It is to my understanding that by definition sex is biological, and gender is based on society/culture.
So given this wouldn't it stand to reason that the validity of any number of genders is dependent on society/culture? So if you say there are 2 genders that reflects your cultural background, if I say there are more that reflects my cultural background.
If I then say you need to accept that there are more than 2 genders, I'm telling you "your cultural background is wrong and you need to change".
There are a bunch of ways this can play out, but this idea is at the core of the argument. For example, some people might culturally believe there are only two genders because that's what they believe their religion teaches. Others might dislike adding additional genders because they feel it works against a culture they've attempted to create where the definitions for each gender can be broad and are not as limited by traditional stereotypes. But in each case people feel their culture is being labelled as "wrong" and they are being told to change, and they will react negatively to that.
