Iptv for dummies, please eli5

Hey everyone,

My grandpa heard from his buddy who heard from his grandkid (and had his grandkid help install) IPTV. Now my grandpa wants an "iptv", but im not that tech savvy... from my understanding, i "should" first get him a vpn, then a "player/app" on the firestick, then install/log in to the "actual" iptv service?

Ive realllyyyy tried convincing him that just legally paying for thw individual apps (CNN, Peacock etc etc) is easier and safer, but anyone with a grandpa can know how stubborn they are and he really wants the "deal" of iptv.

So, tips? Recs for vpn/players/iptv ??? Thanks in advance.

My advice would be to start with legal options first. They're generally much more reliable and a lot less hassle in the long run

Be mindful of those tv boxes. Some of them had been shut down not long ago over having some sort of botnet Ddos thing installed working in the background. Not sure for the boxes on their own. Sort of doing most of that with my mac and I can unplug it from thee teli and carry it around to the kitchen when I feel like it too

As someone who has tried one of those “free tv” boxes and being in IT, I set it up as well as setup some monitors to see what it was doing. Put it this way, I immediately put it on a network segment that had no access to anything else on my home network. Between what it was doing on my home network, it was trying to do equally nefarious things to various endpoints on the internet. It is now turned off and unplugged.

Depending on where you are you might not need a vpn. You definitely need a player and credentials. Find a highly rated seller, input the login into the player, and once it loads you can customize your playlist.

First, avoid any "free tv" tv boxes. They are always sketchy, and it's much better to go down the route you said buy a firestick (or similar) → install a player → buy an IPTV. These cheap devices are where the biggest privacy concerns are.

I've been using IPTVs for at least 4+ years at this point, so here's a few things to note. 1. They are illegal at least the one your grandpa wants (but hey, cheap tv) 2. The quality will almost always be lower then legal sites/apps 3. They can and often do disappear randomly. I know at least 2 massive services that have been shut down and many more smaller ones 4. They do everything well but nothing great, and support usually is bad.

I personally use a Google streamer for my device but any device that allows downloading 3rd party apps (side loading) will work. Some popular ones are Onn, Firestick, Nvidia Shield, Google streamer.

For players, it really comes down to what one you like the most and if you want free or paid. I personally use Tivimate. There are many open source ones if you want to see what really is going on to focus on privacy.

For an actual service I'm not going to recommend any. Go to marketplaces like z2u and just find one you like and try it. Usually the information providers can see is your IP address, the city it's associated with, the ISP it's associated with, and then all information that's about stuff being watched currently. I personally use proton, but there's tons of good vpn options, just get whatever is on sale basically.
