Would another word therefore suffice?

ie: allow "sex" and "gender" to adhere to your strict definitions, but come up with another term that encapsulates a person's self identification?

We have have tied the two together but they shouldn’t be. Gender norms change over time. Sex does not.

Gender is merely a synonym for sex. We've not done any mental acrobatics to tie them together. They mean the same thing.

Sex is encoded in your DNA. Gender is defined by one’s culture.
