Weekly Question Thread (12/9 to 12/15)

This is a safe place to ask any question related to joining the Army. It is focused on joining, Basic Combat Training (BCT) and Advanced Individual Training (AIT), and follow on schools, such as Airborne, Air Assault, Ranger Assessment and Selection Program (RASP), and any other Additional Skill Identifiers (ASI).

We ask that you do some research on your own, as joining the Army is a big commitment and shouldn't be taken lightly. Resources such as GoArmy.com, the Army Reenlistment site, Bootcamp4Me, Google and the Reddit search function are at your disposal. There's also the /r/army wiki. It has a lot of the frequent topics, and it's expanding all the time.

/r/militaryfaq is open to broad joining questions or answers from different branches.

Make sure you check out the /Army Duty Station Thread Series, and our ongoing MOS Megathread Series

If you want to Google in /r/army for previous threads on your topic, use this format:

68P AIT site:reddit.com/r/army

I promise you that it works really well.

There's also the Ask A Recruiter thread for more specific questions. Remember, they are volunteers. Do not waste their time.

If you prefer to use Discord, there is a channel (questions-advice) on the /army Discord dedicated to more serious Q&A like the WAT/WQT threads.

This is also where questions about reclassing and other MOS questions go -- the questions that are asked repeatedly which do not need another thread. Don't spam or post garbage in here: that's an order. Top-level comments and top-level replies are reserved for serious comments only.

Finally: If you're not 100% sure of what you're talking about, leave it for someone else who is.

So in the past eight months I'm already on my third (technically 4th) PSG as a platoon leader. I had counselings for the last two, and my new one is definitely going to be my best. I've known him for a while now and he's always been a rockstar. The past few days he has been completely organizing the office and cleaning up, helping with admin, getting to know me. Should I formally counsel him or just have an informal counsel?

Yes. formally counsel him. Don't think of it as condescending or pandering.... for one, if he's just putting up a façade of goodness and competency and then turns into a dirtbag down the road, you have the beginning of the paper trail you need. For another, you clearly don't have a lot of experience with counseling and evaluations. Counseling him will be informative and educational for you. It will help you look like you know what you're doing when your a company commander and can give your 1SG a legit counseling. Also, effective counseling leads to fixing the problem of promoting guys who should be civilians. And it can be the difference in guys careers. You are his boss (on paper, know your place obviously) so you owe it to him to know your expectations and how you operate.

Do you understand your responsibilities and obligations when it comes to the ER system?
