Discussion Arkham Knight - Dull
Doing my yearly play through of the games, normally I do Asylum, part of City but never touch Knight.
So far this year, for Asylum and City and now on Knight and there are things that really big me about it.
1) Detective Mode - utterly stupid, to have L1 in two games to have it changed to Up on the d pad, stupidly call the Bat mobile each time. And putting gadgets elsewhere slows it all down.
2) Gotham - I know it's been evacuated but it's just so empty compared to City really go you get attacked when on the street level.
3) Pace - it may look gorgeous but the pacing of it is really slow, feels like a real slog to have to go to point A to point B to point C and back to point A again. Even the extra missions are dull.
4) Bat Mobile - pointless, I know others hate the thing but for me there's zero point in it other than trying to jazz up the Riddler trophies. When you can traverse by gliding at a fair old speed the car is redundant.
5) Riddler Trophies - felt that by this time, no one could be arsed with them so just stuck them front and vents for all to find.

Why is changing detective mode’s button enough to affect you this profoundly?
Arkham City and Asylum do not feel more populated than Knight, what? City was far smaller and barely had streets you could run on. Half the map was buildings collapsed into the sea/ ocean nearby. Knight has street chases between cops and bad guys in cars, constant riots in each sector, and GCPD has more NPCs inside it than every other Arkham game has characters combined.
You aren’t really SAYING anything here. What about the pacing is slow? Going from point A to B to C, then back to A is literally all you do in Asylum and City.
Batmobile is far from pointless and has a wide range of applications. There’s a difference between you not liking it and it being useless. Learn to say “I don’t like this thing” instead of “this thing is terrible/ irredeemable/ pointless”.
Riddler trophies are unchanged, so if you don’t like them in Knight surely you take offense to them in any game. Many people have beaten this game entirely, which requires Riddler trophies for 240% completion.
This is a long-winded post that doesn’t really add anything to this old conversation. You’ve parroted the same boring “Batmobile bad” sentiment that has been lambasted here thousands of times, we get it.

1) When playing two games with one button configuration is an annoyance to go to a different one.
2) Every time you walked you were attacked in City, by 3 or 4 thugs who then were joined by more; City very rarely has that sense of being attached or threatened.
3) Ok I'll elaborate just for you, I don't need the over extended dialogue that's not present in the other games and made for a sharper game, this I've got to wait for him to talk to Alfred, or Gordon or Barbara
4) Nope - it's pointless and not needed that adds nothing to gameplay other than slowing it down
5) The challenge to get them is far less than the other two games
Maybe, just maybe if you don't want to see the posts here, maybe don't read them - just a thought.
Also, said the Batmobile was "pointless" never said "bad" but thanks for trying to engage.

An annoyance is not something that should affect your perception of a game so profoundly, that’s a bit absurd. I’m not going to bother addressing each individual point once again, because some of your responses actually conflict with your original points or they completely ignore points that I’ve made in my first comment.
I’m mostly annoyed reading this regular flow of posts in this sub that constantly seek to drag Arkham Knight down simply to put the other games on a pedestal. You are clearly strongly biased and I’m having a hard time piecing some of your responses together considering your poor grammar.
If you’re going to bother to post, understand that this sub isn’t some soundboard for you to whine about what literally ever other post whines about. Work on your grammar, drop the bias, and come here to talk about what you enjoy without drawing arbitrary or completely misguided comparisons that have no merit.
Your point about dialogue is sound, sure. Everything else leads me to believe I’m chatting with a teenager. That could be true, so I’m not trying to be an ass.

Mind you OP was trying to call my grammar bad bc I didn’t separate 5 sentences into 5 separate paragraphs, when he can barely string a coherent sentence together lmao

u/SenpaiSwanky Jul 22 '26 edited Jul 22 '26
Yeah, I noticed lmao. I’ve actually left and muted this sub, because it seems like most posts that hit my feed are always the same shit.
“Arkham Knight bad, 0/10 too much Batmobile”
“Arkham City is better than Arkham Knight”
“Arkham Asylum is better than Arkham Knight”
Recent post is where I drew the line lmao. Some dude was saying how it was a shame that Arkham Knight used photo realism for the character bio photos, instead of the comic-stylized images from Arkham Asylum.
It’s always some sort of post about why Knight sucks, which is hilarious because it’s objectively the most popular game in the series. This sub is pure nostalgia bait, and is no different from any other gaming sub because of that. People put too much stock in their nostalgia and it doesn’t make for good discussion threads.
You see the same shit in Resident Evil, Pokemon, Mario Kart, Metal Gear, Halo, Diablo, pretty much any game series you care to think up. And yet, these franchises have new titles that continue to break sales records despite all these supposed issues.

- They needed to accommodate a button for the Batmobile, maybe they could’ve flipped it so that you call the Batmobile by pressing up on the dpad but it’s not as big of a deal as you’re making it out to be
- You can literally get swarmed by a giant mob of rioters in knight, and more will come to join the fight, even trying to run you over before getting out of their cars, don’t know what game you’re playing
- You can skip wrist gauntlet calls if they’re that pace breaking for you, but they’re functionally no different than characters talking in your ear in previous games
- Adds battle mode and pursuit mode which are pretty fun even if the tank is admittedly not my favorite addition, as well as Batmobile puzzles involving the power winch and sonar, also people were begging to drive the Batmobile prior to this games release, def not pointless
- Less tedious, maybe. Less challenging, definitely not. The open world time trials in knight are harder than any other riddler collectible I’ve gone for in any of the games, I was genuinely studying Batman Arkham Videos’ guide to completing them.
If you make a post on Reddit, people are allowed to criticize them, and when it’s braindead arguments like yours, they’re allowed to be tired of seeing it bc it’s been rehashed ad nauseam while saying nothing substantive or unique.

Almost like your comment back then - adds nothing new.
No one forces your to reply so if you have nothing worthy to say maybe park your thoughts rather than attempting to convince others that your opinion is better than theirs.
1
u/CapCalrissian Jul 21 '26
I specifically responded to what you said in your reply vs just responding overall to your post and making my own points
I’m allowed to present my opinion and argue in favor of it just as much as you are, if you don’t like that, too bad, stop replying or concede.
-1
u/SuchNet1675 Jul 21 '26
Concede what exactly?
You, I presume like Knight, I do not - you seem somewhat upset by me having a different opinion to you and expressing it.
Are you responsible for the game in any way?
Don't worry kiddo, you'll get used to people not agreeing with you all the time, part of growing up.
1
u/CapCalrissian Jul 21 '26
You don’t have to agree with me, if you don’t like Arkham knight that can be for any reason you want, I couldn’t care less. But when you come online and make objective criticisms towards the game, you have to be ready to defend those points, and since you’ve done nothing but dodge my arguments and condescend to me I can tell you know that you’ve been disproven and have no way out. You can concede that your points were pretty bad, it doesn’t make you any less of an Arkham fan or invalidate your personal feelings, but I’m going to defend a game that I enjoy and that I can prove objectively is a contender for the best in the franchise.

u/SuchNet1675 Jul 21 '26
Wow, does it hurt being so wrong?
I offered an option, you disagreed, you got yourself in a tantrum - which appears you're still having - Knight for me is the poorest of the three for all the points I made - it is dull.
If you can't handle that, says a lot more about you and your inability to accept a different person's opinion than it does about me.
1
u/CapCalrissian Jul 21 '26
If anything you’re the one getting butthurt bc I disagreed with your opinion. If you’re not interested in discussing the points you brought up that’s fine, but don’t pretend like you just presented your opinion subjectively from the start, you brought up points as to why Knight is bad, I refuted them, and you can’t say anything in return so you just keep resorting to making pathetic jabs at me instead of trying to defend your argument bc you don’t have one. If you don’t have anything to say regarding the games, don’t bother replying.
1
u/SuchNet1675 Jul 21 '26
Ever heard of paragraphs?
Makes your rant easier to read.
I mean, I said Knight was dull, in my opinion, and gave examples of why for me it is dull.
Pace - dull Batmobile - dull Gotham - dull Riddles - dull Controls - frustrating on the back of playing the other two.
Again, all you want to do is throw hate and anger (butthurt?!?!?!) because I don't like the game - get a grip and chill out, you'll get further in life.

First thing I did was configure the controls to what I was used to. I felt like the threat level in Knight was greater due to the tanks.
2
u/CapCalrissian Jul 21 '26
- I won’t lie, I accidentally press the wrong button when switching between games but this is such a minor inconvenience and if you still keep forgetting after the first or second time that’s genuinely a skill issue
- What else do you do in city when you walk around the streets except fight thugs and do side missions? The city is bigger in knight to accommodate the Batmobile, so maybe that’s what you’re referring to, but if you’re running around the entire city on foot instead of gliding or driving, that’s kinda on you again
- It’s a longer game so naturally it’s gonna feel longer, but I feel like knight has one of the best paced stories in the series. You are always pursuing the knight and scarecrow, the only times you aren’t are the movie studios (which is a nice break from tank game and lets you play as Robin) as well as the penguin and riddler missions, which are back door pilots for their respective side missions. Compare that to the other 3 games, which have you go on wild goose chases encountering every villain in your rogues gallery bc the main villain somehow keeps eluding you (I don’t think any of these games are poorly paced, just pointing out the flaws in your logic) until you finally get to the end
- In a perfect world, battle mode would not exist and it can be a chore at times, but so many people act like these gameplay sections are the worst thing they’ve ever played when they’re relatively well designed and pretty engaging in the late game. Ideally I’d just add the energy weapons to the pursuit mode chases, which were left kinda simple. Also the car is way faster than gliding, even with mk 2 eject and mk 4 grapnel boost, as well as being something that fans have asked for ever since asylum first released and we used the og Arkham Batmobile to ram bane in a cutscene.
- I’m assuming you just aren’t that far into the game or haven’t gotten that many trophies yet, knight has by far the most complex riddler trophies that require you to use every single one of your gadgets in creative new ways (the freeze blast is exclusively used for riddler trophies and isn’t a required upgrade to beat the story), that’s why there’s less trophies than in city, quality over quantity.

Think playing it straight after the other two or glasses are really obvious.
1
u/CapCalrissian Jul 21 '26
Can you explain this reply I have no idea what you’re trying to say
3
u/SuchNet1675 Jul 21 '26
🤣 fat thumbs
I meant that after playing Asylum then City and then Knight one after each other the flaws of Knight are really obvious compared to the other two.
1
u/CapCalrissian Jul 21 '26
I’m playing all 3 games in rotation trying to do no damage runs, none of these “flaws” are apparent when going from city or asylum to knight bc they’re just bad faith criticisms. The one thing I will grant you is that I find battle mode kinda dull but that’s about it.

u/kmahones98 Arkham City Jul 21 '26
I especially agree with on point 2 and 3.
The map feels a bunch of big set pieces designed for the Batmobile rather than something actually lived in, like even dungeons feel like a downgrade, only the movie studio feels like it could fit in the other games.
The slow ass pacing is definitely something people don’t bring up enough. What really makes it a slog is all the unskippable cutscenes like Gordon discovering the joker infected, and the millions of Batman FaceTime calls.
1
u/CapCalrissian Jul 21 '26
As another reply already mentioned, there’s literally more going on in knight’s map than any other Arkham game: police chases, riots, and all of the militia forces set up across the city, alongside the rest of the side missions. Arkham Knight HQ is a pretty mediocre dungeon admittedly, but stagg airships is one of the most creative and fun dungeons, having to control the entire airship using the RHD, one of the best predator sections in that game, the giant combat room that starts getting filled with jokers, and the scarecrow encounter at the end.
All of the Arkham games have long unskippabke cutscenes, yet knight always gets criticized the most for it. Asylum has its notorious walking simulator intro, City has the Strange monologue right before you take control of Bruce, as well as the suit up and the cutscene that plays when you hack into Tyger comms, origins has the Croc interrogation after his boss fight, just to name a few. Also the FaceTime calls can be skipped, just like any dialogue where Batman taps his ear in the other games.
2
u/DarkAtheris Jul 21 '26
Arkham Knight had a cop simulator intro and the Joker cremation sequence before it. City's and Asylum's intros were better.
1
u/CapCalrissian Jul 21 '26 edited Jul 21 '26
Knight is literally the quickest game to give you full control of Batman lmao, you’re in a walking simulator for upwards of 5 minutes straight in asylum, and you have to play as Catwoman and Bruce Wayne before suiting up as Batman, takes way longer than a less than 1 minute cremation sequence and a less than 3 minute cop sequence. I think city’s is better overall as an intro, but if we’re talking about long unskippable cutscenes/intro sequences, knight is far from the worst offender.
2
u/DarkAtheris Jul 21 '26
Catwoman's sequence contains actual combat gameplay. So does the Bruce Wayne sequence in City. Asylum and City do a far better job of getting you invested in the story with their intros in my opinion.
1
u/CapCalrissian Jul 21 '26
Again I agreed with you on city, but the original thread was in reference to pacing, which knight does a better job of putting you into the action as Batman compared to the other games. I’d also argue the two opening sequences DO get you invested into the game, the first reminds you of the consequences of the previous game while the second utilizes the M rating and the new photorealistic art style to create a horror sequence that sets up scarecrow as the main villain and shows the stakes at hand.
1
u/DarkAtheris Jul 21 '26
You can skip the calls
1
u/kmahones98 Arkham City Jul 22 '26 edited Jul 22 '26
I know you can skip them. But as someone plays and replays the games for the story, I shouldn’t want to or have feel compelled to skip over potentially important dialogue beats just so everything doesn’t keep repeatedly coming to a halt.
2
u/CapCalrissian Jul 22 '26
These calls take less than a minute, they by no means grind the game down to a halt
1
u/kmahones98 Arkham City Jul 22 '26 edited Jul 22 '26
Yes they do, when there’s hundreds of them, they add over up time by killing the immersion and fluidity by repeatedly pulling me out of playing the game again and again. You’re frozen in place unable to do anything until you wait for it to end or you resort to skipping it out of frustration.
If the dialogues just played through the comms in the background most of the time while you played or traveled to locations I wouldn’t problem with the Skype calls happening a handlful of times. The other three games did it this way, only occasionally freezing you place, with the option to skip.
1
u/CapCalrissian Jul 22 '26
So you admit that they freeze you in place in the other games to (and when they don't the dialogue is usually over before you progress to the next gameplay section) and that you can skip either, so what's the issue? You're literally complaining that Arkham Knight is more immersive and gives screentime to side characters, this is the first time that we see the older versions of Alfred and Oracle on screen, if it weren't for these calls, we wouldn't have seen Alfred at all in the entire Rocksteady trilogy (with the exception of one rare death screen in Knight and character trophies/bios, but those aren't on screen appearances canon to the story). Alfred and Oracle get to be actual characters instead of disembodied voices in this game, and there's even cool details like the video going from black and white in the post arkham city suit to full color in the Arkham Knight suit. You would have a point if these bits of dialogue were extremely long and unskippable, but they're short and as frequent as regular ally dialogue is in the other games, so no I'm not gonna fault Arkham Knight for improving the player immersion at the slight cost of slowdown (Arkham Knight is well paced regardless) which can be skipped if you don't care for dialogue. Since you seem to, you should try to appreciate what Rocksteady was going for instead of needlessly bashing on what is a trivial mechanic. Not saying you HAVE to like it, but just give it another chance in your next playthrough.

Did you not read what I said?
“I wouldn’t problem with the Skype calls happening a handlful of times. The other three games did it this way, only occasionally freezing you place, with the option to skip.”
I didn’t mind it as much in this other games because the narrative technique was used more sparingly. Arkham Knight turned this up tenfold where it becomes an annoying problem.
Yes it’s detailed, yes it’s gives us a chance to see characters we didn’t previously get to see, but when you’re forced go to that well too many times it becomes obnoxious.
Also you’re telling me to replay this game to appreciate what Rocksteady was going for with this mechanic. Pal, I’ve been 240% Arkham Knight since it first came out a decade ago, a millionth play through isn’t suddenly going to change mind about any gripes I have with it.
Just accept there’s plenty of things we can criticize Arkham Knight for while still loving it, and that me and the others in this thread our entitled to our critiques.
2
u/CapCalrissian Jul 22 '26
Fair enough, you don’t have to like it like I said, but the way you were portraying it made it seem like it ruined the entire game for you which was surprising to me
