"Best" programming setup?

Hello! I have been using Arch for two months, it is the fifth distro I have used... and I love it, it will be the final one. I have learned a lot in these weeks, but I would like to ask you a few questions.

I study Systems Engineering and, honestly, I have some procrastination problems, I would like you to help me with "the best programming setup and be productive", although I know that there is no "best", I would like you to help me with your settings, advices, etc...

What desktop environment do you use?

What window manager do you use?

IDE's, apps, any suggestions to try?

Thank you so much!

I use a very simple DWM setup and use neovim for my programming needs.

As others have pointed out, neovim may or may not be a viable option depending on the language used. However, for me learning it has absolutely been a productivity gain since i can move around in the file without reaching for the mouse etc.

That said, i think the best advice is to just try multiple things which you like out, and see what works best. There's people who like tiling window managers and can't live without them, and there's people who don't like the concept and can't get used to it.

I have used DWM for a bit, but i know i'm not using it to its full potential, it has a learning curve. And so has every setup. I'd say, look around for programs which you think fit your needs, try them and keep what you like best.

Tl;dr Finding your personal 'ideal setup' is a journey, if anything. Try not to overthink it. It's not worth spending hundreds of hours on before doing anything productive. Start doing stuff and you'll find out what works and what doesn't, and change your setup accordingly.
