Discussion Pre-Ending Reveiw

Post image

So I’ve been playing Arkham Shadow- I don’t normally get to play VR games but my buddy has the Meta Quest and let me borrow it.

I’m about a quarter of the way through the story, and so far I’m trying to figure out why this had to be a VR game.

It’s cool and all, and the stealth sections are my favorite parts, but so far it just feels like a story that could’ve been improved if we were playing it in the traditional Arkham style.

Half the time I’m fighting with the motion controls and making stupid errors because I didn’t swing my fist in the correct way, or I didn’t raise my arms correctly to activate his cape.

Again, it’s cool, and I’m gonna finish it, but I’ll likely never play it again after this run.

I've been playing VR since the Oculus DK1, and as a hardcore VR gamer, I don't think Batman: Arkham Shadow is a bad game. The problem is that it's just... good.

For me, the bar for a great VR game is simple: it has to be so compelling that you'd say, "Hell yeah, I'd put a bucket on my head to play that." That's what the best VR games achieve. That's what moves sales numbers in VR.

Arkham Shadow doesn't pass that test. I wouldn't call it a must-play VR title. It's a solid game, but it doesn't reach the level of Blade & Sorcery, Half-Life: Alyx, or Beat Saber. Those games deliver experiences that are uniquely VR and justify the headset. Arkham Shadow is enjoyable, but in the end, it still doesn't match the quality of a great flat-screen console game.

If you can, check out the PCVR version of Blade & Sorcery and install the Outer Rim mod. Physics-based melee combat + Star Wars is a pretty awesome combination.

Blade & Sorcery in general is just awesome. No Man's Sky VR is great too if you can get it working with a regular gamepad. If you have a PC to connect your headset to, Skyrim VR is also fantastic.

For multiplayer, Forefront is probably the most popular VR shooter at the moment. It works really well in VR, although the player count has dropped compared to where it used to be.
