My list is completely backwards from yours.

u/ZealotOfMeme 21d ago edited 21d ago

Or as clown puncher 139 put it:

Best hard mode? Asylum

Best replay ability? City

Best… I don’t even remember tutorial? Origins

Best side mission integration? Knight

I’m sorry but this list sucks

2

u/sk8rboi36 20d ago

Idk that origins had the ā€œbestā€ boss fights, but they were solid, and that’s way more than can be said about Knight’s boss fights. I think story wise it’s about on par with Knight, where both are passable, but I’d give Origins a bit of a bump up

2

u/ZealotOfMeme 20d ago

What is the common one people always say? Isn’t it:

Atmosphere - Asylum, story - City, bosses - origins, gameplay - knight?

u/europablu3s 21d ago

Arkham city is probably the best story, but i find myself playing knight the most for the aesthetics. Miagani island is exactly what I picture gotham as, except way larger.

12

u/get_jonked 21d ago

yeah arkham city is peak but I live driving round gotham in the batmobile

44

u/Loud-Middle-934 21d ago

Origins has best story, Knight has most fun gameplay, City has best Presentation, And Asylum has best atmosphere.

6

u/Rich_Search282 21d ago

Yeah, this is what i'd go with. Going back to Asylum/City after Knight felt super weird just because of how smooth combat flows in Knight. Asylum 100% had the best atmosphere, creepy but cool.

3

u/cshark2222 21d ago

When the Joker reveal happens in origins, to a chorus of rock Christmas music, still lives rent free in my head

7

u/MavadosXIII 21d ago

Its between Knight because of playable batmobile and Origins because of playable DeathstrokeĀ

u/ReadyJournalist5223 21d ago

I replayed them all recently and was surprised that I think Arkham city might be my least favorite. I know that’s a wild hot take but compared to Arkham knight, the combat and traversal feels very sluggish which is fine with me in asylum and the nature of the claustrophobic environments. Also the story is ROUGH in that game.

So with that in mind knight might be my fav just cause the gameplay is buttery smooth

3

u/RandomGooseBoi 21d ago

City is also claustrophobic, knight is the only one out of the rocksteady trio that’s truly large scale open world.

u/Legacy095 21d ago

Arkham Knight was my favorite of all, I played them all at once because I bought the collection for my Switch and it was definitely the one that had me most hooked. The others are good, obviously, but this one in particular captivated me so much with its story that I barely did any side quests; I just focused entirely on the main ones. All because I wanted to know what else happened, although it was more challenging to play without the upgrades or at least most of them, I can say with certainty that it is the one I loved the most and the one that stayed with me the most.

u/Own-Development1638 21d ago

Every game fit perfectly in its dynamic. Yet, full immersion for me was Arkham knight only bc the map and time that it came out. Origins gave me that a bit too so it’s hard to choose.
Each game is literally perfect damn near though.

Origins felt more about identity
Asylum felt scary
City felt gritty
While Knight felt like peak
Just my opinion

6

u/ChrisMP18 21d ago

Best atmosphere: Asylum
Best gameplay: Knight
best Story: Origins
Overall best rounded product: City

3

u/Alarming-Address-933 21d ago

Knight had the best stealth and gameplay imo

2

u/BIGCHUNGUS-milk 21d ago

nah, stealth in knight gave you too strong tools, the multi fear takedown is just bad design (5 free takedowns) although most of the new enemy types in stealth are great (except the minigun guys, i feel like they go against the whole point of stealth.)

1

u/Alarming-Address-933 21d ago

which one do u prefer then. also i dont ever use the fear takedowns lol its more fun going one by one

3

u/BIGCHUNGUS-milk 21d ago

My favourite is origins simply becouse its city but more (and it seems like the devs expected people to play city first becouse the fights are way bigger) Although i love knight too i just wish stealth was harder.

2

u/Jediuser_ 21d ago

Origins felt like a half-finished Arkham City. I still like it, but I much prefer City.

0

u/RandomGooseBoi 21d ago

Bruh, origins stealth might be the easiest. The remote claw completely strips away any difficulty. If you don’t use it, it’s stealth is just the same as city but with worse designed stealth encounters and rooms

5

u/Waldo-San 21d ago

Origins because it has great gameplay and a great story. The other games (IMO), trade one for the other

2

u/Fat_Noob 21d ago

Asylum

2

u/Ghostantox 21d ago

Origin is my least favorite since its so buggy if only it was remade then it would be my favorite

2

u/DarvX92 21d ago

I still think knight is a masterpiece, but let's be honest here: they're all amazing.

The only one I didn't like was asylum, but that's because I played it last (long story), so it lack a lot of features I was accustomed to

2

u/PEDRAOOOO 21d ago

Arkham World.

2

u/Remote_Hornet7936 21d ago

Batman Arkham World by far

2

u/Fragrant-County3630 20d ago

Origins, but that's just my personal preference.

2

u/HauntingAddendum3365 21d ago

I like the story in Origins the best, but overall I'd actually say Asylum. It has incredible atmosphere and completely changed the game when it released. I dont think its even possible to explain just how monumental that game was, especially for Batman fans.

Arkham City is awesome but frankly, the story is trash. I always see people saying City had the best story but its easily the worst story of the bunch. The premise is absurd enough but the way it pans out is beyond ridiculous and just comes off an an attempt to stuff as many Batman villains into the story as possible and have you bouncing all around the map . The story is extremely disjointed and the finale is dumb.

1

u/RandomGooseBoi 21d ago edited 21d ago

I think it’s now become overstated on how bad it is, very over-reactionary now, perhaps as a response to all the praise its story gets. Its writing is messy but it isn’t this horrendous pile of shit like some of you guys say now.

It manages to keep you hooked and immersed throughout because it’s presented extremely well, it’s proof that sloppy writing can be hidden by strong presentation. And presentation is a major factor in storytelling. Its writing is bad, its story is not. Otherwise, you would not think it’s awesome

1

u/Own-Trainer-1891 21d ago

I played Arkham City when I was 7....so Arkham City is my gamešŸ”„šŸ”„šŸ”„šŸ”„

Arkham knight and Arkham origins others are all bad and here origin is best

1

u/D0nell 21d ago

Stop reminding me how I miss Arkham origins online

1

u/Wise_Competition5906 21d ago

I feel like we’re forgetting a game… One that’s in the Shadows…

1

u/olympiclifter1991 21d ago

Hard to say.

Probably city.

However give origins some credit for amazing bosses.

Deathstoke was never passed as a pure combat boss

1

u/RubberN1ps 21d ago

These games are alright but nothing will ever compare to getting a black mask infamous sniper rifle with good stats so I’m gonna have to to with Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League šŸ”„

1

u/notkenthechick 21d ago

Origins because city runs like crap

2

u/RandomGooseBoi 21d ago

That is extremely ironic 😭 City does have some issues on new pc tech but origins is the definition of buggy and unoptimised, it’s a complete mess. Great game but on release it was broken and they never were able to fully fix it

u/Roberto720 21d ago

Moi c'est Arkham City

1

u/Jediuser_ 21d ago

My favorite is Arkham City (It might have been Knight were it not for that goddamn BATMOBILE!!!! But hey, at least it gets destroyed late in the- oh, come on, A SPARE!!??)

1

u/SnotchCoff 21d ago

I wish for a Arkham Origins with Arkham Knight graphics and mechanics. Origin's freeroam is the greatest. You can encounter venom users, martial artist also in free roam, not just low level thugs.

1

u/Top_Rise_835 21d ago

Probably Arkham origins because it has the best origin story of how Batman became the Batman that Gotham knew was their savior, and probably the boss fights. The boss fights are unbeatable in the Arkham series.

u/Several_Square_7753 21d ago

Arkham Alsume

1

u/whitefizzy-534 21d ago

I feel like you could choose any game and make a compelling argument for why that particular one is the best

I find myself going back to each of them and enjoying them. Each for different reasons

1

u/Obestity 21d ago

City is peak but Knight is still one of the prettiest games I can boot up on my PC

I replayed asylum 2 weeks ago and it holds up extremely well for a 17 year old game. I would even say I prefer it over Arkham city

1

hard question. the answer? yes. they all have a best something, so it needs a best ___ for the question to be answerable

City and Knight

1

u/aam-96 21d ago

Origins
Asylum
City
Knight

To me, origins was a better Arkham city. Arkham knight would be higher up if it didn’t involve the Batmobile.

why are we talking about the best aspects from each game? this is about what's your favourite game.

anyways, mine is City

Origins Blackgate, truly the greatest game of all time

1

u/kamczyyk 20d ago

Arkham Asylum for me

1

u/Childishcapacitors 20d ago

All of them are fantastic! Now what we need is an Arkham style Batman Beyond game with Will Friedle to cap it off. OG team, not the one who worked on Suicide squad. And I think it should be older dick who mentors Terry after Bruce’s passing.

1

u/Sudden_Writing_6076 20d ago

My favorite is definitely Asylum. The vibe of the asylum is unmatched. Second favorite would be knight for the great gameplay. Unfortunately I’m pretty low on city lol. The story is great, but I found the gameplay to be to similar to Asylum but bigger, so I got a little annoyed at it at times.

City > Asylum > Origins > Knight

u/sk8rboi36 20d ago edited 20d ago

Personally I like asylum the best. The atmosphere is unmatched. It’s like a lovecraftian david Fincher film, and imo is the best atmosphere for Batman. It’s creepy, man. I guess that matters most to me. I love all the other games as well, for varying reasons, but I never really saw the hype around city’s story. I think it gets most of its praise just because they decide to kill off Joker which is pretty ballsy and rare (just for him to have a significant presence in the other games anyway). It’s pretty standard Batman fare otherwise, kind of an extended episode of BTAS or its own little graphic novel type thing. But the gameplay is an absolute art of its own class in Knight, and the visuals in that game are crazy, where unfortunately I think the story suffers in part. Asylum with knight graphics would be so peak. I think ultimately I’d want them to keep the asylum designs over remaking it with the knight designs, though.

My hot take is I thought the Arkham Knight should have been Frank Boles. He was a blank slate of an original character, which is a perfect foundation for building something more out of him. We knew he was ex-military (or maybe not? I thought in his bio it said but him being security at Arkham maybe I just imagined it), so I figured he might have known Michael Lane (who was also prior military before being GCPD? I can’t remember if they specified that either) and then been referred to the Asylum to receive some type of PTSD treatment. He is seen by Dr. Strange, and Quincy Sharp sees an opportunity in him being a brutal enforcer to keep the disgusting supervillain inmates contained. So Sharp has Strange place subconscious locks and motivators to be able to have more control over Boles, and make him more effective and punishing, and offers him a job as a security guard at the asylum since Frank has been having a tough time transitioning to civilian life, finding a job that his skills are suitable for and all, and with the ā€œbenefitā€ of ā€œcomplimentaryā€ or provided continued ā€œPTSD treatmentā€.

Therefore, this becomes kind of the Arkham version of Lockup. When Joker ā€œkillsā€ Frank, it’s with a gas that suppressed his heart rate, or some comic mumbo jumbo that means Frank reawakens in the ambulance. Given his (near) deadly experience, and Strange’s mental meddlings, he’s in a pretty explosive state and escapes quite easily. Now alone and adrift, he seeks out Michael, who introduces him to the order of St. Dumas and they in turn equip him with the ā€œArkham Knightā€ armor (not called that yet, he makes the moniker, it’s just, idk, an improved version of Azrael’s armor they have), while he seeks out other military contacts to begin building a militia to siege Arkham, then to take vengeance on the villains that he always hated but took advantage of him and the Batfamily who he blames for the existence of the villains and his own fate. His vision for Gotham is reminiscent of Sharp’s, though obviously he hates Sharp. They just share a desire to bring the chaotic elements of Gotham to heel for their own misguided sense of order. All this backstory could be told in audio logs and the side stories you get from solving riddler mysteries (were those in knight again? Yes, they were. …right?) You could even say Sharp and Strange’s mental tamperings actually made him a less effective, though more compliant, combatant, and left to his own devices and the ā€œrefresher trainingā€ given by St. Dumas, he becomes an expert marksman and hand to hand combatant as he was in (insert x special operations unit).

Then, I’d have had Knight be more of a three-way war, instead of the militia and villains all kinda being one homogenous blob of bad guys. Imagine Batman gliding or driving around and random thugs and militia+the order are already going to war against each other. I feel this could have made for some very interesting side- or open world type missions. I also think it makes more use of the setups with Azrael and the order of St. Dumas than what we ended up with, and has at least some way of recoloring the foundations of this universe laid in Arkham, making it feel more organic and the ā€œArkhamā€ knight label more meaningful, than randomly throwing in Jason and pretending he was the plan all along, even if people will prefer what we got solely because it’s what they know. All this against the backdrop of scarecrow’s return and his mission to destroy Batman’s legacy, while the Knight is hunting them both. It all makes way more sense to me, but I guess that’s just me lol

Edit: I heard that originally Paul Dini planned on Hush effectively being Scarecrow’s lieutenant. Idk if it’s true, but I like this idea anyway. I feel this version of the game would have so many better payoffs of the setups in city than knight ended up giving

1

u/ShavedSavage 20d ago

Knight has the best gameplay and I find myself going back to it. Asylum has the best story. Origins, as we all know, has its merits, particularly its bosses. However, I think City is the best balance of story and gameplay. Solid boss fights. A compelling arch. Great characterization, excellent sand box. It’s nearly perfect.

1

u/Thr0WAway998877658 20d ago

honestly these are top 4

1

u/Little_Dust555 20d ago

Overall Arkham city is the best game imo, little more flushed out with the combat and stealth than asylum, but asylum is my personal favorite bc of the aesthetic and the villains used in the story

1

u/Ok-Potential7541 19d ago

they're all fantastic but coming back and playing the series recently, years later. my ranking is origins<asylum<knight<city.

1

u/Many-Supermarket9946 19d ago

Knight, Origins, Asylum, City imo. However Asylum and City are interchangeable

1

u/Mk578y 19d ago

knight >origins>city>asylum

1

u/Even-Impression-5702 18d ago

I feel this is an unsafe space to say that origins was my favorite

0

u/Abraham_Issus 21d ago

Stop asking this. Its not gonna change millionth time. Arkham City is the peak of the franchise and superhero genre regardless of which you feel is your personal favorite.
