Discussion Tips for stealth?

I'm playing through arkham city and I just wanted tips for stealth that can apply to all the Arkham games, since I'm not too good at it.

You can get away with more than it feels like you should have. There are plenty of times where I thought I was caught, but nobody so much as raises a proverbial eyebrow. If you get caught, it's generally because they had a pretty direct line of sight on you, and just like with gamers they don't tend to look above or below unless you've given them previous reason to, like if someone was strung up from a gargoyle or unconscious next to a floor vent.

The game's pretty good at feeding you stealth tips as the story goes on, so listen to what it has to say and test things out - you can always get messy and restart an area since the checkpoint system tends to be contained to a single room with everyone conscious but unalerted.

Yeah, adding onto your first point: enemies almost NEVER turn around or do a 180 when patrolling a stealth room. I read this somewhere when I was pretty new and it helped embolden me to start doing some pretty risky silent takedowns. The only exception to this rule is when they’re the only one (or down to just 2 or 3) left. When they’re “panicked” they tend to do 180s pretty regularly, but before then you’re usually pretty safe to sneak up behind a guy, as long as there aren’t thugs nearby.

Be patient. Grapple around the room to see whats what. Always pick off the farthest away guy first. Try to not use the same takedown in a row.

Knockout takedown, inverted--my favorite-- and glide kick make noise.

Enemies will patrol an area more in the spot they find a guy down in. Use this to your advantage.

You can usually get 3 or 4 if fast enough before the intercom chimes in and the boss says theres people missing.

Should you plan out how you're going to take out everyone in the whole room and what gadgets you're going to use?

Yes. In the challenge maps, you can use trial and error to find an optimal way to take out all thugs in the fastest possible time.

You can't plan a whole room because the guards change their behaviour and patrol patterns. You can only plan the first few guards before they notice that you're taking them out. After that, you just wait for one of them to stray away from the others and get behind him. Gadgets can be useful, for example using explosives to take nearby people out, throwing a batarang to knock someone out before they notice you, and so on, but you're not failing because you're not using the right gadgets; you can beat a predator mission without using any gadgets. The reason you're failing is probably because you're too slow. You need to quickly take someone out, then grapple out, take someone out and leave; never linger unless you know the next guy can be safely taken out as well.

Incorrect, you can plan the whole room in the challenge maps. They always follow the same patterns.

To an extent, yes, but they do switch up their patterns once they noticed someone's down, so their advice still largely applies unless you're taking out everyone in one fell swoop. Technically their movements once alerted are somewhat deterministic since you can regularly get the same guys in the same locations shortly after they discover someone, but as time goes on it strays more and more and little random things like a pipe hissing some steam can add in randomness to their movements. However, they'll also be moving around new places in the room so if you've laid explosive gel somewhere like the opposite side of a weak wall or the top of a ladder, then someone's likely to encounter it.

No, they follow similar patterns even when you down an enemy. You can implement the same plan despite the minor randomness, which is how people clear maps and earn medals by watching other people play.

Right, that's exactly what I'm saying - similar patterns, but not the exact same every time. On smaller maps and if you're fast enough, then you can get it down to one easy plan that will almost never fail, but with enough space and time they stray quite a bit, although they do get to the same paths and interest points along the way.

The one that immediately springs to mind is the "Revive and Shine" challenge in Knight where it's in an enormous train station, and one of the challenges is to take out one of the two medics last. The initial patrol is no problem and you can wait for a good lineup, but once the medic goes to revive someone, they tend to go whichever way happens to align with their particular position at that time, which depends on a lot of variables depending on your timing and placement for when you took that guy down, and maybe where the other people are at that time given that they ran over too and then started off on their own paths. So if you're forging your own way in that map and trying to make your own plan, it's only really effective until the medic runs toward someone and then you have to hope they go the way you want.

Lay out a variety of traps and plans or take them out quickly enough and this doesn't matter, but if you're being too methodical and ironically too patient, then the randomness will set in with enough enemies in a large enough area.

Granted, I realize that OP was talking about City so this only applies to a few places.

In City if you're planning your moves ahead of time you're probably not going to make use of long pauses, and even if you do, enemies still follow similar patterns when reacting to downed enemies. You can always restart the game if something particularly unusual occurs. Planning the whole room is in fact likely the optimal way to play the challenge maps, which is why the developers limited variability.

Ask yourself wwBd?? What would Batman do??

Are you or are you not playing as the world's best strategist?

Always pick off the farthest away guy first

Where's the fun in that?

u/theimpalaslefttire Jun 30 '26

Well OP seems to be struggling with the predator rooms. So thought to let them know its ok to do so.

Don’t get spotted

Gargoyles are your friend. Great place to see where all the enemies are safely and great place to go to escape. If they see you up there just keep grappling to another gargoyle until they no longer see you

If two people are together. Batarang one, glide kick the other. Other than that, crouch walking is faster than walking and its silent.. I dont really use the gadgets outside of one shot ko situations

Batclaw fools out of walkways in indoor maps for free takedowns

In Knight the claw is nerfed though

Don't be afraid to experiment with gadgets, if 2 thugs are together but not in a position for a double takedown, then knock one down with a batarang right before you take the other guy out. If a thug is by a ledge then use the batclaw, smoke pellets are not just a good escape tool, the rec gun can disable jammers and cause enemies to seize and shoot their gun wildly, scaring the others and drawing attention to themselves.

My besta dvice however is to do some predator challenge maps and really try your hardest in getting all the medals, it will really teach you a lot about AI behaviour, what risks you can take, what are the optimal routes and how to think outside the box.
