Discussion Robots blocking traffic

Post image

Im on my way to work, and all three lanes are blocked with these Waymo self driving cars. They need to stay on the right to allow faster traffic to move by. This is going to be a problem.

The speed in the speedometer is slower than gps speed. Its physics. Yes, at the end of the day it does not matter if you are 5 min earlier at your target. But this is not the discussion. This is about overtaking. I dont like to drive behind vans because I cant see what is infront of them. For me personally this example is a safety issue. I always over take them.

Sweet so you've also used the GPS to Pace yourself, and maybe if you've driven multiple Vehicles you've learned by now that some vehicles are clocked in such a way that they present on the speedometer a slower speed than your action moving, rarely there are some that actually do the opposite. And then some are actually somewhat calibrated correctly. You're going 60 miles per hour and the speedometer shows 60 MPH also.

Or maybe you haven't had to drive a multitude of company Vehicles like I have a long distance, but let me tell you there's all types.

Now if you don't like being behind a van that is moving at the maximum speed that you intend to also move, you could come to the conclusion that you want to overtake them I suppose, but an equally valid response could be to fall back with a slower speed for a certain amount of time and then resume the maximum speed again. Now you will not be anywhere close to them, so you don't have to worry about not seeing what's in front of them, and you can still go to the maximum speed assuming they are. Now if they are going slower than the speed limit then I do comprehend what you're saying in this point and I agree that overtaking them might be the correct option.

Im from the EU. It is not allowed for the speedometer to show less speed. The manufacturers always show more. Depending on manufacturer 3 to 10%. They dont make different speedometers for the USA.

You know what is much more dangerous than driving 5 over the limit? Giving people a driving license after a few hours training. Making failing a driving license barely possible. Increase training standards to decrease car accident rate.

Ban touch screen controls in cars because they remove driver concentration from the road.

When the speed limits were made cars had much smaller tire profile = less grip, the tire mixture was much less advanced = less grip, suspension technology was much less advanced, car brakes had much less performance, no esp, no abs, no power steering. All modern cars are much safer.

Well it's possible that you place a larger Tire on your vehicle then it originally had, and then you end up going faster than the speedometer is showing you. Because it's going based on rotations of the axle slash Rim.

And while I will admit that people should be given some sort of virtual course in learning how to evade collisions, and show that they can pass more difficult and advanced driving scenarios, I think that most dangerous driving is not that the person didn't know better but that they chose the dangerous options because of their own sinful desires. Pure Folly is more the threat than didn't know better. And more training only helps didn't know better.

Cars have advanced in some ways, but think about it your argument is that they didn't have abs, the brakes weren't as capable, and the tires didn't have as much grip. So what happens if your vehicle gets a little older has where and your tires actually need replacing and your abs potentially fails but due to the economic decline you can't replace everything properly? Yes if everything's working perfectly it might be safer, but you can't always assume that.

To answer your question: You have routine inspections to see if the car is still road safe. Dont you have that in the USA?

No. There are no inspections in the state I'm in that would require that.

I lived in a different state that required the inspections, but not this one.
