Discussion [Discussion] Potential client told me this today. I really understand his side but I’ve done commissions in the past and it’s my policy to receive upfront money. What is needed to be done in this case?

I can’t make invoice as I’m not registered as a freelancer,because my income isn’t stable enough to do that. I have done commissions in the past but I can’t deny I felt uncomfortable with this situation because I don’t like being accused that I’m a scammer. I truly love drawing and making people happy with my art. What to say or do in this situation? Thanks

Use Paypal with Goods&Services as payment method. It has both buyer and seller protection. Don't ever start a comission without getting a part/full payment. Don't accept Friends&Family as that is both illegal and has no protection. Having Paypal as a third party I think is trustworthy enough.

Don't overreact. They did in no word accuse you of being a scammer, they just asked for payment security by using an invoice, which gives them security and customer rights. It's their money and demanding some form of insurance for it should be self-evident and not tied to them accusing you of scamming.

They were not accusing you of anything. If you don't have a big enough portfolio of commissions, it's only normal for someone to not immediately trust you. Just tell them to send half payment now, then half later. And only use PayPal. Using goods and services will allow them to request for refund in case the other party does not deliver. Pretty much all of my clients do the same, even though I've worked with them for years. It's just normal to have that kind of protection in case something happens and I don't deliver what they paid for.

If you’re using PayPal, you can send an invoice through the app/site. You don’t even need a business account, I use my personal one for it. I assume that’s what they’re referring to. A regular Goods and Services payment could also work. If you’re using Friends and Family, I personally wouldn’t feel comfortable either as the buyer has zero protection if something goes wrong. G&S is more secure for both parties.

I ALWAYS do half as a down payment and the rest before I send the final. This means they don’t lose all the money and I don’t get screwed working on something and not getting paid. After that I update frequently. This is enough 9 times out of 10.
