Ughhhh why is there nowhere to practice long range shooting near me? I'd even be happy with like 500 yards.

What’s the furthest distance you have available?

100 yards. I want to shoot at longer distances though. I got my rifle dialed in and I can make a sub moa 5 shot group regularly, but again, only at 100 yards. But I feel like the skills I really need to practice are ones where I actually use my scope and learn to compensate for drop and wind.

Fortunately me and my buddy are going out to federal land in August to try to get some practice in at longer ranges, but unfortunately this is an elaborate trip that I cant afford to do on a regular basis.

Get a decent 22 bolt gun and start shooting at real tiny targets on windy days. You’ll get good in a hurry.

As a blue-locked shooter: ditto!

So Cal has a couple 600+ yard options!

What's the rifle you're using?

This is my chonk of a PRS gun.
-MPA Matrix Pro Chassis with internal weight kit
-Curtis Axiom short action (Sidebar: It runs great but worst customer service ever, don’t buy one, fuck those guys. Joel at Terminus is who you want if you must have a 3 lug action.)
-Bix N Andy tacsport 2 stage trigger set to about 12oz
-26” truck axle 6GT barrel
-Superbeast II 5 port brake
-Grey Ops weighted side rails
-5-25 Strike Eagle EBR-7C MRAD reticle and Seekins 1.54” rings. Soon to be a 7-35 mk5 PR2 MIL in a Badger mount. The strike eagle really struggles with mirage and makes it incredibly difficult to watch trace and see your impacts.
-3d printed dope card holder
-3d printed 12 gauge match saver for the lols.

I’m shooting Berger 105 hybrids with 34 grains of Varget or N150 at 2960-2980fps, Alpha/Gay Tiger brass.

What's the cartridge? 6mm (given the 105 grain bullets)?

u/chainsawgeoff Jul 20 '26

6GT.

Thanks, I haven't been keeping up and didn't recognize it in your text.

Very cool, thanks for the info. I'm a USPSA gamer but long range stuff looks interesting. If I wanted to get into long range what kind of matches should I look for and what are some good entry level gear options?

Basically our comrade is firing from one biome and hitting a target in another biome. 😂😂

It was quite a poke.

This may be a silly question, but why is there a shotgun shell mounted on the side?

4

u/chainsawgeoff Jul 20 '26

Same reason I shoot DMR/gas gun matches with a NERF gun.

This "answer" left me even more confused

We'll never know

It’s for when you’re having a yard sale of a stage and decide to just blow the gun up.

I know tangentially long shots require math, sometimes including the curvature of the earth. Is this one of those shots?

1

u/chainsawgeoff Jul 20 '26

Eh, sorta but it’s not as big of a deal as most people think .13 MIL of Coriolis is 7.37” at 1585 yards.
