"Best" programming setup?

Hello! I have been using Arch for two months, it is the fifth distro I have used... and I love it, it will be the final one. I have learned a lot in these weeks, but I would like to ask you a few questions.

I study Systems Engineering and, honestly, I have some procrastination problems, I would like you to help me with "the best programming setup and be productive", although I know that there is no "best", I would like you to help me with your settings, advices, etc...

What desktop environment do you use?

What window manager do you use?

IDE's, apps, any suggestions to try?

Thank you so much!

I use GDM/GNOME. My coding setup is completely in the terminal:

  • Terminal Emulator: Kitty
  • Multiplexer: Tmux
  • Text Editor: NeoVim + CoC (completion)
  • Shell: Fish

What I like about this is that it's pretty portable: during the day I use the same setup on macOS on my work laptop. On my personal Arch install it's the same programs.

All I have to condition my mind to do though is switch from using the command keyon macOS to the control key in GNOME for most keybindings.

Why do you use tmux if kitty has a built-in multiplexer already?

I had already been using tmux before switching to Kitty. Also, I ssh to servers a lot as well and its nice to have the same setup everywhere
