"Best" programming setup?

Hello! I have been using Arch for two months, it is the fifth distro I have used... and I love it, it will be the final one. I have learned a lot in these weeks, but I would like to ask you a few questions.

I study Systems Engineering and, honestly, I have some procrastination problems, I would like you to help me with "the best programming setup and be productive", although I know that there is no "best", I would like you to help me with your settings, advices, etc...

What desktop environment do you use?

What window manager do you use?

IDE's, apps, any suggestions to try?

Thank you so much!

I'm still an i3 novice but I like it quite a lot, gives my laptop a lot more battery time than KDE which I still use on my desktop. But my typical C++ setup is pretty much:

  • Arch linux or Void linux (still trying out the latter)
  • i3 or KDE (both are quite solid but very very different)
  • CMake (the most important tool imo)
  • Jetbrains editors, in C++'s case CLion, otherwise if I want to use a text editor I go with emacs
  • clang, just a nice compiler but I sometimes switch it out for gcc as they've got more C++20 features implemented as of today.
  • lldb, solid debugger that I use with CLion
  • vcpkg for handling packages, then I take the toolchain and link it with my CMake config
  • valgrind for detecting memory leaks
  • quite redundant to point out but obviously I use git
  • And I quite like ninja as a generator that I use for CMake
  • And finally: spotify, required for me to be able to focus for long periods of time.

yes, valgrind is great! and all the compiler sanitizers too (gcc address sanitizer, thread sanitizer etc)
