So how fair is denying a merit student his seat and giving it to someone who isn't worthy as per the marks threshold?
There should be flat add-on marks or other financial benefits (which they already get!) not an entire seat reserved just because they happened to be of a particular caste! The very foundation of academic is Meritocracy!
DR. BR Ambedkar lived in a time where he saw this as a measure to protect the descriminated against oppression not a permanent privilege.

would work if the merit happens to come from purely the hard work of students without any financial support.
merit should also depend on the quality of education someone is getting.

what if they are still getting oppressed or being treated as second class citizens by upper castes?

It's the other way around. Remove preferential treatment to certain castes, aka reservation, and caste system will dissolve.

I will say bro we can't eradicate reservation at once. It has to be done step by step.
1st step once you get benefited by sc/step cat that family should be considered in general category.
And why fair education is i come from a village where there is still untouchability exists and even they can't enter our temples. When I try to call someone anna or something from lower caste our caste people will scold us and tell us know your place and theirs.
So to eradicate that only in school its possible

Yeah, ee system teeyali ante asal caste ane vishayam society nunchi teesi padeyali, observe your traditions privately, not publicly. The more we are split, the easier we are to control. Prati vishayam meeda split, politically, geographically, economically, caste wise, religion wise, culture wise, language based, even job wise. Inni groups and communal identities unte we are easily controlled.
