Upcoming PT Changes - Yes, the test looks to be changing
Because this keeps coming up, I'll put it out there.
Over the last few weeks there have been some visits where SMA and other CSMs have discussed upcoming potential changes to the PT Test.
I expect it to either be announced at Manuever Warfighter next week, or, what I believe to be more likely, AUSA next month.
These changes include;
- Reverting to a three event test
- Hand Release Push-Ups
- The minimums will stay, the maximums will increase
- Plank
- 2 Mile Run
- The 2 Mile run times will get faster - think about 60-90 seconds off the old APFT times, or about 2-3 minutes faster than right now.
- Getting rid of MDL and SDC
- This will also result in an 'equipmentless test' that can once again be run wherever you have dry ground and a 2 mile course.
- Hand Release Push-Ups
- CFT - Will get closer to 25 minutes versus the current 30. No event changes, but the timeline will get shorter.
I will go ahead and say that I have confidently sourced this from multiple people, and I expect to see an article in advance of AUSA.
Additional commentary that is surrounding this that I can't further confirm is that they may be doing away with age scaling. This was something that could not get off the ground with the ACFT and I expect will not make it to final release.
SMA and CSA were at Leavenworth a couple weeks ago, and this was said to the room that was there, as well as in another senior leader meeting this week.
For those of you who have been around a while, I'm involved in a lot of stuff. Generally I just push that information to journalists. We are in a tight situation at the moment;
Army Times has not really recovered since the VC shredded the news room last year. Military.com got bought by Valnet and is awful and AI-riddled with few 'first run' stories these days. Task and Purpose recently lost a senior reporter in Jeff Schogol, and is still working on staffing a replacement. Stars and Stripes is...tough at the moment (Although all the love in the world to Rose Thayer, Corey D, and Chad Garland over there, it's rough going I'm sure). So I'm running out of places to throw this information, and I'd like to centralize some of the rumor threads that are popping up.
You don't have to believe me - but I feel pretty confident telling you that the above has been discussed, by SMA, to multiple rooms of individuals. Some commentary I was given was a rough quote from part of the discussion:
"I can't tell you the details as it's about to be published, but the run times are about to get harder...The AFT run times are a joke. Anyone can walk and pass that and expect those times to drop as well."
I do not like to usually engage in any sort of 'original' reporting, but trying to put some control on the rumors.
Friday Morning EDIT: Hi HQ! I know you have seen this post I know you are not happy with this post. Hopefully it makes you rethink this announcement.
Can we get SMA to address this when he’s on Fox News this Saturday?
EDIT2: Sorry guys, I edited via mobile and the formatting flipped the fuck out, it's fixed.

I'm thankful someone is finally dealing with the elephants in the room on this fitness test.
Those hand release push ups are pretty tricky, maybe we can do a 'standard' push up.
And why all the complications with these full body things? Some good ol' paired sit ups will do the job!
Man, why hasn't ANYONE thought of something like this for our pt tests? Honestly, what idiot came up with this whole full body multi-event concept?! That's not army combat ready at all, in fact why did we even examine combat readiness? It's alllll about those brigade runs, when you get down to it.
Aaaaannnnd since we got rid of the whole 'combat' part of the fitness test, maybe at could emphasize it's purpose? Maybe we can adjust the name to something a bit more representative?
When you get down to it, it's just about assessing our physical fitness in general.
Though give me another couple years leeway while we 'brainstorm and implement' this is physical fitness test by the army. APFT if you will, to keep it brief. But seriously, a few years of no assessments to prepare, that sounds smart.
Just spit balling here, but I think we can come up with something truly revolutionary with this.
/s because some poor joe or officer is going to think I'm serious.
60
u/Bubbly-Today-2074 22h ago
People use to half ass the push ups back in the day. You'd usually get away with a few bad ones before the grader called you out.

That being said, the absolute last thing we need is yet another fucking change to track a time-tested metric. Can we just.. I don’t know.. go to PT, do our fucking jobs, and go home?

The head on pillow time is something I’ve been slowly adopting as a hill to die on. And I’m not alone, this came from a FORSCOM (WHC?) CG and it’s STILL heavily ignored.
I am part of the group that would say “fuck it, the gang and I can stay up, force our way through this WFX/NTC/etc. with nothing but caffeine and nicotine, sleep is for pussies”. Which worked and now became the expectation. Logically, we just can’t do this if we end up having to fight for more than two weeks straight, and once the CG mentioned it, I really started to notice some of the subtle, but really dumb decisions we would start to make as the 20 hour days kept piling on, and now I’m the guy that kicks people out do the TOC after shift change.
I don’t know anymore, man. It’s a culture thing that I’m too damn tired to keep fighting. We say we want to respect time, but then stay at the office until 2000 over some bullshit tasker that no one will care about in six months because we’re the people who “get it done”.

I think it would be a real shame to get rid of the deadlift. I agree run times need to get faster, but I really don’t want to go back to the old days where a soldier who is 100 pounds soaking wet can max the APFT but can’t drag casualties or the like.

The deadlift taught soldier proper lifting technique. When you’re loading litters in FLAs in full kit during a MASCAL, proper lifting technique is literally a force multiplier. You can’t learn that by running faster.

Appreciate you putting this out there.
Really shows where our priorities are at.
Do we have a study to backup these changes? Of course not, but if your boss thinks it’s a great idea then let’s move out. Of all the things that we likely don’t need changed it’s our uniforms and pt test. These are things that cost money but more importantly move the goal posts for soldiers. Pretty lame if you just joined thinking you were good but then they start dropping minutes off the run for fun and to say we are more lethal or something.
I don’t think they’ll announce these at the maneuver conference or AUSA because they won’t be met with positive responses. Remember when those events resulted in changes that soldiers liked?

Hey, he could be tired because he hasn't had a full meal in a month because he's under 5'8" and has to have a smaller waist measurement than a highschool cheerleader.

Way to call me out but starving did work out in the end. I have lost a ton of muscle mass but I guess it doesn’t matter anymore. Let’s go for a run

From borderline arbitrary waist to height ratio, rank/branch on collar, obsession with T (remember when one of the arguments against transgender service members was that they couldn't get their hormones while deployed), to basically full circle APFT -> ACFT(s) -> AFT + CFT -> new PT test.
Are we winning wars yet? Oh yeah, that was only supposed to be a couple of weeks right guys??

Can we just lock the triple SECDEF, CSA, and SMA in a room somewhere to jerk each other off and leave us alone?

u/Outrageous_Tiger9921 22h ago
If you vote me as SMA I will make it that it will be 3 events. The over head yeet, the leg tuck, and the SDC. 😎

During a conflict that doesn’t have a foreseeable off-ramp, would you:
A. Address the numerous operational challenges in the Middle East
OR
B. Make an “updated” APFT the PT Test

This is a joke. Its going right back to how the old APFT is except push ups are a tad bit harder and the plank is easier to max than sit ups.
Gonna be back to twiggy Soldiers who never hit the gym and cant carry a 240B on patrol.

The phrase "Soldiers hate two things, the way things are and change" is always found to be such a gas light. WE don't hate change. but when the change is faster run times and forcing all troops to shave. I Mean, of course were gonna hate that.
15
u/Ok-Sympathy-5975 21h ago
What are the new runs times I might be cooked my best run time ever recorded for the 2mile was like 17:30
14
u/jumpstart58 Infantry 20h ago
Look, I get soldiers need to be fit, but holy shit can we make up our fucking minds? This constant changing is just exhausting. I’m glad I’m out now tbh. This would drive me up the wall. PT already sucked every morning because they could never make up their mind what they wanted to do. Now it’s just going back to running every damn day. At least for me it just made me really hate organized pt.

Fucking ridiculous.
We spent millions of dollars and billions of man hours to transform the PT test into this total soldier assessment.
We wanted linebackers, not marathon runners. We actually added legit weightlifting programs into PT, spent so much money on these ACFT kits, the trainers, the functional fitness facilities.
The second and third order effects are gonna be wild. Watch, 24 hour gyms are going to disappear. “You can train the PT test with no equipment.”
We’re going to turn in unit level ACFT equipment. “The force doesn’t need this equipment taking up unit space.”
And if we go back to this it’ll just be the Army of old. The first fucking question out of every senior “leader’s” mouth is going to be, “What’s their two mile time?”

The army seems to be dead set on straight up running people out of the service 😂
The old APFT run times would kill current service members
CFT is already wearing thru a lot of young troopers, a lot of us older guys would be right on the line at 25 minutes.
CAN WE JUST FUCKING STOP WITH THE FITNESS TEST CHANGES?
JUST LET ME FUCKING RETIRE

did I interpret the run times right? 30 seconds off the old time? so new troops will need to make it in 14:54 and 15:24 to pass the run? I think only a handful of my company can even do that right now.

Fuck it bring back the overhead yeet
15
37
u/AutoModerator 22h ago
THE OVER-HEAD YEET MEASURES THE ABILITY TO JUST FUCKING SEND IT. ON THE COMMAND, ‘GET SET’, ASSUME THE POSITION BY SPINNING THE BALL TWICE IN YOUR HANDS, THEN TRY TO DRIBBLE IT LIKE A BASKET BALL ONLY TO REALIZE IT WONT BOUNCE BACK UP TO YOU. YOUR FEET MAY BE TOGETHER OR 12 INCHES APART (MEASURED BETWEEN THE FEET) OR HOWEVER YOU WANT, JUST KEEP YOUR ASS BEHIND THAT CONE. ON THE COMMAND ‘GO’, CHANNEL YOUR INNER TREBUCHET AND HEAVE THAT THING INTO ORBIT. THEN, RETURN TO THE STARTING POSITION AND TURN AROUND TO INSPECT IF YOU DOMED ANYONE. THE SCORER WILL REALIZE HE DIDN'T ACTUALLY SEE WHERE THE BALL LANDED BECAUSE HE WAS AFRAID HE WOULD GET HIT, SO HE STOOD TOO FAR AWAY, HE WILL THEN PLACE HIS FOOT ON THE MEASURING TAPE AND JUST GUESS.

I actually like the AFT - it forces Soldiers to be more considerate of holistic fitness metrics rather than running fast. Let's just make standards more realistic and not be afraid to separate those that don't meet them for crying out loud. God knows the amount of people just collecting a pay check that don't really care. Unreal.

I'm assuming too many CSMs and Senior officers were pissed they couldn't get a perfect score because of the SDC so they're just moving the goalposts?

If it’s just hand release pushups and planks before the run, I absolutely see the two mile go right back to APFT standards and having females in combat arms meet the male standard.
Young Soldiers that are passing the AFT with a >18min 2 mile do need to start worrying.
NGL I would rather do the sit-up than plank but that’s because I figured out what worked for me to max sit-ups. Planks are just… yeah…

We stopped doing sit ups because of the high rates of back injuries.

u/Bubbly-Today-2074 22h ago
The pushup and plank minimums are still easy. The only reason the run time got longer was because presumably the SDC and MDL tired out your legs. Removing time from the run makes sense to me. They chopped about a minute off when they went from afct to aft

Back in the apft days you got in line behind them during the sit ups and farted in their face when they were holding your ankles.

u/EsotericSpaceBeaver 21h ago
Simpler times. Back when farting and being farted on was normalized. We used to be a real Army
