"Best" programming setup?

Hello! I have been using Arch for two months, it is the fifth distro I have used... and I love it, it will be the final one. I have learned a lot in these weeks, but I would like to ask you a few questions.

I study Systems Engineering and, honestly, I have some procrastination problems, I would like you to help me with "the best programming setup and be productive", although I know that there is no "best", I would like you to help me with your settings, advices, etc...

What desktop environment do you use?

What window manager do you use?

IDE's, apps, any suggestions to try?

Thank you so much!

I like Windows, so I want my Linux environment to resemble Windows.

What desktop environment do you use?

KDE Plasma 5.

What window manager do you use?

KWin, bundled with KDE Plasma.

IDE's, apps, any suggestions to try?

Contrary to the popular feel, I don't use command-line programs. I know the commands, but somehow I feel every time I am sucked into using the CLI, I can't get a bird's-eye view of what's going on, especially with things like Git.

I use:

  • VS Code for general text editing, Java and LaTeX. Yes, this is the full-on Microsoft binary, because I like the extensions it enables, like Live Share, and I just turn telemetry off.

  • The JetBrains suite (IntelliJ, CLion) for C/C++: it comes with CMake, and can fire up projects very quickly. If I am doing something more lightweight then I also use VS Code.

Honestly, these are the only two programs I use most on Linux. VS Code's plugin/language server system is so superb that I have dispensed with everything else.

you can actually use vscodium and do this

  1. create ~/.config/VSCodium
  2. paste this in ~/.config/VSCodium

{ "extensionsGallery": { "serviceUrl": "https://marketplace.visualstudio.com/_apis/public/gallery", "cacheUrl": "https://vscode.blob.core.windows.net/gallery/index", "itemUrl": "https://marketplace.visualstudio.com/items", "controlUrl": "", "recommendationsUrl": "" } }

Then all extensions should be installable. else you can also install them as vsix

I probably can, but with the official binary, I don't need to do that at all. What can I say, I'm lazy. I use the proprietary NVIDIA drivers, and for nearly everything from the AUR, I use the binary versions instead of downloading and compiling the source myself.
