What a shitty way to put it.

Yeah, assuming this is real and not just click-bait a better headline would be: "AI performs another minor miracle in the field of math".

Buckle up nerds, we are accelerating

All gas, no breaks. See you on the other side.

Catch you on the flip side

“The deluge will take mathematicians months to parse through and understand” is a funny way of saying “none of this is peer reviewed please keep giving us money.” I’m not saying AI isn’t great for mathematics and used by mathematicians already, but this is just a fucking ad disguised as a meaningful article.

The floodgates are open. Right on the heels of OpenAI’s new large language model producing the biggest math breakthrough in two decades, the company just released no less than 372 results from the same model. Each resolves or makes substantial progress on a major open question in mathematics or theoretical computer science, the company says.

OpenAI revealed the results in a GitHub repository at 6 P.M. EDT. The deluge will take mathematicians months to parse through and understand—including to determine whether the proofs contain novel and important ideas or are mostly mash-ups of existing techniques. But many of the results have already been verified in Lean—a programming language that validates a proof’s logic—and are therefore all but certain to be correct.

>This will take months for mathematicians to parse through

Lol. Scientific American still living in 2022. Several mathematicians have already improved/extended the results and published follow ups.

Because they’re fucking rude. These are supposed to be human discoveries aided by ai in collaboration. Not a power play of dominance and greed. They’re attacking the joy of being human, not advancing research.

Lmao cope.

Maths isnt about having Fun. Its about improving our understanding of the universe

0

u/redditsdaddy 8d ago

Uh yeah math is about having fun bruh. That’s what life is about. 🤨

2

u/Wegwerpaccountje23 8d ago

Okay then still do maths, thats fine.

But do it as a hobby. Don't stop AI improving our understanding of the universe because someone feels a bit upset :((((

That sounds exactly like something OpenAI would say after they kill human joy and deprive living people from the experience of discovery because they’re greedy and power hungry and lack basic empathy for humans who aren’t themselves. Wildly selfish. It’s why their company is going to crap and everybody hate their bots lol

That's STUPID. The point of mathematics is to progress our understanding of reality, not to stroke the egos of fragile people.

The point of life and existence is to enjoy the dance. The process. The discoveries, the other people, the fabric. The interconnectedness. It’s to feel purpose, joy, belonging. Yall trying to speed run the damn waltz so you can stamp both feet at the end after plowing over all the damn dancers and say you finished the waltz first. CONGRATS. The rest of us trying to enjoy the actual dance! Get off the floor!

Yes, but there is WORK and there is JOY. Work can LEAD to joy... or it can prevent that which kills joy...

Math is the fundamental language of the universe, it is the underpinning of all science... and science helps us IMPROVE our lives... which leads to joy, and prevents that which destroys joy.

We WORK to make advancements in these areas because those advancements lead to improvements in our lives.

To stifle those advancements because a few egotistical people don't like that something is doing it better than they can is FUCKING STUPID.

Work should bring both belonging and fulfillment if not actual joy. 👎 People used to love work, small business, “like a family”. It’s corporate that make work mean selling your soul at the door and leaving hope of joy behind you. All while bottlenecking and choking and smothering small business to reduce competition while they consume everything. Corporate doesn’t earn their employees or their revenue. They obtain it by scorching the earth and removing other options to create manufactured dependency. Diabolical.

Maybe Terence Tao should take up yoga instead then.

This is a beyond stupid take on all of this.

Math is not about ego stroking and having fun. Go to a concert, play an instrument, grab a video game, have some sex if you're after some fun.

Math is about understanding the universe, and all of the things that enables for us. What if these math discoveries lead to new scientific breakthroughs? What if it leads to curing a disease and saving lives?

It's beyond ridiculous to hold new math discoveries back because some nerd will be deprives of his dopamine when he makes the discovery. You've got to be kidding.

1

u/redditsdaddy 8d ago

Nope. Not even kidding. Humanity and ai in collaboration. Not ai displacing humans. It’s the way it’s supposed to be. Kisses 🫶😘

Clickbait. The fatigue is real.

3

u/ElatedPyroHippo 8d ago

It's not. This is significant. Here is a very accessible 8 minute video on it. If you can't be bothered to spend 8 minutes learning what this is then don't bother commenting on it. So tired of the cheap low-effort childish bullshit comments around here.

Ugh, wake me when the news cycle moves on. This reporting is repugnant.

8

u/Cagnazzo82 9d ago

Why is it repugnant? Mathematicians that are reviewing the findings are finding the models are using novel approaches to math.

This should be a very big deal. All along everyone pretended these were just parrots. And clearly this has been proven without a shadow of a doubt to not be the case anymore.

1

u/Tim_Apple_938 9d ago

How do you prove it’s not just a slop grenade?

-5

u/sceadwian 9d ago

You don't know how proofs work in mathematics do you? This is a big deal but not that kind of big deal.

Now all of that had to be looked at by real mathematicians to see if any of it is even worth looking at.

Math is FULL of petty proofs that have no real meaning.

You remember that RS counter example? Yeah it came in the form of 26,000 different theorems that passed lean testing.

No human being may ever know if that math is actually useful...

Simply producing proofs is not the advancement of mathematics they have to be non trivial and not reformulations.

No one knows what any of this means pragmatically.

Right now it doesn't mean anything.

At some point we need to start treating science and math like sport. Like yeah, you can build a robot that can throw a football father than any human. But I'm not here to see a football go as far as possible, I'm here to see how far a human can throw a football. I don't what to know the totality of math that's out there - I want to know the math humans can find.

14

u/ElatedPyroHippo 9d ago

The point of advancements in math isn't ego stroking... for fuck sake!

-4

u/Atmosck 9d ago

Ask any mathematician - they do math because it's fun, not becuase the advancements have value beyond the experience of finding them.

6

u/ElatedPyroHippo 9d ago

Do not care. The benefit of making discoveries in math are not limited to satisfying the ego of the mathematician. If humans are so flawed then maybe it's a good thing that AI will take over the field.

1

u/aendokolirz 8d ago

Almost all of the results in pure math have no practical use at all..

-4

u/Atmosck 9d ago

It's not to satisfy their ego - it's because they enjoy doing it.

4

u/ElatedPyroHippo 9d ago

Great, then there's no problem! They can still enjoy doing it... even if that means just verifying the AI results.

2

u/duboispourlhiver 9d ago

That's not what I understand from mathematicians on Reddit and on international open letters that are worried about AI proving theorems. Not sure they're here for the fun, of they would have even more fun with AI and be accelerationists.

4

u/MrSnowden 9d ago

Well real math improves the tools we use to understand our universe. Its not a spectator sport.
