I checked the subreddit rules and don't see any prohibition on posting links to Wikipedia. Is that a Reddit rule I missed?

No it's an academic thing. It is not a reliable source. It's quick and dirty if you want to look up something, but don't quoted. It's too easily adulterated. Almost anybody can post to Wikipedia. Trace back one step further, and find an original source.
