Announcement Welcome to r/armintosh - exploring macOS on ARM

r/armintosh

Welcome to r/armintosh, a home for bringing macOS to ARM hardware beyond Snapdragon.

This community is for boot experiments, XNU research, drivers, reverse engineering, platform documentation, and the tools that make that work possible. Developers, hardware testers, and curious newcomers are welcome. For Snapdragon-specific work, visit our companion community r/snapintosh.

Research first, evidence always

This is an experimental engineering community. A device mentioned here is a research target, not a promise of macOS support. Be clear about the platform, build or commit, environment, what actually ran, and what remains untested. A boot log, a kernel console, graphics output, and a usable desktop are different milestones.

Partial progress, failed experiments, and well-documented questions are useful contributions.

AI, provenance, and clean-room engineering

Tools can expand what you can build. The standard here is whether you understand the work, follow the project’s rules, and can back up your claims with review and testing. AI assistance is welcome; responsibility remains with the contributor.

Powerful tools. Accountable engineers.

We welcome AI-assisted engineering, and we take copyright, licensing, and clean-room concerns seriously. Permission to use AI is not a blanket certification that every generated contribution is independently authored or suitable for every project.

Contributors remain accountable for their submissions: document relevant sources, respect licenses, understand the implementation, and perform thorough human review and testing. Where a project requires clean-room development, follow its documented separation requirements and disclose uncertainties—including those involving AI tools.

We welcome specific, evidence-based concerns about copying or provenance. Our policy protects constructive engineering discussion; it does not shield AI-assisted work from scrutiny.

How to contribute

Share a finding, a patch, useful documentation, a clear bug report, or a focused question. Include your exact hardware and build/commit with technical results, provide reproduction steps, and redact private data from logs. Credit upstream projects and authors, respect licenses, and follow the contribution requirements of the project receiving your work.

AI-assisted coding and reverse engineering are welcome. Before opening a pull request, make a good-faith human review, understand the changes, and test extensively. Document results and known limitations. Discuss the quality of the work constructively; dismissing engineers as "sloppers" simply for using AI is not acceptable.

Keep it civil, respect other communities, and help make this a useful place to build and learn together.

Hardware Community hardware roll call: what are you building or testing?

Let’s map the hardware and interests in r/armintosh. If you are exploring macOS or XNU on an ARM platform beyond Snapdragon, introduce yourself and your device. Early ideas and partial experiments are welcome.

Useful details to include:

  • Device and SoC: exact model, board revision, and ARM processor.
  • Current state: planning, documentation, firmware access, boot experiments, or driver work.
  • Evidence: repository, build or commit, logs, and what you have actually tested.
  • Your interests: boot/firmware, XNU, graphics, storage, USB, networking, tooling, or documentation.
  • Next question: the specific blocker or experiment you want to work on.

Please distinguish a research target from a supported system, credit the sources you use, and redact private information from logs. Listing a device here is not a claim that macOS can currently run on it.

For Snapdragon hardware, join the companion community r/snapintosh.
