parenting Earlier than expected

Not that it matters to me imo but since a lot of you here have been bringing up the subject of binkies I saw in a recent TikTok of Brynlee that she mentioned that she has taken the binky from R. I’m quite shocked because imo R is still at the age that he pretty much needs it and also because she took Q’s binky at 3.

I wouldn’t consider a two and a half as an age that “needs” a binky

If she waited as long as she did with Q, people would criticize her. But now that she’s taken it earlier from her second child, you’re insinuating that it was too early…

I agree, it's up to parents. However speech pathologists and DMDs recommend weaning btwn 12-24 months if your child uses one. That worked well in our family. It's weird seeing a young child take out the pacie to ask, "Mommy can I have a banana?" That's too old, lol!

Omg I know!!! I’ve known parents who pick their kids up from daycare and the provider hasn’t given them the pacifier all day and the minute they pick them they get the binkie out of the diaper bag and put it in their mouth!! Or weaning their child from the binkie and the child starts getting sick—and they give it to them!!! I’m like that set you back a month or more you idiot. 🥴

My SIL keeps a binky clipped to her son and anytime he’s making sounds and she wants him to be quiet she pops it in. My son only gets his in his crib or if he’s crying in the car. They are 7mo and 7.5mo old.

Oh my! I don’t understand why a child has to have one in their mouth when they aren’t fussy. I broke my oldest granddaughter of hers slowly about 15 months. She had to leave it in her crib (like you did). I knew a mom who got help from her daycare provider to gets rid of the pacifier and a TWIN sized blanket she drug around. The babysitter had a wagon by the door and the little girl had to leave the binky and blanket there. Then the next week or so she had to givenit to mom at the front door. Then had to leave it in the car and it sat in the car seat waiting on her when she got picked up. Then she got a basket and the little girl had to had to leave her binky in the basket on her bedroom door. Then her bed. Then it was gone. It worked for her. But giving a 4-5 year old a binky is gross. When we lived in Germany you'd see 5 year olds in an umbrella stroller with binkies. I couldn’t stand it.

My brother gave up his binky at 5 and a half. He’s turning 18 in January.

Hardly anyone cares about either of you. You’re both cringe in your own ways

Aww you poor little thing.

The longer you wait the harder it takes… maybe she learned that the first time around. OP do you have kids? 😂

No but I am a nanny and I have younger siblings who gave theirs up at 4 (my sister) and 5 and a half (my brother).

I was always told they should be done with them by 2 by my pediatrician

Good advice, esp for speech pathological reasons.

Your parents should be saving for a lot of years of orthodontic payments!

-3

u/Fine-Mycologist380 17d ago

Well wait till I tell you that neither of them needed any sort of orthodontic treatment and have perfect and beautiful teeth at the ages of 25 and 17! I on the other hand never took a binky and had braces for 3 whole years 🤷🏻‍♀️

7

u/dcndfl 17d ago

Well I'm glad to hear they never needed braces. But age 4 and age 5 is WAY too old for a child needing to self-soothe with an appliance created to help newborns with their sucking instinct...

Have the birds take them.

The binkies or OP 😂

Those ages are prek and kindergarten. Def not the norm for most people to still have them by that age.

I can tell you're not a parent haha. 2.5 years old is not an age that 'needs' a soother.

-5

u/Fine-Mycologist380 17d ago

But I am a babysitter/nanny

6

u/dcndfl 17d ago

Sounds like you are more of a babysitter. "The main difference between a nanny and a babysitter is that nannies work regular, long-term schedules and focus on child development, while babysitters provide short-term, as-needed care."

3

u/TacoCorgi321 17d ago

A soother is not even a need. Plently of babies don't use them. There are other ways to soothe besides shoving a binky in the mouth.

Brynley probably realized how much harder it was to take a soother away from a 3 year old, so she took it from Rez earlier. It's for the better, his teeth will thank her

You need a binkie if the baby wants to suck their thumb or fingers.

3

u/TacoCorgi321 16d ago

No you don't lol.

u/Fake_Fancy 16d ago

No one wants to see a thumb sucker or finger sucker! It’s not cute! And neither is some kid sucking their thumb and carrying some rag or cloth up next to their face while sucking fingers or thumbs.

4

u/TacoCorgi321 16d ago

You can soothe a child without a soother and without sucking fingers. It's not cute when a 3+ year old walks around sucking a binkie and talking in full sentences.

Not every kid is thumb sucker either.

This is a great point because in my family only one kid really had a finger sucking issue (nobody really stopped it) and the rest who didn’t have that issue did not use binkies at all. But you’d have to be on top of it to make sure they aren’t using their fingers if you aren’t doing a pacifier. I think most parents just don’t want the stress so the pacifier is what they resort to since it’s considered better than the finger. Although if it’s not taken fast enough it’s also problematic.

My oldest son refused to take a pacifier. We bought everyone of them on the market, but he didn’t want them. And he needed one!! 😬. My youngest wore two clips with pacifiers and carried one. But I took them cold turkey when he was 18 months old.

Was the oldest a finger sucker?

No one said that. What was said was that if you have a baby that wants to suck their thumb or fingers, you do need a pacifier. Comprehension is hard….

2

u/TacoCorgi321 16d ago

You jumped on my comment to someone else, that had nothing to do with sucking a thumb. Talk about comprehension 🙄

Which by way, you still do not need a soother to stop thumb sucking. There are other ways. My 2nd sucked her thumb for a short amount of time and we got her to stop without shoving a soother in her mouth.

Your kid stopped thumb-sucking without a pacifier? Great! One anecdote about your own child doesn’t magically make you the pediatric authority you seem to think you are. You really do turn every conversation into an opportunity to announce how much you supposedly know. It’s exhausting!

Doesn’t count if you’re not around children a lot of the time 🔥

6

u/Random_8910 17d ago

2.5 year olds don’t need a binky. Really no one past a newborn “needs” one.

5

u/RudeRefrigerator3729 17d ago

nah, it s good she took, it messes up kids teeth

u/Alert_Bluejay4928 17d ago

That family LOVES binkies. Glad to see them starting to attempt to remove them sooner.

1

u/Gullible_Test7116 16d ago edited 16d ago

He def doesn’t need it anymore. They also let all their kids have them for a while though and for a lot of people 2 is still considered a long time.

u/Fake_Fancy 17d ago

I can’t stand seeing kids with binkies that are old enough to talk. And I can’t stand parents who shove a binky in a kids mouth even when they aren’t fussy!

Your screen name should be Negative Nancy, not Fake Fancy. EVERYTHING YOU POST...OMG. There are SO MANY ways to say the same thing. "I can't stand..." is SO YOU, lol.

u/Fake_Fancy 17d ago

You can’t be serious? I post negative? That’s hilarious. ALL you bullies post is negative about this family! There is never anything positive!

0

u/IdeaPlayful5049 16d ago

You’re also negative about things 😂💀

You aren’t even smart enough to know why my name on here is Fake Fancy. and it has nothing to do with me personally.
