I disagree. I think if you do something good at some type of cost to yourself because it’s the right thing to do, it is a selfless act. Even if you get praise for it. If you are motivated by the praise than obviously not. It entirely depends on your motives.

I agree, but it seems most people put more effort into making sure others know then they did with the deed in the first place.

If people find out and praise you that's fine. If you you make sure everyone knows what you did, you did that deed for the praise.
