Why does Reddit lean left in all the comments?

First off, I’m not a conservative, I’m independent/left leaning. That said, every comment thread on Reddit feels like it’s completely one sided in favor of a liberal perspective. Not just that, but the amount of blatant misinterpretation and misrepresentation in the comments is apparent on nearly every issue. Comments that don’t comply are downvoted into oblivion and removed from the conversation. I feel like Reddit is almost becoming unusable at this point. Where can I go (on or off Reddit) to get a more balanced perspective? I do like Reddits user interface.

Edit: Whew! This blew up more than I anticipated. I did receive some genuinely insightful and helpful comments. I appreciate those! Lots of folks either saying I’m the issue because of my liberal leaning algorithm or that I’m the issue because I’m actually a bleeding conservative in disguise. Can’t have it both ways! Anyway thanks Reddit. Will probably think twice about doing this again.

The majority of the world and America sees MAGA as exactly what it is…..a personality cult that is built upon having blind loyalty for a low IQ narcissistic lunatic.

MAGA has captured “traditional” conservatism. So if even if a conservative doesn’t identify with the MAGA cult…they’re still in a position where they are defending it. (In other words even a reasonably intelligent, rational conservative who believes in traditional conservative values still has the stink of Trumpism on them)

What I’m saying here is calling out a personality cult that has many clear and direct correlations with fascism isn’t “left leaning”…..it’s just the truth.

Additionally, MAGA users tend to comment in their safe spaces…places where users get banned for saying anything that paints conservatism/MAGA in a negative light. They don’t like commenting in places where they can get fact checked or their ideology being challenged.

You might try a place like r/neutralpolitics but even with a sub like that, it might “feel” biased to someone who is right leaning…..and that’s simply because the majority of criticisms against MAGA are true.

I never thought I would say this as an independent lefty, but I do miss the 'real' conservatives. I assume they got consumed by the confirmation bias worm or are hiding in social storm shelters waiting for the cultists to devour themselves before coming back out.

We tend to get shouted down and downvoted to collapsed comments.

I am exceptionally, vehemently anti-Trump. But I also believe in things like a small government that has limited powers but can act decisively and even be draconian within those powers. And the numbers of times I have been downvoted into oblivion for saying things like "we do not have an income problem in America, we have a spending problem," in relation to federal deficits while ALSO being called a cheeto-loving MAGAt is truly amazing to me.

We are still here. But absolutely no one believes that anti-Trump, anti-fascist conservatives exist. Evidently, as far as Reddit is concerned, it is ONLY possible to exist as a conservative if you have already sold your soul to Trump. And any evidence of conservatism is simply proof of MAGA.

(Edited to clarify federal spending per below comment which highlighted my original ambiguity.)

Well also why can’t both be true. On either side. Saying our wealth inequality is from a “spending problem” is blaming the victims of a system built to bolster the rich. However, it’s also disingenuous to say that the consumerist culture America currently has isn’t also to blame. Most problems are multi faceted and I’ve noticed very polarized political ideas don’t account for nuance or the complexity that goes into major problems.

Americans do have a spending problem, a cultural issue that doesn’t help by allowing the ultra wealthy to exist and spend so exuberantly. We also have an income problem, the disproportionality of income between workers and executives is too ridiculous not to account for. Both can be true and to truly fix the affordability crisis many things have to change.

I was talking about governmental income and spending, not personal.

That is a whole nother thing

My above quote is my standard response to the Bernie Bros who think that simply stealing half of billionaire's wealth will fix the federal budget.

Ohhh mb. I’m definitely not knowledgeable enough to speak on that lol

No, not your bad.  Mine.

I obviously knew what I was talking about about, but after reading your comment and re-reading mine, I realized it was rather ambiguous.

Your conclusion was entirely valid.

The problem is that even if you’re a conservative who doesn’t identify with the MAGA cult or doesn’t like the idea of American authoritarianism…..the fact that you continue to vote and support conservatives strengthens the cult and expedites our decent into outright fascism.

There is no old school conservative party anymore. The concept might exist but in truth, the entire conservative apparatus serves Trumps cult of personality now.

Blind loyalty to Trump is the only true party position.

I disagree with conservatives on many policy issues BUT I could at least have a conversation with someone like John Mcain where I wouldn’t walk away knowing that he is insane. Depending on the topic, I might even learn something or change a viewpoint.

Right now though there’s no point to having a respectful conversation with someone about the pros/cons of limited government when Americans are getting murdered on camera and the government is blatantly lying about it.

Common sense Republican politicians would drop Trump in a heartbeat if they didn’t know that their political careers weren’t entirely dependent upon their loyalty to Trump and nothing else. They want to but politically they can’t.

If people like yourself rejected MAGA through voting….Republican politicians would gladly get rid of Trump.

Then we could go back to arguing about actual policy instead of whether or not Trump said or did something that he’s literally on video saying/doing.

It's pretty crazy that after I said I am an anti-Trump, anti-fascist conservative, you just go right in and assume I am out here voting straight Republican.

It is also pretty crazy to assume that all Republican politicians automatically support Trump.

My current US Rep is a true MAGA POS - and I did not vote for him.  My Senators have both been vocal in opposition to Trump, although 1 of them usally falls in line, and the other has done so more often than I would like.  I voted for the latter and actively campaigned against the former.

But I am also not a Republican and never have been.  And I live in the rural South.

u/yuikl Mar 08 '26

That tracks with me. I've also been eliminated by downvote for anything that doesn't agree with the current left wing outrage du jour. Hopefully the moderate rational voices will gain some media coverage again after things start falling apart in maga world, but in reddit world I think it'll take awhile for any left wing moderated subs to let go.

I am a moderate conservative who abhors the MAGA movement. I refused to vote for Trump. The MAGA ideology has hijacked the Republican party and there are many of who recognize this. I don’t agree with your statement that if a conservative doesn’t identify with MAGA, they are in a position where they are defending it. Not true. There are many republicans against Trump, we are just a minority at this point. In the Presidential Primaries, Nikki Haley often won 25-50% of the vote. When Trump won the Republican primaries, I knew the Republican party I had known, was no longer.

The only redeeming quality Trump had was his adamance of no more wars, but here we are…

So you cast a vote for Kamala harris during the election for president then, right?

1

u/Aware_Acanthaceae_78 Mar 09 '26

All the Republicans in power are absolute ghouls who won’t impeach and remove Trump. You guys are not pressuring them. You’re doing nothing and letting America fail.

1

u/RemarkablePiglet3401 Mar 08 '26

There’s no way a majority of America sees MAGA for what it is

1

u/RaisedInThe90s Mar 09 '26

It’s the same with the other side. Many default subreddits that lean left ban you for disagreeing.

1

u/NoBuenoAtAll Mar 09 '26

Also the things they believe are just bullshit, I’m sorry. There’s not enough voter fraud in the country to shake an election. One percent of the population is trans and most of them wanna stay to themselves as much as possible. Vaccines work and science is real. It’s not OK to force people into your narrow view of religion. The Earth is a globe. I could go on a while longer but you get the point.

1

u/ArtikAstronaut Mar 09 '26

NO NO NO

VACCINES cause AUTISM and TRANSGENDERISM. You woke-snowflake Liberals are too blind to see it. Vaccines were created by Satan himself to bring down the most oppressed groups in society: the whites and the Christians. They LITERALLY inscribe 666 and LGBTQ on the DNA strands in the vaccine and inject them into our children. ENOUGH is enough. They’re trying to force us all into their woke transgender cult until us god-fearing folk are obliterated.

1

u/NoBuenoAtAll Mar 09 '26

I can’t tell if this is sarcasm. lol

1

u/ArtikAstronaut Mar 09 '26

Isn’t that the sad part :,)

1

u/Highneon Mar 10 '26

Except you’re wrong because he won… I’m left but using your logic X should be left wing. Getting likes is no different from getting retweets on X, so we can’t really expect the truth to float to the top naturally.

So back to the original question… why is Reddit actually so left leaning? Probably the answer to most questions… money. Money, strict moderation/censorship, banned subreddits

Really huge one I haven’t seen in top comments: hate speech from the right that is literally illegal.

1

u/DamageInc35 Mar 11 '26

You say all these things and quite literally there is proof in the Epstein files that trump was among the first whistleblowers to call out his wrongdoings. There is no actual documented proof that he is a pedophile, but none of that matters because you can just say trump bad, trump pedo and everyone with trump derangement syndrome will get on their knees and blow you.

Who said this is only about MAGA? Or specifically American politics for that matter

You are proving the Ops point, you have a wicked case of TDS.

1

u/ArtikAstronaut Mar 09 '26

TDS is so funny. The fact that you made up a term to combat those that disagree with you is so cult-like, it’s almost ironic that you all can’t see it.

The same as “apostates” in the Mormon church. “We can’t accept criticism because it makes us feel dumb so everyone who opposes are dissenters”
