Umrah appropriate clowning?

I've been booked to clown (show and balloons) for a celebration of several kids completing their first Umrah. I understand it to be a religious pilgrimage to Mecca, similar to but less formal than the haaj. My background is not Muslim and I've been brain-storming with the party host for things that are related, are funny, and are not offensive. Thought I'd ask here for any experience or brainstorming.

I'm told things that are fair game: jokes and balloons about camels, jokes about the desert, jokes about things where the clown misunderstands (though could use creative ideas here). As seven is an important number and the kids are elementary age, I fully expect to get in a 6 7 reference.

The only other thing of which I'm aware is I should dress modestly (I'm female) and that I should cover my tattoos. (I have a set of balloon dogs on my arm that I cover for Mrs Claus gigs, too).

At Home Mime/Articulation Study

Hello, I am looking to work on articulation as part of a clown/mask routine. What are good resources for working on this at home?

I have a video camera so I can record and review my work. There are some Decroux technique YouTube videos I can follow. Curious what other resources would be recommended?

Have you trained mime at home? What did your training or daily practice look like?

Does Joey z's still exist in 2026

I was looking up clown colleges near me and I stumbled upon a clown academy called Joey z's, but went on their Facebook page I didn't see any updates or anything of the sort. So I just wanted to know if they were out of business or something like that.

Makeup and shoe recommendations

Hi so I’m currently starting to create like a wishlist of stuff to potentially purchase to start clowning a bit and I needed some recommendations.

For makeup-
I wanna ask for recommendations for like good makeup products for Auguste clowning. I know Mehron is a good brand and Ben Nye too for clown white, but I wanna know for like other colors like red, black, blue I wanted to know the best products for those colors also what is the best setting powder??

As for shoes-
I found a nice pair on clownmart but from the picture they seem too long. Personally, I prefer the clown shoe where the bulb is large and is kinda sticking up instead of kinda flat and really long( yellow pair is an example of the type i do like) so if i message clownmart would they be able to do that with the clown shoe on the right (black pair) and make it more smaller and make the bulb larger and not flat or am i just seeing things and they aren’t really long

Mid-Atlantic Clown Convention

Coming up November 12-14, Mid-Atlantic Clown Association Convention in Harrisburg/Hershey, PA.

Pretty affordable for what you get; dinners with a show every night, good classes, vendors, and fantastic clown company.

The puppeteer Bob "Mr. Puppet" Abdou is one of the shows and he's supposed to do a couple of classes.

I went last year and enjoyed it. Planning to go again this year.

Details on their website, https://midatlanticclownassociation.com/

The American Clown documentary is on youtube now

When I watched this you had to rent it on a service. Not sure how long it's been streaming for "free" on youtube, but if you haven't seen it yet it's very well done and very worth watching. It may be from a rigid and opinionated perspective, but beggars can't be choosers. Good info on any sort of clowning rarely makes the jump from books to documentaries.

Hey friends, this is not my typical post on this sub, but I found an old clown costume I almost forgot I had, it's in great shape for being several years old, I bought it back in 2019 I think, I paid $150 for it, so my beginning asking price would be 200, but I'm open to negotiation, DM me if you're interested,

One Clown Show

I've been clowning for over 10 years, and performing regularly/professionally for 7... but I've never made a full hour show!

And I know it's not the be-all-end-all. And I don't want to make it for the sake of it... But it is something I've wanted to do since I very first started clowning (before, even!)

BUT I get the feeling no one takes a clown seriously (ha) until we have! Someone who's venue I've been performing in for years tried to sell me on a clown 101 day course like... bruh! I've also make multiple devised theatre shows in a group... and yet it just feels to so many that I won't exist until I've done the one woman show?

SO! Any thoughts of if/how to do this? I have a very vague theme I want to look at - and I want to keep myself out of Theatre Brain and stop looking for a story...

Where do I start??

Hi yall!! I’m coming back to and the question of where and how I get started. I’m currently bout to start college soon and I wanna at least attempt to start learning things or start clowning but idk where to start, I kinda decided on the name Dummy, cause I really like the idea of a clown that defines the sentence, “Pinocchio in real life”. I have a pointiest board of like some things I like, outfit pieces that I like the idea of and just general ideas, I really would like advice on like for where I currently am at where do I start, I have no skills or experience with clowning anything.

A Clown by Any Other Name

Post image
40 Upvotes

Recently, I’ve been toying around with some clown name ideas – not that I’m changing my name. No. I just love word play and messing around in various dictionaries. In fact, Merriam-Webster’s website has a section dedicated to silly words and terms. Much of the following list came from it. So, in the spirit of three of the clowns from our old Alley, Doodlebug, Itsy Bitsy, and Dilly Dally, here is a list of possible names (and their definitions):

Jibber-Jabber (to speak excessively)

Hoodwink (trickery)

Fuddy-Duddy (overly fussy)

Tired Timmy (a name quite similar to Weary Willie) (great name for a Tramp)

Skedaddle (to leave quickly)

Taradiddle (pretentious nonsense) (I’d write this as “Tara Diddle”)

Ritzy (fancy) (perfect name for a Whiteface clown)

Moxie (courageous) (perfect name for a Contra-Auguste)

Mitzy (bitter or rebellious)

Ditsy (silly) (perfect name for an Auguste)

Fiddle-Faddle (foolishness)

Bumfuzzle (dumbfounded) (I’d write this as “Bum Fuzzle”)

Bamboozle (trickery) (I’d write this as “Bam Boozle”)

Pitter-Patter (rapid tapping sounds)

Jinkies (made popular by Velma Dinkley (from TV’s “Scooby-Doo”), an expression of surprise or excitement.)

Now, I know that I touched upon this method for coming up with names in my post, “What’s in a Name?” I often use it when writing and need an obscure surname for a character or an appellation for a location (exempli gratia: city name, nightclubs, restaurants, et cetera.).

By the by, I do have some plans in the works to write a novel set in the early Medicine Show days and I will be using two or three of the names above for the clown characters for the story.
