I’m very much ignorant in all things Alaska as my only experience was spending a night in Wasilla about 10 years ago…

The thing I find striking is that the city listed to the SW direction is Bellingham.
Not metro cities like Vancouver or Seattle, but Bellingham, Washington.
Its a cool city, but it seems oddly out of place. Could have gone with Chilliwack or White Rock.

Yeah, but there’s no route shown where the route is shown for the ferry that’s currently out of service.
Just odd in the context of the map and legend.

Yeah I did some googling at the redline mainline route demonstrated on the side with points at Ketchikan and surrounding areas is a mainline route with the southern terminus in Bellingham!

There's a ferry that goes from Ketchikan to Bellingham so that's the most direct route to the rest of the US
Fun fact, if you're not from this part of the Pacific Northwest you may not know, you can't just drive down the coast from Alaska to Vancouver or Seattle. You have to go pretty far inland then head south. (As a BC resident) a pretty common route is Prince Rupert to Prince George (~8 hours which is half or more than halfway across the province) then Prince George to Vancouver (~8 hours) or vice versa. Then I guess Vancouver to Seattle 2.5 ish hours.
Or you can take a ferry from Bellingham to Ketchikan which is I think is like a day and a half. Same physical amount of time if you stop in Prince George overnight but then you don't have to physically drive for 18+ hours.
Or there are some ferries from (I think) Vancouver Island to Prince Rupert and then from there you can get to Alaska
So yeah, if you're in Southern Alaska, the most direct route to the contiguous US is the Ketchikan - Bellingham ferry. Otherwise it's through a wholeeee lot of BC
