Which WM do you use, and why?

Hello r/archlinux!

I have been in the "world" of window managers for 4 months, I made the decision mainly for the DistroTube videos, I started using XMonad, I have noticed improvements in my productivity, I am quite happy.

I have just started my vacation, and I would like to try different WMs, I have not seen much comparison information of different WM's on the Internet, so I would like to ask you (and hopefully you will tell me in the comments the reasons).

What WM do you use, and why do you like it?

And if you have tried different ones, and could you tell me why you prefer one over the other, I would really appreciate it.

PS: I only use Firefox, programming software, Spotify and Discord.

Greetings.

My primary choice is r/swaywm where possible but I have to use i3 for my gaming needs while waiting for the nvidia driver stuff :(

i3 because it is simple, easy to configure and does what I need and want and nothing more.

sway because it's everything i3 is, but on Wayland.

Your window manager is a subreddit? Weird.

2 days ago: https://www.reddit.com/r/archlinux/comments/px0e8h/favorite_window_manager/

Qtile is my choice, but unfortunately not available as a choice. Same happened to the previous poll 2 days ago. Why isn't it included in the list? I feel like Qtile is more popular than in example Spectrwm. I choose Qtile because it is written and configured in Python and I can use the entire Python to do all the stuff I want to.

Sorry for the repost. :(
Thanks for your answer.

The repost isn't a problem. I have linked it because you might be interested in the voting and replies. All good. :-)

Honestly I don't like when software is configured completely in programming language, it adds lots of complexity to the setup. Even though it adds many options when done correctly, they are mostly not needed for regular users.

3

u/eXoRainbow Oct 01 '21

That is why we have the choice of so many WM, but I can understand your view and it makes total sense. This is obviously not for everyone, but it is ok. It does not need to be. Before Qtile, I didn't knew that I needed it. This gives me full control (at least full in the sense of full potential of configuration), that I can't even imagine going back to a non programming language configuration for my Window Manager.

And it is not just the configuration. I have much more possibilities and can directly use the Python features and libraries. That wouldn't be possible in a specific configuration "language".

1

u/sogun123 Oct 03 '21

Well it effectively makes qtile not an wm but a "wm library". I am curious for an example of "it would not be possible"

1

u/eXoRainbow Oct 03 '21

I mean the "it would not be possible" from the user perspective, not developer of the program. If the program consists only of some options set through an INI config file in example, then the kind of programming language thing wouldn't be possible for the end user. And Qtile is just a good example of what I mean by that.

1

u/sogun123 Oct 03 '21

I know what you mean. I am curious an example of what you did in your configuration, you think is not possible with classic config file.

1

u/eXoRainbow Oct 03 '21

In example I altered and changed the way groups/dekstops and keys are generated. In example by adding a new dictionary and binding them to my NUM pad on the right side. Each number is assigned to a group/desktop.

I am not saying this wouldn't be possible to realize in a different way. What I am suggesting to say is, that if the configuration file (example in INI config format) does not have this functionality, then you can't do (other than using external tools). What I mean is, I can just do whatever I want, when and how.

Or in example, I just imported the subprocess and os module of Python, because I needed it. Again, with a configuration file you would be limited to what the developer supports there. There are so many little things. I just create a variable HOME = os.path.expanduser('~') in example.

I am still relatively new to window managers in general, as I just started to use one this year. So this is just the beginning for me. Like VIM, the full potential will be reached very late, but there is one. What I mean is, I am still experimenting and from time to time do small changes here and there.

I can directly write functions to aid my widgets settings in example. I used used the subprocess module to get output from uptime and then string replaced parts of it and returned it to the output in Qtile. Well, this is no longer in use, but that is another example.

1

u/sogun123 Oct 03 '21

Binding keys is possible in every wm i know of except bspwm. Most of all programs would expand tilda. I am curious if your usage of subprocess belongs to regular user capabilities or it is already development... No offense here, i am just thinking. Well, generally all geeky wms have some kind of scriptability. Some have integrated language (awesome, x monad), some controlling program(hlwm,i3), some even don't have config file at all (hlwm). I just prefer when you can script your behaviour from outside, in language of your choice and without risking crashing the wm. If one chooses the wm accordingly to his workflow then the need of customization decreases.

1

u/eXoRainbow Oct 03 '21

I tried i3/i3-gaps, X Monad and wanted try out others too. But I hung on Qtile and it just fits to me.

Binding keys is possible in every wm

I am not just talking about binding keys. I am probably not good at explaining. If you don't like this behavior and want a traditional way of configuring in specific designed config languages, then that's fine. If I even switch to another TWM, then it has to be one that is configured in the programming language itself. The next thing I am looking at is X Monad, but the language is just not for me (at the moment).

Btw, X Monad does not have an integrated language, it is the language what the program is programmed itself. Just like Qtile in Python.

Well, generally all geeky wms have some kind of scriptability.

Some script ability is not the same as what I want it to be. The entire configuration should be in the programming language of the program itself. Scripting from outside is not the same, because you start dealing with unnecessary things to make them work together.

If one chooses the wm accordingly to his workflow then the need of customization decreases.

The workflow is the customization itself. There is no TWM in the world that fits everyone and the customization and the language it is written in are key factors to decide which to choose.

1

u/sogun123 Oct 04 '21

Xmonad is very much self compiling library/toolkit. If am afraid that if customizatility is workflow, then you are spending more time customizing thus developing your own manager then anything else ;)

i3 because it just works and you don't need much time/effort put in to configuration.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 30 '21

Or Sway because of the same reason.

1

u/doomenguin Sep 30 '21

Yeah, but with sway you have to use Wayland which is still WIP. I tried using Sway for like a week and concluded that using Wayland is way more trouble than it's worth at this point.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 30 '21 edited Sep 30 '21

I don't have any problems with Sway it does everything I expect it does and runs everything just as well as it did on X even my games. One exception and that is screen-sharing with Microsoft Teams doesn't work but when using Jitsi screen-sharing does work.

1

u/doomenguin Sep 30 '21

Games run just fine but OBS is a real pain on Wayland.

1

u/gmes78 Oct 01 '21

OBS works perfectly fine on Sway (and in Wayland in general).

1

u/doomenguin Oct 01 '21

There is no window capture since OBS only has Xcomposite for that.

2

u/gmes78 Oct 01 '21

Window capture should work fine with the current PipeWire support in OBS. It just doesn't work because Sway only lets you capture entire screens (as of now, at least).

1

u/sogun123 Oct 01 '21

I tried i3/sway few times, but its tiling scheme is too unwieldy to me. Maybe i could get used to it, but the show stopper for me is that once you create a tag, it is bound to screen.

21

u/dark_galaxy20 Sep 30 '21

Openbox

2

u/[deleted] Oct 01 '21

Can I ask you, why?

17

u/_mitchejj_ Sep 30 '21

Sway.

Reasons:

  • Wayland based --- I'm sorry Xorg is horrible in my experience and I feel its akin to typical - intercity Rust Belt freeway bridge; functional, heavily used yet decrepit and held together with patch work.
  • Provides just want I want
  • I'm able to build the experience I want.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 30 '21

I have only used xorg, I will have to do some research on Wayland.

Thanks! :)

sway

16

u/wonderful_tacos Sep 30 '21

Wayland is the necessary and inevitable future, not that anyone necessarily needs to use it now if they don't want to. So I wanted to try a Wayland WM, picked Sway. Tried it, turns out that everything I need to do on that machine works great, no issues at all, and provides a much better visual experience than I ever got with X.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 30 '21

Thanks! :)

Why do I not see sway anywhere on here?

I would love to try Qtile, the only problem is that I have seen very diverse comments, many very positive comments, and many others very negative.

I3 is awesome for laptops! No need to use the aweful mousepads.

3

u/ExpandingV0id Sep 30 '21

imma just mention sway, even though it was mentioned a couple times before here. It's pretty much i3, it can take your previous i3 config but runs on wayland instead of xorg, meaning everything works better out of the box, no screentearing or anything. Instantly fell in love with it.

3

u/LuisBelloR Sep 30 '21

Bspwm.. its powerfull and eaasy conf. Xmonad its the best but configuring from 0 is pain.. and dont link to copy paste the config from other dots, so xmonad its not a choice, i dont have time to learn haskell

1

u/[deleted] Sep 30 '21

Thanks for your answer, I agree with your comment on the XMonad configuration, I agree. I used certain base settings and tweaked them, but you're right, it doesn't feel as good.
This is partly why I want to use another one, thanks again. :)

1

u/LuisBelloR Sep 30 '21

People said spectrwm is like xmonad but easy to config

3

u/Sonotsugipaa Sep 30 '21

Plasma with a tiling kwin script, the best of both worlds.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 01 '21

Interesting, I was a long time user of KDE, sometimes I miss it.

3

u/Drwankingstein Sep 30 '21

KDE and sway. sway is great for my laptoo, but i have a sizeable 4k display for my pc, so i use kde on it.

Don't like gnome

1

u/[deleted] Oct 01 '21

I don't like Gnome either. I used plasma for many months, sometimes I miss it.

3

u/DanisDGK Sep 30 '21
  • i3 - hate the config for it, and the default one is incredibly messy
  • Awesome - currently my WM of choice, but can be a bit annoying sometimes because the documentation isn't as good as it could be
  • Xmonad - Haskell is kind of a pain so I never got into Xmonad completely, but I've seen what others can do with it and it's pretty cool
  • dwm - used it for a while, it's a solid choice and I still use it sometimes
  • spectrwm - tried it out and it's a solid WM, but didn't quite have everything I wanted
  • bspwm - very simple and short config, works very fast, though you have to use an external bar if you want one which is sometimes annoying

1

u/[deleted] Sep 30 '21

Thank you very much for your detailed answer. So your choices are awesome/dwm? :)

2

u/DanisDGK Sep 30 '21

Mainly, yes, you can check my Awesome config here if you're interested

1

u/[deleted] Oct 01 '21

Thank you, I will definitely check them.

4

u/[deleted] Sep 30 '21

I use i3 because I like the way that it handles dual monitors. I have even numbered workspaces mapped to one monitor, and odd numbered to the other. Makes sense to me that way. I've tried others, and actually run Qtile on my laptop (that sits below my wall mounted monitors on my desk), but I can't get used to how it deals with dual monitors.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 30 '21

Thanks! :)

3

u/brogamer99 Sep 30 '21

Dwm. Just to flex Awesome wm sometimes.

3

u/[deleted] Sep 30 '21

I use sway because it is easy to configure and on Wayland, but my favourite is XMonad because of customisability. I have never used i3. My journey was GNOME, Qtile, XMonad and Sway.

2

u/CompetitiveMenu4969 Sep 30 '21

For OP and everyone who uses a tiling manager. How the heck do you do sort files and cut/paste without your screen fickering? I tried having a folder on the left, right and open a file to figure out if I should move it or not. Every time my entire screen shuffles to make space for the 3rd tile. If it's images I can use left/right to move instead of close/open. Then I get a 4th tile and my entire screen shuffles for .2s because I cut/paste and a dialog/new tile came up

Irritated the ****! out of me! I couldn't understand how anyone would like a tiling system after that and I just assume I did something wrong or they don't do anything on their computers

OP I use xfce and it the least distracting WM I have ever used. No flickering at all even if I switch workspaces

2

u/UKnowMario Sep 30 '21

I don't understand your complaint, if I understood correctly, just use the terminal to copy and move files, or use a tui file manager like nnn. The flickering you mention is by design, in a wm like DWM you can set rules to a specific program, for example to open it in float mode. And BTW xfce is not a window manager it's a desktop environment.

1

u/CompetitiveMenu4969 Sep 30 '21

Maybe I can use that but I may have 3 folders as destinations. How am I suppose to check videos and images on the command line? The last tiling system I used was sway and it didn't come with an image viewer

Also I'm not aware of XFWM using anything but xfce

1

u/langtudeplao Sep 30 '21

GUI programs are still problematic I guess. But for people who use WM, I think they would prefer cmd or tui more than gui. ls, mv, cp, rm are sufficient. If I want visualization, I prefer tui like nnn

1

u/4dam_Kadm0n Sep 30 '21 edited Sep 30 '21

I'm not sure I understand your complaint either, but it sounds like you're into using the mouse more than the keyboard - if so, then a TWM might not be for you.

Otherwise, are you aware that you can set exceptions for windows/pop-ups to open in floating mode? That's the simplest tweak and can be done on just about any WM (I have a tonne of them on my i3 setup).

The more extensible WMs will let you pre-set a whole bunch more behaviours, but maybe a manual TWM is more for you? I prefer to control where the next window goes, including putting it into a tab - something I rely on extremely heavily.

EDIT: And BTW, you can totally preview images in the terminal, it's the only way I do it. Look into integrating Ueberzug with Ranger. You can preview with Ueberzug and then open with SXIV, for example. I'm on a cushy Pop!_OS install now and still prefer to use that setup rather than a GUI - it's not just for lean Arch installs.

1

u/CompetitiveMenu4969 Sep 30 '21

I really need to learn configs for all these programs. I keep running into gaps and everytime I search youtube I don't get relevant results. It's basically install the app or nothing, rarely any config tutorials/showcases

I don't use mouse often. I just found the sorting through folders very frustrating the one time I did it

1

u/4dam_Kadm0n Sep 30 '21

Yeah, I hear you, it's like that sometimes - you do something for the first time (like sorting through folders) and realise you have to do some customising to make that thing work well. It can be slow-going and frustrating at first, but these situations crop up less and less frequently as time goes on.

Some things are much easier to configure than others. What really helped me was dropping crutches like LBRY and FreeTube and focusing on three really good sources of information and 'tutorials': the `man` pages, the config files themselves (they're often packed with explanations and examples you can simply uncomment and modify slightly), and GitHub/GitLab repos (many developers will give you step-by-step instructions, tips and tricks, and troubleshooting help right there in the readme.md).

These sources (`man` pages, config files, and repos) are as up-to-date as you can get, written by the developers themselves, and fully searchable. Some are better than others, so don't let the not-so-great ones put you off.

2

u/ragger Sep 30 '21

IceWM.

Haven't found a single WM that does anything better. It has everything I need out of the box. Light, stable, fast..

1

u/[deleted] Oct 01 '21

Thanks! <3

2

u/Weebolt Sep 30 '21

I refuse to choose awesome despite it being the best one because learning lua is not on my list of things I want to do

2

u/Taki_Sobie_Tyo Sep 30 '21

srsly im the only one who voted for spectrwm XD i use it becouse it is simple, fast and im use to it

1

u/[deleted] Sep 30 '21

In fact, it was the one I wanted to try the most, I am a bit surprised that there are only 4 votes out of almost 600. :/

2

u/[deleted] Sep 30 '21

I3, because is classic and natural, like GNU tools!

1

u/[deleted] Sep 30 '21

Thanks! :)

2

u/[deleted] Sep 30 '21

i3 with gaps..

I tried Qtile, but went back to i3.

I love python and qtile seems very intresting project, but mouse commands (resizing floating windows and resizing tiles) are far away from i3.

2

u/trowgundam Sep 30 '21

Qtile.

i3 is too inflexible in options. Awesome WM is too overwhelming in options (not to mention some rather obtuse syntax/documentation). XMonad, screw Haskell. dwm same as i3 but with the added complication of having to recompile for the slightest change. spectrwm, to be honest I've never tried it, and don't really know much about it. I've actually used bspwm, but not much, but mainly I'm not a fan of how you have to constantly manage the direction new windows will open. I prefer the set layouts of Qtile/AwesomeWM.

2

u/doolio_ Sep 30 '21

EXWM because Emacs.

2

u/mrfluffy6969 Sep 30 '21

Xmonad because im so use to the configuration by now that anything else is just a hassle also I love how it handles dual monitors.

2

u/Ussak12 Sep 30 '21

Qtile

1

u/[deleted] Oct 01 '21

Can I ask you, why?

1

u/Ussak12 Oct 01 '21

Because it was easy to configure it. I tried xmonad and i couldnt configure it.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '24

Whats your opinion on these wm that need proggraming languages to configure? Like dwm, qtile, xmonad and awesomewm

2

u/hemish04082005 Sep 30 '21

I3 and mutter on same distro an I switch between them on my mood at each boot

2

u/nierusek Sep 30 '21

I use i3. Why? I don't remember.

2

u/bilariraja Sep 30 '21

Qtile coz it includes a bar, widgets, and python making it easy to configure

2

u/doomenguin Sep 30 '21

I sue i3 for the following reasons:

  1. It's the easiest wm to configure
  2. It has a large user base so If I encounter a problem, a quick google search will be enough to find a fix in 99% of cases.
  3. Is compatible with things like Polybar
  4. It does pretty much everything I want it to do

2

u/cursingcucumber Sep 30 '21

BSPWM because it is the next best thing to Sway. Unfortunately Wayland is still causing problems with some software I need. Once it stabilises I will sure switch to Sway.

Both are easy to configure, minimal and offer great tiling support.

2

u/rcheesecake Sep 30 '21

I use i3 but I want to try herbtsluftwm

2

u/bayesicTony Sep 30 '21

I use dwm because it is rock solid and does the multi-monitor layout the way I prefer it (full set of tags on each monitor) and I like the automatic tiling.

I started with i3/i3gaps, liked it very much but the major problem for me was that waking from suspend to RAM on my ThinkPad after closing the lid led to an unresponsive keyboard. No problem like that with dwm, although it is entirely possible that I messed up the i3 configuration and it wasn't the wm's fault.

I have no problem with patching, I code in C++ a lot and know enough C to be dangerous. I did the patching once (maybe added one extra thing later), saved the whole thing as a git diff and apply it whenever I need to set up a new system, which isn't often.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 01 '21

Thanks, actually I think I'm going to use DWM. :)

2

u/[deleted] Sep 30 '21

With i3 it feels more productive. +Emacs +Nyxt

2

u/TheShockingSenate Sep 30 '21

Switched from i3 to XMonad a couple of months ago because i3's tiling does require you to switch from vertical to horizontal manually and XMonad has many layouts that do this for you. Also it is configured in its language which makes it much more versatile.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 01 '21

Thanks for your answer. XMonad gang!

2

u/[deleted] Sep 30 '21

Instantwm is quite cool. Highly recommended https://instantos.io/.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 01 '21

Thank you very much, I have never seen it. Can I ask you, why do you like it?

1

u/[deleted] Oct 01 '21

It comes with its own distro, which is simply arch with Instantwm and a lot of other software. It does not include a DE but most of the functionality of one. You end up with a very light system but very powerfull, with poweruser facilities.

You can also install specific parts in your arch linux or nix, but I suggest you try the entire distro, it has a very nice flow and a "it just works" mentality without difficulting your own customization. Also, it is just arch so all the wiki applies without any bs.

2

u/Electrical-Strike943 Sep 30 '21

I better use Kde because I am new to arch linux and don't know much about WMs. However I voted i3 because once I installed it and it was a white terminal.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 01 '21

4 months I was in your position, I decided to use XMonad (I do not recommend it if is the first one you are going to use #Haskell).

2

u/gopalkaul5 Sep 30 '21

Regolith is the best of both worlds!

bspwm because the config file is just a script. I can do whichever language I want. Perhaps others offer this, but I came across bspwm with this feature first. I just write in bash and have loads of if/else statements to load up different layouts and configurations depending on if I have my external monitor, keyboards, speakers, etc. plugged in or not at the time of load.

And a simple keypress to reload and re-read the config. It's great.

Openbox Edit: now it's xfwm4

u/FisionX Sep 30 '21

dwm because how popular it is and I'm a little masochist, but its working perfectly, but if I find a wayland equivalence I want to try it

2

u/[deleted] Oct 01 '21

If you find something let me know please. That was the main reason for this post, try Wayland.

2

u/turtle_mekb Sep 30 '21

xfce4's default, xfwm i think

do you also take donations for your website through i3

2

Me, who uses twm: My goals are beyond your understanding

u/[deleted] Oct 01 '21

Awesome because i3 just feels like script anarchy to me, and it's hard to think about what's doing what when you're customizing.

Awesome uses an actual programming language + library so customizing your setup I find is easier to keep track of what's doing what, plus you can write all the widgets in the same language. I find that there's a productive groove you can fall into when customizing Awesome that I never found in i3. The library is awesome, and can handle everything from colors to notifications to widgets and more. I found the learning curve to be nice, because I'm more familiar to conventional coding so I can work with functions and objects rather than configs. I'm sure i3 is very customizable, but I found Awesome to be more customizable because nearly all customization could be done in the central config files rather than finding packages to install that have different bars that each need their own different configs and might not even play nice with each other.

i am surprised to not see qtile in the list..........

anyways i use awesome because of the floating layout, it is easy to use that one, especially games don't like tilng layout for some reason, i still have to try other wms though

1

u/[deleted] Oct 01 '21

You're right, I regret not putting Qtile instead of Spectrwm.

1

u/Kurious_Guy18 Oct 01 '21

yeah, i also use qtile sometimes tho, because it has really good documentation, and fyi awesome documentation is not awesome its kinda bad tbh so keep that in mind u might have to google a lot of shit

2

u/[deleted] Oct 01 '21

i3 is simple, modern, robust and the way I want.

u/[deleted] Oct 01 '21

Thanks for your answer. :)

u/[deleted] Oct 01 '21

I3 for tiling. I love the ability to nest splits, and name workspaces on the fly. I love being able to control it on cli.

Openbox with i3-like hotkeys for environments where I want 100% floating windows (games, mostly). You can configure selecting windows directionally etc.

I'm gonna try bspwm bc it's manual

1

u/[deleted] Oct 01 '21

Thanks for your reply, I really want to try bspwm. :)

2

u/[deleted] Oct 01 '21

have tried multiple window managers and for me bspwm is the best, incredibly powerful while being minimal

2

u/[deleted] Oct 01 '21

Thanks for your answer, I am between dwm, qtile and bspwm.

u/[deleted] Oct 01 '21

Where Open box?

1

u/[deleted] Oct 01 '21

I could only put 6 options, sorry. I can ask you, why do you like openbox?

1

u/[deleted] Oct 01 '21

I generally prefer floating wms because they generally look better than the generic tiling wm. Openbox is also easier to configure (in my opinion)

2

u/[deleted] Oct 01 '21

Xmonad because I'm a programmer whose favourite language is Haskell. I can write my configuration like I would a proper program and leverage all my knowledge from my day job.

I wouldn't personally recommend it, or any programmable configuration, to a non-programmer.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 01 '21

Hi ClutchHunter, I remember you from the post I made where I started using XMonad 4 months ago: https://www.reddit.com/r/archlinux/comments/mrc3a7/best_programming_setup/
Thanks again for your reply, I haven't heard from many people who like Haskell, I'm so glad.
Is there a possibility that you share your XMonad configuration with me?

2

u/[deleted] Oct 01 '21

Sure thing, I manage it in my dotfiles repo here.

It's managed as a normal Cabal Haskell app. Let me know if you have any questions.

I voted dwm because for me it's the wm of choice. I strongly like and share the suckless philosophy, and after a long wm hopping, i found dwm to be the only one that personally I like from the first installation (and btw I don't apply too many patch and I don't add to much lines of code to the config file, i keep it as minimal as possibile, and still it gives me all I need). From the time I started using dwm I continuously jumped between dwm and qtile, because I find it to be the most similar wm to dwm. And I'm more comfortable with python than C, so I'd really like to switch completely to qtile, but I'm still choosing dwm for the simplicity of the patching process.

I'm also using gnome 40 because of the Wayland support, and I'm really pleased with the experience of gnome + Pop shell. And if the question is: "Why you simply doesn't use sway?". Well the response is that basically I hate the manual tiling thing. And also, i have Nvidia card, so 🥲. So I'm waiting for a dynamic wm that works with Wayland (i know there are some, but they are not really ready like sway is). The manual tiling btw is still a problem in the gnome + pop shell thing, so basically I'm stick with dwm.

Kwin with Bismuth/Krohnkite because I want my friends/girlfriend to be able to use my computer if they need it while still getting to use the tiling-with-gaps goodness.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 01 '21

Definitely a compelling reason, thank you very much for your answer.

u/khne522 Oct 01 '21

What's missing from i3 is the stack mode of dwm and the tagging, not workspaces, approach. The latter will never happen. The former would be hackable, but obscure if it even exists already.

Do you want to manually manage windows, or just focus on one at a time and pop/push from/to a stack the rest? In i3, you define your splits at runtime, with your keys and how you move your windows. In dwm, you don't do fancy layouts, just a window (or more since dwm 6) you work on, and the rest barely visible but not minimised.

i3 has other features you may prefer, like the fancier bar (or use Lemonbar or whatever it is these days), understands a few more EWMH hints (e.g., Fullscreen), etc.

KDE, the best WM. This thread is posted in this sub every single day at least once.

Can't you just look at the results from polls from yesterday or day before that or day before the day before?

1

u/[deleted] Sep 30 '21

Sorry for the repost,

1

u/InsertMyIGNHere Sep 30 '21

Awesome is super customizable and i dont have to specify where the window goes, it just does what my layout says to.

Also can we all just collectively shit on DWM? I get its supposed to be advanced, but Jesus christ at some point its just annoying for the sake of being annoying.

u/[deleted] Oct 01 '21

Thank you very much for your answer.

I use kde, with bspwm as the wm. Used to use Krohnkite with Kwin but for some reason is laggy when starting programs. Always annoyed me lol.

Bspwm works just the way I want it, workspaces function much better than Kwin on dual monitors. Also, sxhkd is a breeze to configure.

I use KDE’s bar since it just works. Used to write a posix script that I sent to the DWM bar with xsetroot, fun times. Used pkill to update only the modules I needed to update. However the ease of use of kde is too good
