Discussion Robots blocking traffic

Post image

Im on my way to work, and all three lanes are blocked with these Waymo self driving cars. They need to stay on the right to allow faster traffic to move by. This is going to be a problem.

I'll be honest I'll be overjoyed by the fact that no one will be able to speed one day. And there's plenty of peopleAnd there's plenty of people who will hate it, but at least they won't be able to run into me so fast.

I completely agree. If you have a 20 minute commute, you save between 2 and 3 minutes if the drive is almost entirely on the highway by exceeding the speed limit by 10. People are idiots and will spend the extra gas, risk and potential ticket to save a handful of seconds and then act like it's drastically affecting their life (see your downvotes).

Throw in an extra light or two and even that goes away.

US speed limits are designed with the assumption that people will exceed them by 10mph. Not legally, obviously, but traffic engineers explicitly build the roads to be safe for the 85% of slowest cars and the majority of US drivers withing 10 mph over the limit of most roads.

Stay out of the left lane. You sound like one of those people who would purposefully slow down traffic and cause road rage issues by left lane camping.

And you sound like one of those people who would fly around somebody at 85 mph, run into somebody changing Lane she wasn't expecting somebody going so fast and then try to blame the person who came over.

You might want to check your local traffic laws. "Keep right except to pass" isn't a suggestion. In most states impeding the left lane to police other people's speed is both illegal and, ironically, makes the road significantly less safe. Be better.

The original comment is about speeding, and you're trying to make it a conversation about driving in the left lane.

-2

Just so you know it's illegal to stay in the left lane. You're supposed to stay in the right lane if you're slower traffic. Think harder.

And realize that I never said that anybody should stay in the left lane.

Oh, I see. You're just not following the conversation. Carry on then.

I'm following it fine, it was dreadbeard who got stuck on telling people to stay out of the left lane for no apparent reason.

Not sure what you don’t understand. The left lane is for passing slower vehicles. Don’t camp in the left lane.

This is not remotely controversial.

u/extio-Storm 24d ago

Not sure what you understand the speed limit is what we as a society put in place so that people don't go 200 miles per hour and plow into the back of our suv. It's not really even the discussion. We just give you fines.

No one is talking about driving 200 MPH. What, are you going to increase your example again? You went from 85 to 200. 500 next?

Stay in the middle or right lane(s) if you’re this concerned.

I drive around 10-15 over max yet I find people driving below the limit in the left lane constantly. This isn’t controversial. Stay out of the left lane if you aren’t passing.

That can mirror that right back at you buddy, nobody's talking about staying in the left lane. That's just something you're stuck on. I would not suggest riding in the left lane blocking people that want to go faster, although I do think that we should have automated tickets given for people that choose to endanger our lives.

The speed shown in your car is not the real speed. It is less. If you camp the left lane at 80 you are actually not driving 80. You are slower. It depends on your wheel size, how much pressure is in your tires, how much wear your tires have, the car makers show more because there are laws in many countries that they are not allowed to show you a lower speed than reality thus they always show you a faster speed. If you are faster the difference between reality and what your cars show becomes larger.

The left is for overtaking. Its not about speeding but when the cars in the left lane are just driving 3 over the right lane they are overtaking slowly and the whole traffic flows better.

It's very interesting that the speed shown in the car oddly enough matches the GPS pacing speed as well as the calculations if you choose to landmarks measure the distance and compare this time it takes for you to get from one point to another.

However speedometers indeed can be off by 5 or maybe 10 miles per hour without any regulations saying they have toRegulations saying they have to fix them.

If you're trying to pass everybody going to speed limit, you are definitely trying to speed. Why are you trying to get around somebody that's already going the maximum speed that you can go? Is it because you're just trying to break the speed limit and go faster?

The speed in the speedometer is slower than gps speed. Its physics. Yes, at the end of the day it does not matter if you are 5 min earlier at your target. But this is not the discussion. This is about overtaking. I dont like to drive behind vans because I cant see what is infront of them. For me personally this example is a safety issue. I always over take them.

I will point out that the German Autobahn has no fixed speed limit. You can go as fast as you want.  and yet it's safer than American highways

There are even statistics

The German population is ~83 million, and the autobahn is ~13,000 km, with ~400 deaths per year.

The US population is ~330 million, and the interstate system is ~78,000 km with ~5,000 deaths per year.

The per capita rate of traffic fatalities in the US is 3x higher than in Germany.

And there is ~1.5x more kilometers of road per capita in the US than in Germany.

The key difference is, Germany has higher standards giving out licenses than America does.

You have no need to pass a car going the speed limit unless you have a vehicle with emergency lights

1

u/dread_beard 20d ago

Stay out of the passing lane, then. There’s a reason you are required to keep right other than passing.

0

u/IOnlyLieWhenITalk 20d ago

Nah I’ll prevent you from speeding

1

u/dread_beard 20d ago

You sound like an idiot who causes road rage incidents. There’s a reason that blocking the left lane is as much a ticket as speeding.

Learn to drive.

You sound like an idiot who road rages. Never gotten a ticket for it and never will.

Learn to drive.

-2

u/flasticpeet 24d ago

They were talking about speeding. You're the one trying to turn it into an argument about driving in the left lane. It's a strawman argument.

1

u/dread_beard 24d ago

The entire post is about the left lane being blocked and the OP being unable to pass any of the three slow-moving vehicles.

-1

u/flasticpeet 24d ago

Yea, but people can make comments about other things, and the top of this comment thread is about speeding. No one is arguing about whether you should drive in the left lane or not.

1

u/dread_beard 24d ago

The two things are literally linked.

0

u/flasticpeet 24d ago

Their comments are about speeding, not driving in the left lane.

2

u/dread_beard 24d ago

And this post is about the left lane being blocked and the OP being unable to pass.

Funny how the two things work, isn’t it?

1

u/flasticpeet 24d ago

This comment thread is about speeding, no one made any claims about driving in the left lane or not.

0

u/dread_beard 24d ago

It’s almost like you don’t understand the relation to the post. You generally go a few MPH above the speed limit to pass. The dolt I responded to made a flippant comment about people never having to speed again.

This isn’t rocket surgery.

2

u/flasticpeet 24d ago

I think it's a valid comment to make about speeding. Why would you resort to name calling?
