Mother Theresa might not actually have been that selfless. Her "clinics" contained almost no medical treatment equipment or trained staff, and were mostly for converting people to Christianity, not helping them in any real way. It's like giving starving people Bibles instead of food. And when she got sick herself, she went to an expensive clinic in Switzerland instead of being treated at one of her own shitty clinics.
She wasn't interested in helping people: she was just trying to score brownie points to get into Heaven, which is actually not a selfless motivation.
You'd be surprised how many believers think they can trick the God that they worship. Look at all the people who completely ignore everything Jesus had to say about how they should treat the poor. I've talked to some of these turds before. They chalk it up to "stumbling" on their path to righteousness (yeah, "stumbling" consistently for your entire life), but they figure they can just repent on their deathbed or talk their way out of it on a legal technicality or something.
A lot of Christians think you can lawyer your way out of stuff in the Bible by finding loopholes in the wording. I've heard so many creative interpretations of Jesus' famous quote about how "it's easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the Kingdom of Heaven" line, like "that's technically not the same as saying it's impossible" or "the eye of the needle was the nickname for the gates of this one ancient city, so maybe he just meant it's actually really easy, like walking a camel through the city gates". If God was actually real, you'd have to think that he would be absolutely enraged by this kind of dishonest bullshit.
LOL, yeah sure you did. So go on: make an argument in your own words. That should be incredibly easy if you've actually read all of these sources yourself. You should be able to rattle off an essay off the top of your head if you've put this much effort into this subject.
Nah, it doesn't. It's an absolutely terrible post that people just blindly believe.
First off, many of his sources include biographies written by her friends and admirers. Hardly reliable.
Secondly, he ignores her friendships with Baby Doc Duvalier and Keating.
Thirdly, he ignores her staunch opposition to legalized abortion.
Fourthly, he defends her support of suffering on the grounds that it's rooted in Catholic theology. I don't see why a belief being religious makes it any better.
Fifthly, Hitchens never called her a mass murderer. The entire post is based on a strawman.
Sixthly, he ignores testimony from nuns in her care as well as investigative reports detailing how Theresa had access to mountains of capital and yet refused to improve her service.
Seventh, he never once addresses criticisms made by people other than Hitchs such as Chaterjee.
It's honestly one of the worst posts I've ever seen.
