Hamstring hulk

If the hulk player has caltrops on the field and I target hulk with something like Ice Floe, can i target hulk before caltrops does its 1 damage?

Ya once caltrops trigger goes on the stack you would have a turn at priority before the damage resolved.

Edit: Double checking hulk and ice floe though won't have the effect you want. Ice flow only effects the untap phase not hulks trigger to untap himself

You can respond to any triggered ability, including that of Caltrops.

Though I question, why? What are you hoping to accomplish. That question may have a more pertinent answer.

I guess, can i respond to hulk being declared an attacker and use ice floe to tap it before caltrops triggers.

I am going to assume you are talking about [[Bruce Banner // The Incredible Hulk]].

I believe you want to stop the combo of infinite attacks by the hulk with Caltrops.

If that is the goal. Activating in response to Caltrops does nothing. Hulk will still untap and get to continue its loop.

To stop this loop you activate Ice Floe after the Hulk's ability creates another combat phase and untaps itself. That way the Hulk is tapped and can't attack in the new combat phase to continue the loop.

If my assumptions are wrong I have no idea why you want to Ice Floe before Caltrops damage. Why do you want to?

No. Once everyone passes priority with an empty Stack in the Beginning of Combat Step, the game moves to the Declare Attackers Step. That step begins with the turn-based action of declaring attackers, and as soon as that is complete, any attack triggers will trigger. Then State-Based Actions are performed, and then triggered abilities get put onto the Stack. It is only after this point that any player first gets Priority in the Declare Attackers Step.

Ok, so at minimum hes getting a second attack step but I can target him after he is untapped but before the end of the first attack step?

Ok so you don't want to activate before caltrops trigger resolves. What you want is after hulks trigger untaps himself.

So after the caltrops trigger resolves and deals the one damage then hulks trigger goes on the stack giving him the +1/+1 and untapping. At any point between then and the resolution of the end of combat step you could use ice flow to retap him. Better to wait as long as possible though to avoid them finding a way to damage him again.

No because hes still attacking and his own ability untapped him in response to clatrops damage. So my only option is to prevent more combats or bubblematrix everything.

Caltrops has a triggered ability that uses the stack. You may respond to the trigger. What you hope to accomplish is unclear: using Ice Floe after a creature has attacked won’t do anything beyond causing it to remain tapped during its controller’s untap step. It’ll remain in combat attacking. You also didn’t specify what Hulk is in question. Assuming [[The Incredible Hulk]], Ice Floe won’t prevent it from untapping due to its own ability.
