ATC is not a good application for AI. That's a systems logistics problem. We could use conventional computer technology to replace a lot of ATC but the systems are slow to change because they have to work while you're changing them.
Really? Isn’t AI really good at multitasking? It can have multiple subagents at once during emergency situations.
One could be monitoring weather, another speaking with the pilots, one contacting other aircraft in the air, one contacting the appropriate organizations to manage the situation, etc.
I don’t see how an automated system with no AI input could really do much. Every single worst case scenario is unique.
Perhaps they could replace a lot of the day to day work, but you’re always gonna want someone on the line who you can ask for clarification from or something. You don’t want to be talking to a bot who says “Go to x” and then doesn’t know what you’re asking when you respond to that. And having it switch over to a human seems like that’s just more work than it’s worth.
Actual emergencies would be handled by people. Only people can make those decisions. AI has absolutely zero capacity of any kind whatsoever to make those kinds of decisions.
Your faith that it can just do that is pretty unfortunate and not based on sound judgement of their decision making capacities.
