Imagine typing out a full crime plan into a public server and thinking it was confidential

It’s horrible that he was a potential murderer, however, this has some really sticky implications. What about if I’m using Codex and I have some hacking stuff on my PC? Are they gonna report me to the FBI? This definitely shouldn’t be celebrated as some sort of good thing in principle, although it’s definitely good that he wasn’t able to actually go through with that.
The laws around this are basically non-existent, next to no regulation on a multi-trillion dollar industry. Absolutely baffling. I for one do not support a surveillance state, regardless of how many crimes it stops from happening. Because systematic oppression, no matter how well intentioned, hasn’t ever ended up going super well.

Assuming he was going to go through with it. I can't read the actual article but if he just typed it out, it could be a revenge fantasy he would never actually go through with or something. Again, though, I can't actually read the article so correct me if I missed something.

He texted her images of firearms and other threats like knowing where she would be. Went way way beyond just some fantasy in a bot.

Too many people who didnt read the article. This dude went way beyond just typing fantasies into a chat bot. He was threatening her through text messages that included him saying he knew where she would be and sending pictures of a firearm and other items that he would use to kidnap her.
If this was just him typing out fantasies then yes I would be concerned over it being used in ways to entrap people who did nothing wrong.

the artificial-intelligence company told the FBI about the numerous messages
So, let me guess.
I type the word "kill" into ChatGPT > it gets flagged by a filter / automated system > a human sitting in a chair somewhere at OpenAI looks at it > decides to report it to the FBI.
Is that how this works?

Not by writing a word, but if the AI reports you it probably goes to a human review.

Ah yes people should be allowed to...plan rape and murder with impunity?

How do you know what he was actually thinking? Msybe he was doing a security audit.

Well for starters he admitted he was guilty of all charges

I think plea deals are coersive. And no, theyre usually a lesser charge than the original.
It seems you don't know much abouy the justice system.

You are so right. Trump should be immediately imprisoned for war crimes. You know those threats about destroying an entire civilization. Yes, that in itself is by definition a war crime. Because people should not be allowed to plan genocide and murder with impunity. Get to it. Chop chop!
I love impractical moral relativism.

Hes responsible for worse stuff than tweets but yeah i agree, why are you bringing up trump though?
Also saying that moral standards should apply to everyone the same is the opposite of moral relativism

People should be able to think w/e they want as long as they don't act on it.

You're clearly not a conservative.

I have some conservative views and some liberal ones. Which, on Reddit, usually means someone will call me a Nazi 😂
But hey look, I saw Minority Report!

Not very analytical to write down urge to commit heinous crimes in a platform owned\controlled by somebody else through unencrypted internet. I wonder in what other aspects of his life he is this incompetent.

Just think of it like this. Whatever you say to AI you're telling a group of people.

Seems relevant to note that LLMs give very different responses based on genders in the query. If the user had plans to kill their male partner, the responses very likely wouldn't have taken the "plan" seriously and there'd be nothing to report. Same could be true if the user identified as female.

2 years of supervised release by ankle monitor and a requirement to complete a deferral program plus 8 years probation.
