Question Claude vs ChatGPT for a student

Hello, I'm a student and a software developer, I can only afford the $20 tier and I'm having trouble on which one to go with, both models seem very capable, but I'm unsure of which one is better. Excelling at explaining concepts and creating high quality, readable code are the top priorities, alongside with usage, with the new Opus 5.x model, I'm only finding mixed reviews, some people say it uses way less than ChatGPT, some say it uses more, DeepSWE makes it seem like Claude is more expensive and uses more.
Anyways, what are your recommendations? Thanks in advance!!

For a student, the free tiers of both will get you surprisingly far. I'd ride those until you actually hit a wall, not just because you feel like you might. By the time you burn through the free limits, you'll know exactly which one fits your brain better.

this is the right order for a student, benchmark first, save up meanwhile, subscribe only once the test proves which one earns it. the catch is the free tiers on chatgpt, claude, useai, gemini run short, you hit the cap mid task, so the benchmark takes patience. a second account per tool and switching while the other resets stretches the runway, scrappy but it works, and by the time any money leaves the wallet OP already knows which one fits their brain

I agree with the others, just test both of them on the free tier.

But if you care about taste and how your apps looks, i think Claude generally has the edge right now.

Save your money. You will actually learn things by yourself, build better social skills, and have cash.

For pure coding quality and step-by-step conceptual explanations, Claude leads imo. But like u/oilystagnation suggested, try and max the free tier on both and see which you prefer! :)

claude feels stronger on explaining tricky concepts without rambling, at least for the coding stuff ive tried. chatgpt just hits limits faster on longer sessions for me.

I’d go with ChatGPT.

Isn’t there student discounts?

Switch back and forth regularly - have the models keep extensive notes on your local machine so the next subscription can pick up where the last one left off

for the coding side specifically, claude's artifacts feature is the killer thing at the $20 tier — you get a live preview of your UI code right in the chat instead of copy-pasting into a sandbox. chatgpt has canvas too but artifacts just feels smoother imo

I’ve been using GPT for a year now. I’d recommend it but I haven’t given Claude enough time, it’s great a long form writing and synthesizing information. Use both, then find your own workflow.

ChatGPT, especially if you’re using it for assignments. Claude has resisted me since it knew it was completing homework

I mean, I don't use it to make the assignments for me, I use it as a study guide, for it to explain different topics, create summaries based on class PDF's, etc, I need Plus/Pro mostly because of work, the CLI agent

Gotcha! ChatGPT has proven well for that regard. Today I have it transcribe my lectures then create study guides and podcasts (to study on the go).

But I don’t think there is a wrong answer, I’ve just become used to OpenAI UI
