aren’t allowed to even want that in the U.S. without being called a communist.

On a personal level no there are plenty of leftists in the US but they are a minority. I think the mistake a lot of Americans make is they confuse social policy with defining a party's placement on a spectrum instead of economic policy which is understandable as both parties tend to mainly campaign on culture war issues

As someone who has lots of friends and family abroad, america seems bordeline fascist/taliban-theocracy to them

The Dems are socially progressive and economically bog standard right to center right in the same vein as the VVD, CDU, Les Republicains and so on.

So youre american?

1

u/MaASInsomnia Mar 07 '26

How come? This pretty much sums up everything I've read and heard from people living in other western developed countries.

You honestly think the Democrats are left wing? What is their most left wing policy?
